The approach is the difference between the economizer water outlet temperature and the Saturation temperature of the steam. A good approach point is between 15F - 30F. This temperature will guarantee that no steaming will occur in the economizer section. It is not always possible to achieve an approach point in this zone. If the saturation temperature is too high, achieving an approach temperature in this zone will lead to a stack outlet temperature well below the dew point, resulting in use of special steels to avoid corrosion.

PINCH POINT Lower Pinch means higher heat recovery and higher capital cost.

APPROACH TEMPERATURE Lower approach means higher heat recovery and higher capital cost. Lower approach means higher steaming potential under upset/partial load conditions.

APPROACH TEMPERATURE / APPROACH TEMPERATURE Difficult for unfired units as heat source is uncontrolled. Some what better for supplementary fired units as heat imput is partially controllable.

Very narrow for unfired units.

NUMEROUS OPERATING MODES Higher operating modes to suit operation. Design needs checking for worst conditions.

SYSTEM DRAFT LOSS Higher the permissible draft loss. Lower is the capital cost and GT output.

STEAM TEMPERATURE CONTROL RANGE Comparatively wider for fired units as EXH. Gas reheat temperature has a considerable impact on steam temp.

FIRING TEMPERATURE LIMITATION Restriction on firing temperature due to construction. All operating modes to satisfy this limit.
