BRAKE FLUID
The boiling point of brake fluid is its most important parameter. The parameters for evaluation are set with precision by various regulatory bodies or manufacturers (SAE, CUNA, DOT). The water very slowly infiltrates into the braking system through the micropores of the pipes, the seals and fittings. With increasing percentage of absorption there is a reduction of the boiling temperature, with greater potential for formation of gas bubbles in the circuit (vapor lock). While liquids are not compressible (and thus are capable of transmitting a force), gas, on the contrary, they are. If there are bubbles of gas, the brake lever determines their compression instead of transmitting a force that presses against the disc.

Brake fluids have a presence (2-3%) of substances that inhibit corrosion.

For safety reason, the durability of the braking system has to be guarateed with the utmost care. The additives have to preserve against corrosion tubes, tires, cylinders and pistons, in order to avoid seizure and wear. The anti-corrosion capacity decays with time. For this reason the brake fluid should be replaced every two years.

Protective fluids: requirements, characteristics and properties

Fundamentally protective fluids have the purpose of absorbing heat from areas at high temperature and moving it to the radiator, where its released in the air. The most suitable fluid for this function is water because not only it has a high specific heat and optimum thermal conductivity but also because it easily flows inside the smallest cavities. Anyway inside the engine it has considerable limitations: - it becomes ice at 0C (the volume increases by 10%); - it becomes steam at 100C; - it generates lime scale deposits and rust; - it promotes cavitation.

Protective fluids: requirements, characteristics and properties

A percentage of radiator protective fluid is added to water. It decreases the water freezing point and increases its boiling point. This helps to protect the engine from: - deposits; - corrosion; - cavitations; - rust.

Protective fluids: requirements, characteristics and properties

Cavitation (mechanical corrosion) on light alloy cylinder heads of 4 stroke petrol engines and on the external surface of wet liners (heavy diesel engines) tends to occur due to the formation of small air bubbles inside the liquid mass. The formation of air bubbles can be caused by: - temperature; - fluid flow; - vibration of surrounding metal components which can generate a hydraulic current within the fluid itself

Protective fluids: requirements, characteristics and properties

To use a low quality protective fluid can be dangerous as this could lack inhibitor additives which, once added to ethylene glycol, form a complete cooling system protective fluid. These specific additives (nitrite, phosphate and borate based, including other substances), inhibit any type of chemical or mechanical corrosion within the system. Alloy materials and increasingly smaller radiators make the use of complete cooling fluids in modern engines absolutely essential.
