Introduction
PathFinder Drilling Motors (PDM) was established in April of 1991 with the purpose of supplying the oil & gas industry a series of high
quality and dependable downhole drilling motors on a sales, lease, or rental basis.
PDM motors have been a major player in all
areas of the world. This manual is provided
for informational purposes only. PDM has
taken the necessary precautions to ensure its
accuracy, but PDM does not expressly or implicitly guarantee the information contained
herein. The information contained herein is
the sole interpretation of the user. Should the
user have any questions pertaining to its accuracy, please contact a PDM representative.
Motor Description
This section of the handbook is designed
to provide the drillers and the operators with
a general description of our downhole drilling motors. Although different size motors
have different performance characteristics,
they share the same basic components:

Top Sub
Catch Mandrel
Power Section
Power Transmission Coupling
Fixed or Adjustable Bent Housing
Bearing Pack Assembly
Bit Box

Near-Bit Stabilizers

Top Sub & Catch Mandrel

The top sub has a dual function. It is used
as a cross over between the motor assembly
and the drill string. It also functions as part of
the catch system by providing the seat for the
catch mandrel.
The Rotor Catch Mandrel is incorporated in the
design of PDM motors as a retaining device. Its
function is to minimize the possibility of losing
motor components in the hole, in the unlikely
event that an external connection breaks or
backs-off. It is also designed to communicate
a possible connection failure to the surface via
a series of pressure signals. To recognize these
signals, it is important to understand how the
Rotor Catch Mandrel behaves under normal
and distressed conditions.

Figure 1
Figure 1 illustrates the major components of
our drilling motors.

The Catch Mandrel is attached to the top of

the rotor by a threaded connection. The ow
channels around the mandrel are sized to
minimize the pressure losses across the catch
mechanism. The upset section of the catch is
positioned inside a cavity within the Top Sub.
This cavity provides the seat for the catch if or
when an external motor connection fails. Under
normal operating conditions, the catch simply
rotates with the rotor without any substantial
load being applied to it. Figure (2) illustrates
the catch under normal operating conditions.

Figure (3) shows the catch position after a

connection failure. There are two basic modes
of connection failure: connection breakage
and connection back-off. The catch behaves
differently under each condition. If an external motor connection is severed, with motor
on-bottom, a sudden loss of pressure occurs.
Picking the motor off-bottom will seat the catch
resulting in off-bottom pressure increase. The
increase in pressure can range from a few
hundred psi to several hundred psi, depending on the ow rate and mud properties. As
soon as the motor is set on bottom, the catch
will unseat itself and relief the pressure. This
pressure uctuation is indicative of a possible
connection failure.
If the mode of failure is connection backoff,
two scenarios are possible. If the connection
separates completely, the pressure signal will
be as described before. If the catch seats itself before the joint is totally separated, then
setting the motor on-bottom will not unseat

Figure 2

Figure 3

the catch. The rotation of the drill string might

screw the connection back together and relieve the excessive pressure.

Power Section
The power section uses what is known in the industry as Positive Displacement power section. Its
function is to convert a portion of the hydraulic
energy of the drilling uid into mechanical horsepower. The components comprising the power
section are the rotor and the stator.
The rotor is a long and spiral shaft, designed to t
inside a corresponding stator. It is manufactured
from a solid bar of stainless steel and plated with
hard industrial chrome or tungsten carbide. The
chrome or tungsten carbide is intended to protect
the parent metal against corrosion and wear while
reducing the friction between the rotor and the
stator. In high-ow applications, PDM rotors can
be jetted to divert the additional ow to the bit.
The stator is the non-rotating member of the
power section. It is made out of a seamless, heattreated tube, lined with an elastomer (rubber) lining. The internal cavity of the liner has a spiral
geometry designed to accept a rotor of compatible geometry and size. In a Positive Displacement
power section, the rotor always has one less lobe
than the stator.
Power sections are categorized by their size,
rotor/stator lobe ratios, and the number of stages
(stage in a power section is dened as the distance, measured parallel to the rotor axis, between two corresponding points of the same spiral
lobe, i.e. lead length of the spiral).

Figure 4
Figure (4) shows the cross-sectional view of the
rotor and the stator prole with different lobe ratios. There are a few rules of thumb, which might
be benecial in the selection and operation of any
PDM motor:
1-The rotational speed of the rotor is proportional
to the rate of uid ow through the power section.
2-The generated torque is proportional to the differential pressure across the power section.
3-The torque generated is independent of the uid
ow through the power section.
4-Power sections with a higher lobe ratio typically
generate more torque and have slower rotary
speed than the ones with a lower lobe ratio. For
example, a 9 5/8 motor with 3:4 lobe ratio will
rotate the drill bit at a higher RPM and will have
less output torque per stage than a 9 5/8 motor
with 4:5 lobe ratio.
5-An increase in the number of stages will proportionally increase the output power and torque at
the same ow rate.

10

Optimum completion of a drilling project relies

heavily on the proper selection of the stator elastomer compound. The main factors to consider
are the maximum downhole temperature, mud
type, mud additives, and any harmful chemicals which might be encountered during drilling.
Given enough forewarning, testing of the drilling uid under simulated downhole conditions
can be conducted before the drilling tools are
assembled. Test results are helpful to determine
the optimum elastomer for the application.
As mentioned in earlier sections, PDM offers
several different stator elastomer compounds.
These different compounds react differently
when exposed to elevated temperatures and
the various chemicals present in drilling uids.
The standard elastomer is a nitrile based rubber
NBR suitable for use with water based and low
temperature oil based drilling uids. This rubber
is suitable for use in wells with temperatures in
excess of 270F with the proper sizing and uid
compatibility. The standard nitrile stators are
the most common and cost effective option for
most drilling conditions. An additional nitrile
elastomer is available in certain models which is
more rigid and resilient. This NBR-HR elastomer can deliver a minimum of 50% more power
than the standard NBR with the proper drilling
parameters.

11

In drilling applications where the drilling uid is

less typical and the temperature is elevated, the
highly saturated nitrile elastomer HSN may be
the optimum choice. The highly saturated type
elastomer is formulated for greater chemical resistance, especially at higher temperature. HSN
elastomer is the best suited elastomer for oil
based and most synthetic based drilling uids.
Some motor sizes have the option of a metal reinforced or uniform elastomer thickness stator
equipped power section. The uniform or even
elastomer stator compared to a conventional
stator can be seen below in Figure (5).

Figure 5
The metal reinforcement of the elastomer prole provides a structural reinforcement of the
elastomer prole allowing its seal against the
rotor to operate at signicantly higher pressure differential than conventional stators. This
higher pressure differential produces a higher
operating and stall torque. The higher pressure
seal between the rotor and the stator assures
a more steady speed operation than a conventional power section.

12

The metal reinforcement also provides a

superior path for heat dissipation from the
rotor and stator interface. This superior heat
dissipation allows the metal reinforced stator
to operate more reliably at elevated temperatures than a conventional power section. The
smaller elastomer content of the metal
reinforced stator also provides for a stator
more resistant to aggressive oil and synthetic
based drilling uids.
Power Transmission Coupling
The power transmission coupling is the link
between the rotor and the Bearing Mandrel. It
converts the eccentric motion of the rotor into
the concentric rotary motion of the Bearing
Mandrel or Driveshaft. It also transmits
the torque and the rotary motion of the
rotor, generated by the power section, to the
bearing assembly. The hydraulic down thrust
of the rotor is also transferred to the bearing
section through this member. All PDM Power
Transmission Couplings are manufactured
from a high grade of heat treated alloy steel.
The working surfaces of the power transmission are sealed with a high temperature and
pressure lubricant to assure optimum operation and reliability.
Bent Housing
The xed or adjustable bent housings contain the Power Transmission Coupling and
connects the stator housing to the bearing

13

housing. Bent housings are available with

xed and adjustable bends. Fixed bent housings can only be congured at PDM facilities
in angles ranging from 0 to 5 degrees depending on the motor model. The adjustable housings can be set to various bend angles at the
rig site (see the appendix section of this handbook for adjustment procedure). The magnitude of the Adjustable Bent Housing bend
angle ranges from 0 to 3 degrees. This bend
of the Fixed or Adjustable Bent Housing gives
the motor its steering capability. The Fixed
and Adjustable Bent Housings are manufactured out of premium grade high strength
alloy steel. Their contact surfaces with the
formation are hard-faced to minimize wear
while drilling.
Bearing Pack Assembly
The bearing pack assembly contains the necessary components to transmit the rotary drilling
motion to the drill bit and transmit the drilling
forces from the Bottom Hole Assembly (BHA)
to the drill bit. The main components of the
Bearing Pack Assembly are the Bearing Mandrel
or Driveshaft, Thrust and Radial Bearings. The
Bearing Mandrel or Driveshaft is a bored, long
shaft designed to transmit the power (torque
and rpm) to the drill bit. It also channels the
drilling uid to the bit. It is manufactured out
of a high grade of alloy steel that is forged and
heat-treated for strength and toughness. The
Thrust Bearings are designed to sustain

14

the applied weight to the drill bit while onbottom. They are also capable of bearing the
downward hydraulic thrust load of the rotor The
Thrust Bearings are designed to sustain the applied weight to the drill bit while on-bottom.
They are also capable of bearing the downward
hydraulic thrust load of the rotor while circulating off-bottom or drilling with under balanced
bit weight. Depending on the motor model the
thrust bearings may consist of a unique tool
steel ball bearing design that is precision made
and enables the same set of bearings to carry
the on-bottom as well as the off-bottom load.
This important feature increases the number of
bearing races within the limited available space
and increases the thrust load capacity and the
life of the bearing pack. An alternative Thrust
Bearing design utilized in some models consists
of high grade Polycrystalline Diamond Compact
(PDC) Inserts similar to those used on PDC Drill
Bits. These PDC inserts provide a high capacity
and extremely wear resistant thrust bearing for
applications where shorter tool length or extra
longevity is required.
The Radial Bearings rigidly support the bearing
mandrel inside the bearing housing and transfer
the radial forces generated during drilling to the
housings and the rest of the BHA, while assuring that the Driveshaft is aligned and concentric with the axis of the bearing housing.

The Radial Bearings are constructed from specialized Tungsten Carbide components to provide optimum life and reliability.
The design of the Tungsten Carbide radial bearings also precisely meter the amount of drilling
uid that ows through the radial and thrust
bearings for cooling of the bearings. This assures the optimum drilling uid ow through the
driveshaft and out to the drill bit.
The Bearing Pack Assembly of the PathFinder
Motor is one of the few designs that also incorporates a Driveshaft safety catch feature to minimize the possibility of leaving the drill bit in the
hole in the unlikely event the Driveshaft breaks
or backs-off. Figure 6 illustrates the normal running position of the Driveshaft and the Driveshaft
Catch on the left and the engaged position of the
Catch on the right. If the Driveshaft breaks or
backs-off a precision low stress upset or ridge
on the lower portion of the Driveshaft engages

a split ring contained within the lower portion of

the bearing housing preventing the Driveshaft
from exiting the bearing pack. A substantial
decrease in the off bottom pressure drop on
the surface will signal an incident has occurred
so that appropriate action can be taken.
Bit Box
The bit box is an integral part of the bearing
mandrel. Its outside diameter is sized to accept a specied box connection. While all the
external components of the motor are stationary relative to the drill string, the bit box is the
only external component which has a rotary
motion independent of the rotational speed of
the drill string. The drill bit is screwed directly
into the bit box.
Near-bit Stabilizers

17

Near-bit Stabilizers are available with removable or integral stabilizers. The removable stabilizers are screwed on the bearing housing.
Occasionally certain clients wish to have the
option of installing different stabilizers on the
motor at the rig site to alter the directional performance of the motor. In that case, the motor
and the stabilizer(s) can be shipped separately
and a protective sleeve protects the external
threads of the bearing housing.

Motor Application
In todays cost-conscious oil and gas environment, companies and operators recognize
the positive contributions downhole drilling
motors can make to their bottom-line. The
application of downhole drilling motors are no
longer limited to conventional drilling, but has
expanded to other areas such as:

Steerable Drilling
Medium & Long Radius Drilling
Re-entry Drilling
Horizontal Drilling
Performance Drilling
Hole Opening
Hole Spudding
Conductor Pipe Drill Downs
Underreaming & Casing Cutting
Milling
Coring

PathFinder Drilling Motors offers a wide variety of motor congurations, bit speeds, ow
ranges, and power outputs to suit your particular need. Our state-of-the-art drill motor
is designed to exceed the load capacity of any
available drill bit in the industry today.

18

PLANNING THE JOB

To maximize the benefits of using drilling
motors, it is essential to select the right motor
for your specific application. To do so, the
following factors should be considered:
Hole Size
Different size PDM motors are designed to
function effectively within a certain size hole.
The Motor Specication section of this handbook has outlined the recommended hole sizes
for each motor size. We encourage the drillers
and the planners to adhere to these recommendations, since any deviation might result
in hole problems and /or cause a premature
motor failure.
Build-Rate Capability
Choose the proper motor bend angle to
generate the desired build/drop rates without
exceeding the maximum allowable DLS.
The logistical use of the stabilizer(s), in a
straight or bent motor, can also help you stay
on track. The technical staff at PathFinder
Drilling Motors can assist you with your selection, through the use of computer modeling
and software.
Bit Selection
The proper selection of the drill bit can
substantially increase the penetration
rate, reduce the drilling cost, and improve
the motor performance.

19

The bit TFA (Total Flow Area) has a great deal

of inuence on motor performance, as well as
the ability to clean the hole. An undersized bit
TFA will result in high pressure drop across
the bit and lower than expected ow rate. Inadequate ow rate can result in overheating
and damaging the bit, hole cleaning problems,
and will starve the motor of the adequate uid
needed to operate at its optimum performance.
On the other hand, oversized TFA might not
be able to provide the uid momentum necessary to properly remove the cuttings. In the
Formulas section of this handbook, necessary formulas are provided to calculate the bit
TFA. In the Motor Specication section of
this handbook, the recommended bit pressure
drop is listed for each size motor. If the ow
requirements needed for your specic application exceed the maximum allowable motor
ow rate, a bored rotor can be provided to
supply the additional uid.
For angle building runs, the gage length of
the bit becomes very important. High drag,
aggressive PDC bits exert more stress on the
motor components than the cone bits or less
aggressive bits. Also, high RPM motors combined with high WOB require more ow to
cool the bit (contact the bit manufacturer for
the minimum recommended bit ow rate).

20

Drilling Fluid
The most uid sensitive component of the
PDM motor is its stator rubber lining. The
PDM mud motors can operate successfully with any water-based mud, fresh water,
brine, sea water, any oil-based mud with a
minimum of 200F aniline point and less than
2% aromatic content.
The pH level of the drilling uid can affect the
life of the drilling motor. The recommended pH
level for PDM motors are between 9 and 10.
If the mud pH level and/or aniline point are
very close or slightly outside the specied limits, continuous circulation of the drilling uid
minimizes the extent of the damage to the
motor. If there is a prolonged interruption in
drilling, periodic circulation through the motor
might increase the motor life, since the stagnation of harmful uid inside the motor will
deteriorate it in an accelerated rate.
The solid contents of the drilling uid should
be maintained below 5% and the sand contents below 1%. Any deviation from the specied limits will cause the stator elastomer lining

21

to wear rapidly, which will result in a gradual

reduction in the output power of the motor.
Mud weight is another factor, which should be
considered when planning the drilling operation. Generally speaking, heavier mud (12 lb/
gal. or more) will wear the motor at a faster
rate than a lighter mud. When using a heavy
drilling uid, keep the sand contents below
0.5% to prevent possible washing in the drilling motor.
Any additives to the mud system should be
carefully selected to comply with these specications.
If a substantial amount of gas or air is trapped
in the drilling uid, it should be removed to
prevent any possible damage to the stator
rubber lining.
Medium to ne lost-circulation material can be
used, as long as they are mixed thoroughly. If
the drilling conditions require the use of coarse
material, we recommend the use of jet subs
above the motor to bypass a portion of the

22

particles and prevent the plugging

tor. The use of solid additives with
sharp texture should be avoided,
might scar or cut the stator rubber

of the moa rough or

since they
lining.

3000

One of the factors, which affects the physical

and mechanical properties of the stator elastomer lining, is the operating bottom hole
temperature. An increase in temperature
decreases the mechanical strength of the
stator rubber lining and causes it to swell. The
swelling will consequently increase the
rotor/stator interference. The excessive interference will increase the frictional heat generation and will over stress the rubber compound,
resulting in premature stator failure.

2500

Tensile Strength (PSI)

Hole Temperature

PathFinder alters the interference t between

the rotor and the stator to compensate for the
anticipated downhole temperature. Communicating the expected downhole temperature is
critical to a successful motor run.

23

tensile strength of the nitrile elastomer as the
temperature increases.

To increase the motor life, certain cautionary

measures should be employed when drilling in
a hot hole environment. These measures are
addressed in the Motor Operation section of
the handbook.

24

Rotor Nozzle Usage

With the exception of high-speed power sections (1:2 lobe ratio) most PDM rotors can be
bored to accept various size nozzles. Rotor
nozzles are used to increase the ow rate
to the bit by bypassing a portion of the uid
through the rotor. The use of a rotor nozzle
is recommended where the system hydraulics mandates a ow rate, which exceeds the
maximum allowable ow through the motor.
Please consult your PDM representative to
determine if the use of a rotor nozzle is
appropriate for your application. As a reference please refer to the Nozzle Selection
section of this handbook, for an indication of
the proper sizing of the rotor nozzle.
Power Requirements
When selecting a motor, close attention should
be paid to the power output of the motor. The
motor should be powerful enough to deliver
the required amount of torque, at the right
RPM, to turn the drill bit in response to the
application of various WOB.
Power is the measure of the rate at which
torque can be applied and is a function
of both torque and rpm. The concept of
power and torque can be combined by
saying that torque is used to overcome the rotational resistance provided by the formation,
while power is needed to increase the rate of

25

penetration. When choosing a motor based on

performance, the questions to ask should be,
Can the motor produce enough torque for the
application? if it can, the next question should
be, Which motor can apply the most power to
the formation? If the goal is to increase ROP,
the most powerful motor should be selected.
Most motors are available with Standard and
Performance Power Sections. A Performance
Motor can substantially increase the ROP, decrease stalling, and drill harsh formations with
more ease than a standard one.
Stator Rubber Compound Selection
Optimum completion of a drilling project relies
heavily on the proper selection of the stator
rubber compound. The main factors to consider are the maximum hole temperature, the
mud type and its additives, and the type of
harmful chemicals, which might be encountered during drilling.
PathFinder offers several different stator rubber compounds. All compounds swell due to
increase in temperature but behave differently
when exposed to chemical attack.
Standard Nitrile (NBR) and NBR-HR are
our most widely used compounds. They

26

are nitrile-based elastomers, which are suitable

for use with most water-based and oil-based
drilling uids and additives. The physical and
mechanical properties of NBR and NBR-HR degrade the most when exposed to high temperature and high chemical concentrations.
Highly Saturated Nitrile (HSN) is designed to
operate with oil-based or synthetic drilling uids. The use of this compound is not recommended with water-based mud. With proper
rotor and stator interference a stator, lined
with HSN compound, can operate at bottom
hole temperatures of up to 325F. Compared
to Standard Nitrile, it retains more of its physical and mechanical properties. Given the same
described drilling conditions, the HSN is designed to outlast and outperform NBR.
The Mud Treatment/Cleaning System
As previously noted, chemistry of the drilling
uid as well as its weight and texture are crucial to the life and performance of PDM motors.
On certain wells, the properties and/or chemical composition of the mud are continuously
changing. The changes are either intentional,
due to the operational demands, or unintentional because of the geological factors. Therefore
continuous monitoring of the drilling uid and
a competent mud treatment and cleaning system are necessary to maintain the properties
of the drilling uid at its desired level.

27

LCM Lost Circulation Material (LCM) should

be used in limited amounts and should be
thoroughly mixed and added to the drilling
uid. The addition of large slugs of LCM has
the potential to plug the motor and damage its
internal components. LCM should be limited
to ne to medium sized particles.
Abrasive media Sand content in the drilling
uid should be kept to a minimum and ideally below 1%. This is especially important if
the motor is operated at the upper end of its
ow range. Where possible the use of hematite weighting materials should be avoided as
these have shown to be unusually prone to
damaging the internal motor components.
Failure to follow the preceding recommendations can result in:
Rapid deterioration of the power section
and subsequent decline in the power
output.
Expeditious wear of the power transmission components, i.e. Flexible Coupling
and Bearing Pack.
Washing of the ow channels and weakening of critical components, especially
in high-ow application.
Plugging of the motor.
Seizure of the Bearing Pack.

28

MOTOR OPERATION
A sufcient mud treatment system should
be capable of continuously monitoring and
adjusting the PH level of the mud to desired
range (9< PH < 10 ). It should do the same
to maintain the aniline point of the oil-based
mud within the desired level (minimum of
200F and less than 2% aromatic content).
Infiltration / accumulation of substantial
amounts of gaseous matters in the drilling
uid pose a problem to the motor and should
be contended with.

This section of the handbook provides a general guideline regarding the use of PDM drilling motors.
PDM downhole motors arrive at the rig site
with all the internal and external connections
made up to the specied torque. The near-bit
stabilizer, if ordered, is installed and madeup to its full recommended torque value. The
bit box and top sub connections, specied by
the customer, are tted with thread protectors. Once the drill bit is installed, the motor is
ready for operation.
Rig-Site Motor Test

When drilling for gas or encountering gas

pockets, all or a portion of the gas molecules
gets imbedded in the drilling uid. Depending
on the relative properties of the mud and the
gas, some of the gas accumulates inside the
mud, while the remaining amount escapes the
mud voluntarily. When the gas bubbles are
pumped back into the well, the hydrostatic
pressure of the well bore gradually forces the
gas into the stator rubber compound through
its microscopic pores. The gas-impregnated
rubber sustains permanent and irreversible
structural damage, which degrades the elastomers properties. An adequate mud treatment
system should promptly recognize and combat
the problem by extracting the trapped gases.

29

Prior to running the motor into the hole, the

motor should be tested while on the surface.
The test can be performed with the bit attached, unless there might be a possibility of
the bit dragging on the internal walls of the
test area. In that case the motor should be
tested without the bit.
Remove the Top Sub and Bit Box thread protectors. Using the provided lift-sub, pick the
motor up and set it in the slips. Install any
available safety clamp and proceed to remove
the lift-sub. Attach the kelly to the motor and
remove the safety clamp. Lower the motor inside the hole until the gap between the top
of the bit box and the bearing housing is below the drilling nipple. Start the pumps and

30

gradually bring the GPM up to the desired limit. Make a note of the ow rate and the system
pressure. It might prove to be benecial to increase the ow rate in several increments and
note the standpipe pressure in every case. The
motor vibrates vigorously at higher ow rates.
This is one of the characteristics of the positive displacement motors and should not be a
cause for concern. The test is considered satisfactory if there are not any substantial ow
and pressure uctuations.
Also note that a portion of the drilling uid
has been discharged through the bottom of
the Bearing Housing and has drenched the Bit
Box. This is absolutely normal, since a small
percentage of the drilling uid is diverted
through the Bearing Pack to lubricate and cool
the bearings.
Aligning The Steering Device

31

passing through the BOP, casing shoe, liner

hangers, ledges, or key seats. If the circulating hole temperature is more than 220F, initiate circulation periodically to cool the stator
rubber lining. Pumping should be at a slow
rate and should last long enough to allow the
cooler uid to reach the power section.
If a oat valve is not used and the drill string
is empty, the annulus pressure combined with
the dynamic pressure, generated by piercing
through the uid, will force the drilling uid
through the bit and into the motor, causing the
motor to rotate in reverse. This could result in
unscrewing one or more internal components.
Therefore it is our recommendation to use at
least one oat valve in the bottom hole assembly. If the use of a oat valve is not feasible,
keep the drill string full at all times and trip in
slowly. Keep the running speed low when dealing with heavy mud and small liners.

A narrow and shallow line called the scribeline marks the bend plane of PDM motors. This
line is located on the Fixed or Adjustable Bent
Housing and is used to indicate the tool face.

Take pressure readings at three or four ow

rates close to operating ow rates when tripping in. This data can be used as a reference
to conduct similar tests following any drilling
problems.

Tripping In

Drilling With PDM Motor

If the motor is equipped with a xed or

adjustable bend housing (below the stator) and/or a bent sub (above the Top
Sub), exercise extreme caution when

Regardless of the application, certain common

procedures should be followed to ensure a
successful motor run. This section is designed
to outline certain guidelines to

32

assist the end users of PDM motors with their

drilling challenges.
After reaching the bottom of the hole, with the
bit off-bottom, start the pump and slowly increase the ow rate to the desired level (See
the Motor Specication section of the handbook for the recommended motor GPM). Once
the circulation is established, record the standpipe pressure reading. This pressure will be
higher than the one recorded on the surface.
Gradually lower the motor to the bottom of
the hole and apply weight to the bit. This will
increase the motor power output, which will
cause an increase in the standpipe pressure.
Continue to add weight until the desired RPM
at certain GPM is achieved (see Motor Specication section for RPM values). Record the on
- bottom pressure. The difference between
the on-bottom and off-bottom pressure is
called the differential pressure. As the motor
drills off, continue to add weight to maintain
the desired differential pressure.

33

The performance curves at the Motor Specication section of the handbook shows that the
motor RPM decreases as the differential pressure of the motor approaches its full-load limit.
Since ROP is directly related to the motor RPM,
operating the motor at its full-load might not

show any substantial increase in ROP, but it

will denitely reduce the stator life. Therefore,
for the best results keep the differential pressure at about 75% of its maximum recommended value.
If the motor is overloaded or is not allowed to
drill-off the applied weight, a rapid increase in
standpipe pressure will occur. At this point the
motor is at its stall pressure, which means
the bit is not rotating and the uid is passing
between the rotor and the stator without turning the rotor. Repeated stalling of the motor
could result in premature motor failure. When
stalling happens, stop the rotary table immediately and cutback the GPM by at least 50%
before lifting the motor up.
When tagging the bottom of the hole for the
rst time, or after changing the bit or the
bend angle, drill with lightweight for about 30
minutes to create a bit pattern at the bottom
of the hole. Failing to do so could result in
repeated stalling and subsequent stator damage.
If drilling in an environment where the circulating bottom-hole temperature exceeds
200F, certain precautionary measures should
be considered. As mentioned earlier, the mechanical strength of the stator rubber lining is
reduced substantially at elevated temperatures.
To reduce the magnitude of the stress on the

34

rubber, limit the differential pressure across the

motor to 70% of its full-load value. A prolonged
interruption in drilling results in additional swelling of the stator rubber. When bringing the
pumps up, start gradually at low GPM to allow
the stator rubber to cool. Increase the ow rate
to the desired level at several increments. Circulate off-bottom long enough to let the cooler
uid reach the motor. Lower the bit to the bottom slowly and resume drilling.
The use of performance motors in hot-hole environment can also improve the life of the motor, since due to additional power-generating
stages; the differential pressure per stage will
be less than a standard power section. Adding
lubricants to the drilling uid and keeping the
mud clean could also improve the stator life by
reducing the friction between the rotor and the
stator and decreasing the frictional heat.
Rotary RPM
During the drilling operation, it is a common
practice to rotate the drill string at a moderate
RPM. While rotating, a lateral force is exerted
on the drill bit by the formation. The magnitude
of the force is directly proportional to the bend
length, bend angle and formation hardness and
is inversely proportional to the hole size. The
induced bending stress on the motor raises concern about the possibility of fatigue failure.

35

Fatigue failure will happen in a nite number

of bending cycles, if the magnitude of the
bending stress exceeds the fatigue endurance
limit of the metal. Under these conditions the
rotary speed plays a signicant role in the successful completion of the well. A high rotary
RPM can substantially accelerate the generation and growth of fatigue cracks under severe
bending forces.
We have experienced the least number of motor problems, when the rotary speed and bend
angle are limited to 50 RPM and 1.50 respectively. So, to avoid a catastrophic connection
failure, we strongly urge you to adhere to
these limitations.
Jarring
When selecting a jar for a particular drilling
operation, avoid using one whose maximum
pull capacity exceeds the maximum allowable
pull for the motor, as listed in the Motor Specication section of this handbook. Replace
the motor, if it has been jarred for more than
three times.
Tripping Out Of the Hole (Re-running)
When pulling a bent assembly, exercise extreme caution at the tight spots such as BOP,
casing shoe, ledges, etc. Once on the surface,
ush the tool with clean water by placing a
water hose into the top sub and rotating the
bit box in the clockwise direction until the discharge is clear. If the bit box is locked-up, lay
the motor down.

36

Checking the Motor For Re-Run

If the previous run was relatively short and
the motor had not been exposed to a harsh
environment such as high hole temperature,
oil-base mud, sour gas, jarring, or any other
extreme condition, then a decision can be
made regarding the reuse of the motor. To
do so, the integrity of the power transmission components, i.e. the radial bearings and
thrust bearings and power transmission
coupling, should be conrmed.
-Radial Bearing: with the motor hanging securely from the kelly, rotate the bit box in both
directions for at least four complete revolutions. If the rotation indicates a tight spot in
the bearing, lay the motor down. Also check
the radial play of the bearing by shaking the
bit box from side to side. The design of radial
bearing allows for a small amount of radial
play. Do not reuse the motor if the play is excessive.
-Thrust Bearings: measure the thrust bearing
wear as followed (Figure 8). With the motor
hanging securely, record the bit box/bearing
housing gap (dimension A). Stand the motor on the rig oor and apply moderate axial
force. Measure and record the same gap (dimension B ). If the clearance
(A-B) exceeds the allowable limits, as outlined
in the following table, the motor is not suitable for rerun.

Bit Off Bottom

This section of the handbook provides critical

information regarding the physical characteristics and performance parameters of PDM drilling motors.
PDM is continuously improving its motors and
procedures. Therefore, the information in this
section can change without prior notice. All the
changes will be reected in the latest revision
of the handbook or subsequent PDM brochures
and literature.
The ow rate, RPM, torque, differential pressure correlation is presented graphically for
each motor. The proper interpretation of these
graphs is crucial in maintaining the specied
operating limits of the motor.

To determine the dependent characteristics of

a motor, locate the desired differential pressure on the corresponding axes. Draw a perpendicular line until it intersects the curve representing a particular dependent characteristic
at a certain GPM (the output torque is not a
function of the motor GPM). From the point of
intersection, draw a horizontal line to intersect
the desired vertical axis.
For example, the following curve shows that
at 300 psi of differential pressure and 200
GPM, the approximate speed and torque of
this particular motor are 96 rpm and 1560 ft-lbs
respectively.

Interpreting Performance Graphs

The characteristics of a motor can be sub divided into two different categories, independent and dependent. The independent characteristics are the ones, which can be controlled
by the driller (i.e. differential pressure and ow
rate). The dependent characteristics are those,

Rig Floor Setup:

F2000 Adjustable Bend Connecting Rod

Housing
The Adjustable unit is located as an integral part of the
F2000 motor between the upper connection on the
Bearing Housing and lower connection of the Stator
unit. Its construction is made up of three main external
components, i.e. Upper Sub, Sliding Spacing Sleeve, and
the Lower Sub. By orienting the central connection
within the sliding spacer sleeve the bend angle of the
sub can be varied from 0 - 2.30.
This procedure is applicable through the various
product sizes, i.e. 4 3/4 to 9 5/8 as the basic design
is similar throughout.

Use the break out tong to both break and make up the
connection. The make up tong should be xed to a deadline. Use an Ezy torque if available, if not, load cell on the
deadline needs to be tted. Ideally, both should be used
to cross-check torque calibrations.

Rig Floor Operational Procedure:

1. Set the motor in the slips around the bearing housing
area so the sliding spacer sleeve is at a convenient
working height.
2. Latch the make Up Tong to the lower sub, clear of the
Sliding Spacer Sleeve connection to prevent crimping
the internal connection. For 4 3/4 and 6 3/4 tools,
four inches below the shoulder. For all other sizes,
ve inches below the shoulder.
3. Latch the Break Out Tong midway over the Sliding
Spacer Sleeve and the Upper Sub.

4. Break the central connection a full half turn.

When carrying out this procedure Do not allow

the setting mark on the Sliding Spacer Sleeve
to rotate out with the Lower or Upper limit of the
Bend Angle Setting Marks.

5. Remove the Rig Tongs from the assembly.

6. Inspect the Sliding Spacer Sleeve and make sure

that the shoulder of the sleeve has separated
between the spacer sleeve and the upper housing.
It may be necessary to lightly tap the sleeve
with a soft hammer to free it from the internal
keys.

Rotation of the Sliding Spacer Sleeve will also be

aided by supporting the weight of the assembly
above the connection by the travelling block i.e.
oating the weight of the tool in the slips. If
this option is used a safety clamp/dog collar
should be tted directly above the slips.

If difculties are encountered on rotating the

Sliding Spacer Sleeve on 9 5/8 assemblies
with chain tongs, rig tongs may be used. The
application of this however must be made to
limit the applied breakout torque on the
connection to +15,000 ft-lbs. Fitting of the
tongs must be also carefully controlled to
prevent crushing the assembly or damaging the
tools integrity i.e. with the lower tong being
placed over the Lower Sub/Sliding Spacer sleeve
and the upper tong placement 10 above the
sealing shoulder of the Upper Sub/Spacer Sleeve.

7. Fix a chain tong to the Slider Spacer Sleeve and

rotate the same as required to align the setting
mark on the Sliding Spacer Sleeve with the adjacent Bend Angle Setting Marks.

8. Latch the make up tong across the connection

between the upper sub and the spacer sleeve.
Using either the rotary table or a chain tong
(with manual handling considerations today the
chain tong may not be an option) rotate the
lower sub until it shoulders tightly into the
spacer sleeve. Unless the make up tong has
caused a standoff then the upper connection
on the spacer sleeve should also be shouldered
tightly.
Do not allow the Sliding Spacer Sleeve to
rotate at this time, as the bend orientation will
be changed.
9. Re-latch the Rig Tongs as per gure 4, i.e. t
the Make Up Tong so it is mid-way over the
Sliding Spacer Sleeve and the Upper Sub. The
Break Out Tong can then be tted to the Lower
Sub maintaining the same minimum clearance
as in Step 2.
PathFinder is an Operating Unit of Smith International, Inc.

torque is reached hold the line pull at 90 for

move it up onto the upper sub and re-latch.
Re-apply the full torque across both connections
simultaneously.
If there is little or no movement then this conrms
that the full torque has been applied across both
connections and there has not been any standoff
between the spacer sleeve and the upper sub.

12. Remove the rig tongs and inspect the assembly

to ascertain that the orientation of the Setting
Mark on the Sliding Spacer Sleeve is correctly
aligned with the Bend Angle Setting Marks as
per requirements.

Operational Notes:

13. Upon completion of the re-adjustment of the

assembly, the corresponding tool face alignment
must be re-conrmed with the relevant MWD
orientation marker. To fulll this requirement
the Tool Face Scribe Lines on the Adjustable
Housing Top Sub must be used. These can be
seen in Figure (3) and are the uppermost set of
gures on the assembly.

At no time should the Rig Tongs be placed on any

other adjacent connection of the F2000 motor as
these connections are not rig serviceable.

Be aware of any rig instrumentation errors in the

control of the Make Up Torque, i.e. broken
gauges, leaking tong sensors, etc. This is due
to the applied Make Up Torque and the Adjust
able Assembly being critical to its overall
performance.

If rig tongs are utilized to aid in the orientation

of the Sliding Spacer Sleeve, be aware of the
possible mis-application and the inuence this
could have over the integrity of the assembly.

Do not use the Bend Angle Settings Marks for

the orientation of the PDM with the MWD. This
will result in the orientation of these being
+90-180 in error with the corresponding
possible catastrophic course direction problems.

NOZZLE SELECTION
For proper sizing of the nozzle, from the Motor
Specication section of this handbook, obtain
the recommended ow rate through the motor at the desired RPM and differential pressure. Subtract this ow rate from the total desired ow rate to obtain the required ow rate
through the nozzle (q). Adjust the ow rate for
the actual mud weight as follows:

A28

NOZZLE SELECTION EXAMPLE

A 6 , 4:5, 7.0 stage motor is used to drill a
well. A 12.5 lb/gal mud at 750 GPM will be used
to complete this well. If the motor is operated
at 700 psi of differential pressure, determine if it
is necessary to nozzle the rotor? If so, what is
the proper nozzle size?
SOLUTION
The maximum allowable flow rate through a
6 , 4:5, 7.0 stage motor is 600 GPM, as listed
in the motor Specication section of this handbook. Therefore the additional 150 GPM should
bypass the power section through the rotor.
To determine the nozzle size, rst adjust the ow
rate for the actual mud weight:
5

Q = 150 x .35 x (12.5) = 185.62 GPM

The chart on the previous page shows that to
pump 185.62 gallons at 700 psi differential pressure requires a 16/32 nozzle.
