ABSTRACT
ThispaperintroducestheSwivelDiaphragm:aninnovativetypeofretractableringstructureconstituted
straightandangulatedelements.Comparedtoothersimilarmechanismsforexample,RetractablePlates
Deployable Reciprocal Frames, the Swivel Diaphragm can offer the additional advantages of pure
rotationalmotionaroundfixedexternalsupports,simplicityofcomponentsandthepossibilityofdifferent
designsthatemploythesamenumberandtypeofelements.Inaddition,thispaperevaluatesthepotentialof
deployablegridsusingmodulesoftheSwivelDiaphragm.
Over the last three decades dynamic structures have gained increasing popularity because of their
capabilityformovementthatinspiresdesignersandcreatesastructuralchallengeforengineers.Thereare
many types of mechanisms that fall into this category. Therefore, regarding practical issues, these
structureswillbeclassifiedhereintotwomaingroups:portablestructuresandtransformablestructures.
Portablestructuresareidealfortemporaryarchitecture;theyareeasytoerect,dismantle,transportand
store.Ofthedynamicstructures,portablestructuresarearguablythemostexploredandstudied.Particular
attentionhasbeenpaidtodeployable/unfoldingsystems,oneofthesubcategoriescharacterizedbyusing
scissors-like-elementsasaprincipalmodule.ResearcherssuchasPerezPiero[1],PerezValcarcel[1],
Escrig[1,2], Ziegler[3], Hernandez and Zalewski [4], and Gantes[5] have developed several projects
employingthesesimplemechanisms.Incontrast,transformablestructuresareidealfor'smart'buildings,
whichareinpermanentmovement,whileremainingwithinafixedboundary.Theyareabletorespondto
external or internal changing conditions through the metamorphosis of their components. Projects
employingthesecharacteristicshavemadeuseofdifferenttechnologytoachievemotion.Calatrava[6]for
example,hasdesignedexceptionaldynamicframesusinghydraulicmechanisms.TheKineticDesign
Group[7]haveproposedinnovativeideasfortransformablebuildingscontrolledbycomputersystems.
WhileHoberman[8],theDeployableStructuresLaboratory(DSL),TheUniversityofCambridge,[9-11]
Chilton[12] havedevelopedcreativemechanicalsystemsforretractablestructuresemployingbars,plates
andhinges.Particularfeaturesofthiskindofretractablesystemwillbeanalysedinthispaperandanew
systemcalledSwivelDiaphragmwillbepresented.

AlthoughRetractablePlatesandDeployableReciprocalPlatesachieveasimilaroutcomeforretractable

comparisonwillhelpthereadertounderstand thepotentialattributesoftheSwivelDiaphragm.
