e hope your visit to Minnedosa is enjoyable and
that during your time in our community you will
not require our emergency services. However,
if you do need emergency assistance, our community is
prepared with a high level of quality services.
Minnedosa is served by a dedicated team of well-trained
emergency responders, whether its reghters, paramedics
or police.
The Minnedosa Fire Department, located at the corner of
Main Street and 5th Avenue N.W., includes two re trucks,
a pick-up truck with small pumper unit and a top-of-the-
line rescue unit, all equipped with the latest rescue tools
and equipment.
If you happen to become ill while visiting Minnedosa,
our community offers a medical clinic, located at 129 2nd
Avenue S.W. (west of the clock tower) with ve physicians
on staff. Walk-ins are available each morning beginning at
10 a.m. Afternoon visits are by appointment. In the event
of a medical emergency, our area is served by a dedicated
EMS team of paramedics with fully equipped ambulances.
The Minnedosa District Health Centre is located on 1st
Avenue, S.W., the south hill, features a 24-hour, seven
day a week Emergency Room. Our twenty-year-old health
care facility features 27 acute care rooms and offers public
health, lab and x-ray services.
Located just north of the hospital is the local detachment
ofce of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, which serve
our community as part of the Spruce Plains Area RCMP.

published annually by The Minnedosa Tribune Ltd. The publication is
distributed free of charge throughout the year to several locations in Minnedosa
and throughout Manitoba and Canada.

Rodeo
I
n
recent years,
Minnedosa has seen the
return of a local rodeo. After many years absence,
the Minnedosa Rodeo was resurrected in 2004 by a
group of community residents who felt there was a
rodeo gap which needed flling. Boy were they right! Te
rodeo has continued to grow in popularity and in 2009,
the Minnedosa Rodeo was named Rodeo of the Year by
the Heartland Rodeo Association.
Te Minnedosa Rodeo is held during the August
long weekend and features a number of familiar rodeo
events such as bareback, bull riding, calf roping, saddle
bronc, barrel racing, team roping, and goat tying! For
the children there is the always popular Muttin Bustin
and other childrens activities and attractions including
live
music and a
Rodeo Dance. Te local rodeo
committee has also hosted a number of Manitoba
High School Rodeo events during its Heartland Rodeo
weekend.
Many of the rodeo competitors making an
appearance at the Minnedosa Rodeo are from the local
area, including a few hometown rodeo stars.
Polish up your boots, put on a pair of jeans, grab
your hat and head on down to the Minnedosa Rodeo for
an unforgettable down home country experience.
Fun Fest
S
ince 1963,
Minnedosa has hosted an
unforgettable summer celebration! Over the years
there have been a number of name changes for this festival
but no matter what you call the current Fun Fest, there is
something special for the whole family.
Te festivities kick of with Kiddies Day targeted toward
the children. Tere are numerous games and activities
planned as well as a Kiddies Parade. During the parade,
many children like to dress up in costumes and decorate
their bicycles or wagons to show of to the parade spectators.
Te big Fun Fest Parade is held Saturday morning and
features foats, marching bands, animals, vintage cars and
tractors, and pretty much everything else a parade should
have.
Other popular Fun Fest attractions include pancake
breakfasts,
lunches, suppers,
raf es, social gatherings, dances, bingo,
and soap box derby. A downtown Farmers Market and
Music Jam were introduced in 2010 and proved to be a
success which will continue this year.
Fun Fest wraps up on Sunday with Heritage Day, a
celebration of the past, which is hosted at the local Museum
and Heritage Village.
If you happen to be in the area during the second
weekend in July, be sure to take in some Fun Fest activities.
Its a summer celebration with something for the whole
family to enjoy.

Heritage Village
S
tep back in
time at the Heritage Village.
If you are interested in seeing how people lived
and how things were done back in the good old days be
sure to take a tour of the Minnedosa Museum and Heritage
Village. Open during the months of July and August, as well
as other times of the year by appointment, the Heritage
Village features ten beautifully restored buildings, each full
of artifacts from days gone by.
During your tour of the village you will visit a blacksmith
shop, one-room school house, country church, trappers
cabin, period home, log barn and more.
Te most unique building on the village grounds is the
two-storey octagon display building, which was moved onsite
from the Minnedosa Fairgrounds and restored back to its
former glory. It is one of only three such buildings still standing
i n
the province
and is the only one which
features its original
upper cupola. Other village attractions include a working
windmill, wooden waterwheel and trout pond.
On July 15th the Heritage Village will come alive with a
pioneer church service, tours of the buildings, BBQ, music
and dancing during the museums annual Heritage Day
celebration.
To get to the Museum and Heritage Village turn east
of Main Street at 3rd Avenue N.E. and travel four blocks. A
welcome sign and stone gate will welcome you.
Winter Fun
M
innedosa
is a fabulous tourist
destination during the hot summer months, but there is
also a lot of activity and special attractions for all ages during the
chilly winter months.
Skiing is a huge attraction and Minnedosa is fortunate to be home
to a local downhill skiing venue, Ski Valley. Located 7 km northwest
of the Town of Minnedosa, Ski Valley ofers nine runs for various
levels of expertise, from beginners to advanced.
Snowmobiling is also a huge part of winter recreation in the area.
Minnedosa is home to the Valley Snow Hawks Snowmobile Club,
which promotes snowmobile fun, safety and tourism. Troughout
the winter season, the club hosts a number of snowmobile related
events and gives back to the community by way of fnancial
contributions. Minnedosa is connected to a groomed trail route
in the area and there is a designated snowmobile route within
Town limits for snowmobile enthusiasts to use to get in and out of
the community and fll up with gas without great disturbance to
residents.
For the past few
winters, Healthy Active Minnedosa has
established an outdoor skating oval in the community.
Tis attraction is available for use by residents at no charge and has
become another popular winter attraction for Minnedosa.
Te frozen surface of Minnedosa Lake is the perfect foundation
of ice fshing huts and each winter, a small community of shacks
develops on the lake. Minnedosa, like most Canadian communities
is no stranger to hockey or curling activity. Troughout the winter,
the local Arena and Curling Club are both hopping with activity as
our local hockey players and curlers compete in various games,
tournaments and bonspiels.
If you happen to be visiting Minnedosa during the winter months,
do not despair. Our community is a year-round destination.

Japanese Garden
A
sister
community partnership
between Minnedosa and Ishii, Japan began in the mid
1990s. The purpose behind the twinning project was to
promote friendship and to facilitate the mutual understanding
of our respective cultures.
The partnership has been recognized in our community
with the establishment of a Japanese garden which is located
behind the Minnedosa Regional Library. The garden serves as
a place for all Minnedosans and visitors to enjoy as well as
serving as a memorial for Yuko Miyaura, one of the young
Ishii delegates, who visited Minnedosa before her untimely
passing.
Establishing an authentic Japanese garden in Canada took
a great deal of research and planning due to drastic climate
differences between the two countries. Several non-plant
features
can be found in the
Minnedosa Japanese Garden to make
it appear more authentic. These include a basin made of
rock which is known as Chozubacki, a Shishi Odoshi, which
is made of bamboo and a rain chain called Kusari doi.
A static (non changing) Zen Garden has also been
incorporated with the Minnedosa Japanese Garden. The Zen
Garden is surrounded by a bamboo fence.
When in Minnedosa, be sure to drop by the library and
visit the Japanese Garden and take in the solitude and relaxing
atmosphere it offers visitors. Youll come away feeling
refreshed and energized.

weekend has rocked in
Minnedosa since 1996 when a classic rock music festival
was born. Today, that festival is known as Rockin the Fields
of Minnedosa and has grown from a three-day to four-day
music extravaganza.
Rockin the Fields features a number of big name
musical entertainers but is also much more than just music.
A number of unique venders can be found onsite and special
attractions such as a beach volleyball tournament add to the
weekends excitement. Onsite camping is available. Campers
always get in the spirit of the festival and many choose to decorate
their campsites in some very creative and unique ways. A stroll
through the camping grounds is always a worthwhile activity
as you just never know what creativity you may nd. The
festival
is currently driven
by a dedicated and hard working crew
of fans who work hand in hand with locals to benet the
entire community. A number of local service clubs help out
with the festival in exchange for a percentage of the festivals
proceeds. Since this partnership began, over $105,000 has
been donated back to the community.
Plan to spend your August long weekend with us
and help us Rock the Fields of Minnedosa! The festival
site is located on the top of the hill, north of the Minnedosa
campground along Provincial Road #262. The site sits along
the eastern shores of the north end of Minnedosa Lake.

A
popular
attraction in our valley is the
Minnedosa Spillway. Located at the southeast corner
of Minnedosa Lake, the current spillway is the second such
structure to stand at this location. The original collapsed on
May 4th, 1948, causing a major ooding disaster for downtown
Minnedosa. A book on this event, Hold Back the Dam, was
produced by the Minnedosa District Heritage Foundation to
mark the 50th anniversary of the collapse in 1998. This book is
still available for purchase at a number of local businesses.
History of the spillway and Minnedosa Lake dates back to
1907 when a group of local men created the Minnedosa
Power Company. The plan was to construct a dam, spillway,
hydro-electric generating station and lake, which would serve
as a reservoir to run the power turbines and supply electric power
to the booming Town of Minnedosa. Our man-made lake is
100 years old as water rst owed over the logs of the Minnedosa
spillway
on April 10th, 1912.
For the three years following the
spillway collapse in 1948, the lake remained dry with
only the Little Saskatchewan River meandering through its
once pristine waters. A combined effort of the Town and
surrounding Rural Municipalities convinced government
departments that the lake and spillway must be rebuilt to
serve as a major water conservation area for the entire
district. Work on the current spillway began in 1950 and was
completed two years later. Maintenance and repairs to the
spillway and earthen dam that holds the waters of Minnedosa
Lake back from the town have been ongoing with the most
recent major stabilization project undertaken in 2009 and 2010.

Highway #262 between
downtown Minnedosa and Minnedosa Lake, you will nd
a herd of bison housed in a large, fenced compound known
as the Bison Park.
Decades ago, bison herds, numbering in the millions
roamed the plains and crossed the Little Saskatchewan River
Valley as part of their natural migration route. In March
2006, the bison returned to Minnedosa, thanks to a tourism
project developed by the Minnedosa Lake Rehabilitation
Committee. For the past 16 years, our local herd of bison
have been a popular attraction for both local residents and
visitors to our community.
The bison park is designed to provide a spacious grazing
ground for the herd as well as visibility for spectators from
all sides. The bison remain onsite at the local compound
year-
round, so it does
not matter what time of year you visit
Minnedosa, you can always visit the bison! If you are
fortunate enough to be in the area during April or May, there
is a great chance you will see newborn calves roaming close
to their mothers.
Bison bulls live for an average of 20 years and weigh
in at an average of 900 kg or 2,000 lbs. The female bison
(cows) have an average lifespan of 17 years and usually
weigh in the neighbourhood of 545 kg or 1,200 lbs. Bison
calves are born between April and May and weigh an average
of 27 kg or 60 lbs.

in excess of 600 feet,
Minnedosas fish ladder is the longest in Manitoba.
The purpose of the fish ladder is to allow various
species of fish to travel from the bottom of the Little
Saskatchewan River, up into Minnedosa Lake and then
further up the chain of lakes. Target fish species that
will utilize the run include mature walleye, northern
pike and white sucker.
Minnedosas fish ladder emulates a natural type
of channel system. It consists of a series of pools and
rock riffles. Each pool is approximately nine inches
apart in elevation which gives the fish a chance to rest
before continuing their climb up the fast moving water
as it moves down the riffles. In total, there are 22 pool and
riffle
structures along
the fish ladder, before the fish
travel through a 55 foot culvert and make one last
burst through the exit of the structure into Minnedosa
Lake. Although man made, the fish ladder has a natural
appearance, as if it was meant to be in its current
location.
Excellent viewing areas can be found along the
entire length of the fish ladder which is located just
south of Minnedosa Lake, next to the spillway. The
best time to view the action of the fish ladder is in
early spring during peak spawning season.

he lakes and
rivers in and around Minnedosa
are abundant with many types of sh and challenges for
all skill levels of anglers. Some common species found in
the area include Northern Pike (Jack), Walleye (Pickerel),
Perch and Rock Bass.
A great spot to introduce young anglers to the sport of
shing is at the trout pond located at the Heritage Village.
This pond operates on a catch and release basis early in the
season. Later in the season, anglers are welcome to keep
what they catch. More information on these regulations is
posted near the pond.
Another great spot for trout shing is at Antons Lake,
which is located north of the rest stop at the intersection
of highways 10 and 16 north west of Minnedosa. This
l ake
is stocked with
brown and rainbow trout. The limit
is two sh each and all are welcome, as long as they
hold a current Manitoba shing license. Although no motor
boats are allowed on Antons Lake, electric motors are.
Some good shing spots are just above the spillway
along the shores of Minnedosa Lake and below the dam
and all along the shores of the Little Saskatchewan River
which meanders through the community. During the winter
months, many locals enjoy ice shing on Minnedosa Lake.

Walk the Trails
I
f you
enjoy walking and nature,
Minnedosa has a number of trails available to check
out. Entrances to the various trails can be found throughout the
community such as near the CP engine and caboose in Tanners
Park, just east of the Main Street Bridge. You can also enter
the trails at the Heritage Village, or at the spillway south of
Minnedosa Lake. There is also a newly developed walking
trail near the schools, which are located west of Main Street on
Armitage Avenue.
As you wander along the many pathways available in the
community, you will notice a number of special attractions.
In addition to the natural attractions and scenic views, some
of the trails include various informational or historic plaques,
benches for resting and miniature tness centres where you
can stretch, do some chin ups, tummy curls or more! There is
also the Rotary Suspension Bridge, located southeast of the
Heritage
Village and great
viewing of the Bison Park from some of
the trails.
Along the dam, west of the spillway is the Flag Walk which
features the ags of the country as well as some from other
countries, which represent the homelands of our areas pioneers.
For a walk through rustic nature, check out the Oxbow Nature
Trail. This trail is located south of Minnedosa Lake, between the
spillway and Heritage Village. As you make your way through
the winding path, you will behold much of the natural beauty
this area offers. From native grasses, wildowers, shrubs and
trees to a variety of bird species, you are sure to spot something
different each time you wander along the trail.

hustle and bustle of
city shopping behind and enjoy a relaxing shopping
adventure in downtown Minnedosa. Our business district is
centrally located in the heart of Minnedosa and is made up of
numerous restaurants, stores and unique shops each with its
own special line of treasures for shoppers.
Minnedosa has a strong Chamber of Commerce with 148
members. The Chamber membership list, found elsewhere
in this publication, reads like a whos who of the Minnedosa
business district. Throughout the year, the local Chamber is
active with weekly lunch meetings and initiatives to promote
and encourage residents to shop local. These include a Shopper
Reward Card, coupon sheets and during the weeks leading up
to Christmas, a shop local gift guide to advertise some of the
many gift ideas available here in our own business community.
The
Chamber hosts
a town-wide garage sale during
May long weekend, Ag Appreciation BBQ in June,
and Santa Day with free photos with Santa in December. The
Chamber also sponsors the community parade during Fun Fest.

Lions Tower
L
ocated on
the eastern edge of the Town
of Minnedosa, you can access the Lions Lookout Tower
by ascending the gravel road towards the Minnedosa
Cemetery. The tower provides a spectacular view of
Minnedosa Lake, beach and campground areas as well as
the Bison Park and other attractions.
Located at the top of the Lookout Tower is a plaque and
a sighting post that details the location and the historical
importance of Odanah Pass.
Also, quite a nice view is provided of the Heritage
Village and Museum grounds located below the tower just
beyond the Bison Compound and the Rotary Suspension
Bridge.

Located
in that same area are the
trout pond, heritage walking trails and the
Oxbow Nature Trail that leads from the Heritage Village
to the spillway and sh ladder area.
Take your time and take a short walk through the area.
There are over 20 historical plaques to be viewed along the
various trails detailing the history of our town and area.
During the autumn months, the views from this lofty
position are nothing short of spectacular.

Historic Sighting Posts
O
ne of the
best places to learn the story
of Minnedosa is the sighting posts located on the east
side of the spillway along the Beach Road. (Hwy #262).
Here you will nd plaques depicting nine specic points of
interest located in the immediate area.
Beginning with Old Crossing on the Carlton Trail
located in the vicinity of the farm located at the north end
of Lake Minnedosa and the North West Fur Trading Post
which was located at a spot which is now covered by the
lake to the once feared Norquay Rapids, since tamed
with the construction of the dam and spillway.
The sighting posts also point the way to Tanners
Crossing and the building of the railroad in 1883.
Since the 1850s Minnedosa has been a very busy
community. The Carlton Trail split into three separate trails
east
of Minnedosa
and there were three distinct
river crossings within a few miles of the town.
These crossings were: Old Crossing, mentioned above,
and Tanners Crossing, located just down the road about
half a mile and Hares Crossing, which was located about
ve miles westward where the valley turns south towards
Rapid City. All three crossings operated at the same time
with Old Crossing eventually being replaced by the other
two.
All trafc ceased along the Carlton Trail and the crossings
with the coming of the Manitoba and Northwestern Railway
in 1883, the year Minnedosa was incorporated as a town.
Parks and
Playgrounds
T
hroughout
the community, there are a
number of parks and playgrounds for children and
families to enjoy. Pictured above is Tanners Crossing Park
located on the east side of Main Street just south of the
bridge. Te park was created in 1970 by the local Railroad
Centennial Committee. Highlights of the park include a
decommissioned Canadian Pacifc engine and caboose as
well as a band stand dedicated to the memory of former
Minnedosa Mayor and musician, Rick Everett.
Downtown Minnedosa also features a number of
small corner parks, known as Founders Parks. Tese parks, a
project undertaken by the Chamber of Commerce Business
Improvement Committee can be found along Main Street at
the corners of 2nd Avenue North, 3rd Avenue North, Armit-
age Avenue and 2nd Avenue South (across from the clock
t o we r ) .
Further south on Main
Street, is a Founders Park dedicated to
Minnedosa resident and former Manitoba Premier, the late
Walter Weir. Tis one is located at the corner of Main Street
and 3rd Avenue S.W.
Te Elks playground can be found at Minnedosa
beach, just north of the spillway. Tere are also playgrounds
located at the corners of 4th Avenue and 2nd Street N.W.,
8th Avenue and 2nd Street S.W., and along 5th Avenue
N.E. between 3rd and 4th Street. Enjoy some time alone or
together with family and friends at one our beautiful parks
or playgrounds.

What is that siren
all about?
W
hen visiting Minnedosa you will hear a wailing
siren at certain times during the day. Do not be
alarmed, the siren sounds three times a day at 8
a.m., 12 noon, and 6 p.m.
The siren is also used in certain emergency situations. If
you hear the siren wail at numerous intervals, it is alerting
local re department volunteers of a re or emergency call
in which their assistance is required.

Skate the Lake
F
or
one weekend
in February, the frozen surface
of Minnedosa Lake becomes home to an annual pond
hockey tournament. This event was organized not only as
a great opportunity for playing some outdoor hockey, but
also as a community fundraiser. Since its inception in
2007, Skate the Lake has donated over $21,000 back to
the community. Funding recipients have included the local
Community Daycare and the Minnedosa Regional Events
Centre project. This project will include the development of
a new arena, tness centre and outdoor sports elds at the
current fairgrounds along the north hills of town.
Skate the Lake is operated with a number of special rules to
ensure safe and fair game play for all. Customized nets are used
in place of goalies. Multiple thirty minute games are played on
the
various rinks
cleared on Lake Minnedosa. The
ve-player teams are encouraged to be creative and
come up with their own team name and jerseys. The teams
have certainly taken that challenge with a number of unique
team names such as the Bad Mother Puckers, and Burgess
Quality Dudes (in honour of our local grocery store Burgess
Quality Foods).
If you happen to be in Minnedosa during that one special
weekend in February, be sure to head out to the lake for
some entertaining pond hockey. Its for a good cause!
