Physic side of a Tornado

Buoyancy
Archimedes:
Archimedes discovered the law of Buoyancy in the palace of Hieroon of Syracuse. He wanted
to discover if the king’s crown was made of pure gold. He was tired and took a bath. When he
put his leg into the water, the water spilled over the edge of the bath and Archimedes shout
‘Eureka!’ Now he could tell the king if his crown was made of pure gold and if the goldsmith
was lying to the king. He placed the
king’s crown in the water and saw the
crown was over flooding the water.
That means that the crown was heavy
and that the water was rising because
of the weight of the crown. In the
picture here on the right, you see an
example:
Archimedes discovered that the crown
wasn’t made of gold, because the
weight of gold and that of silver are
different. Silver is heavier than gold.
Archimedes reported to the king and
the king had the goldsmith executed,
because he was lying.
Archimedes was the first person who discovered this principle. He says: ‘Any object, wholly
partly immersed in a fluid, is buoyed up by a force equal to the weight of the fluid displaced
by the object.
Archimedes principle was based on the mass of an object that made the fluid rise. It sounds
very difficult, but we are going to dive into this principle.

In context to rear flank downdraft:
In this chapter of my survey I am going to talk about the rear flank downdraft. And maybe
you will now think, what does buoyancy make any different to tornadoes? Now it doesn’t
mean anything to a tornado. But Buoyancy is in contact with the rear flank downdraft, and
that is a very important thing to a tornado.

If a rear flank downdraft will arise, it needs negative buoyancy. If it has not, the rear flank
downdraft cannot exist. (for the explanation of the rear flank downdraft I refer to that chapter)
The rear flank downdraft is important for the beginning of a tornado. It is a sort of warning
for the people that the tornado is coming. If the rear flank downdraft gets a positive buoyancy
the tornado arises. The stronger the storm, or the bigger the rear flank, the stronger the
tornado.

This explanation is difficult, so I


will make it clear with a picture:
What happens here is that the
cold air drops down, and that the
warm area is pushed back by the
cold air, and that the warm air is
now circling back up. In theory
cold air is heavier than warm air.
If this is the buoyancy made by a
rear flank downdraft, that
represents itself in a tornado.

After the tornado disappears it


can come back again, but only
when there is a positive
buoyancy!

Buoyancy is an important thing


for a tornado. If there is no
Buoyancy there is no tornado.
