9:00-9:10 Word Study: The teacher begins book talk on the book A Light In the Attic By Shell Silverstein Teach mini-lesson on the elements of a poem (stanza, rhyme scheme etc.;) Teacher facilitates directions and is available for questions Teacher asks for questions, comments and shares of the students work.

Students read poems from their own copy of A Light in the Attic and identity the parts of a poem. Students share what they have identified from their poems.

Teacher reads and talks about poem she wrote to model an example.

Mini-lesson: Teacher explains how to write a poem: includes elements of poetry and goes over the different types of poems.

Students listen and take notes at their desk.

Teacher gives out directions and walks around the classroom to be available for questions.

Students begin drafting a poem of their own in their writing journal, including all elements of a poem.

Teacher asks for students to share questions and drafts of poem.

Students say questions and comments and share their drafts.

Teach mini-lesson on how to identify a rhyme scheme

Teacher will pass out various different poems to partners of students

Students will work with a partner to identify the rhyme scheme of a poem

Teacher will have each pair of students write their rhyme scheme on the board. Teacher will go over how to write a proper poem and include reminders

Each pair of students will share their rhyme scheme with the class on the board. Students will listen and ask questions if they have any.
