Surface Treated Coatings and Ship Hull Performance

Maxim Candries Hydrex nv / Subsea Industries nv International Marine and Offshore Coatings Conference May 18, 2009

BACKGROUND

Hydrex nv : 35 years of underwater ship hull maintenance and repairs Subsea Industries nv : 25 years of underwater maintenance technology

What are Surface Treated Coatings?

The working principle of a Surface Treated Coating (STC) exists in providing a total package whereby a highly durable coating is treated inwater resulting in an extensivelyprolongedservicelife Environmentallysafe:
biocidefree lowVOC alienspeciesmigrationsolution

Typical STC formulation

Main components are vinyl ester resin containing a high volume of glassplatelets Impermeable barrier that protects against corrosion and marine fouling Extremelydurable

Durable protection Interscan - M/V Patriot

Conventional paint system after 18 months

STC after 2 years on same vessel and subject to same conditions as earlier period

Hull protection M/V Patriot After three winters operating in ice

Superior icebreaker strength

Ice breaker paint

Conventional paint section shows impact damage and corrosion

STC
Section with both STC and conventional ice breaker paint STC section has no impact damage or corrosion

Durable protection Nordgard General cargo ship

STC after one year: superficial scratches of anchor chain barely affect paint film

STC after one year: aft area

Not conditioned

Conditioned

Treatment: special technology of cleaning and conditioning

Conditioning improves the surface characteristics of the coating Cleaning removes any marine fouling in an early stage of development Conditioning and cleaning may be done simultaneously

Typical cross-sections of STC at different stages: (a) newly applied (b) after conditioning (c) gradual exposition to re-attaching fouling organisms (d) after cleaning/conditioning

Efficient in-water treatment

In-water treatment

Surface characteristics
Surface characteristics of STC are very different from conventional antifoulings

Frictional resistance characteristics

Towing tank tests carried out with 5m long friction plates 4 surfaces tested: uncoated, conventional coating, STC newly applied and conditioned STC

Frictional resistance characteristics

Compared to the conventional paint system, the frictional resistance was measured to be 7.7% lower for the freshly applied STC and 9.6% lower for the conditioned STC. Full-scale extrapolations point to 4% reduction in fuel savings

STCandshiphullperformance
As a once in a lifetime coating, no repainting is necessary for the lifetime of the vessel, except for sporadic touch-ups Drydocking time can be extended: 12 year interval feasible Provides extremely high levels of protection against corrosion, pitting, mechanical impact and cavitation STC unaffected by aggressive fouling after long stationary periods in tropical waters Fuel savings will be realized by enhanced hydrodynamic qualities after hull conditioning treatment Increased speeds can be sustained throughout the hulls lifetime by optimized treatment interval Non-toxic
