MATRIX SYSTEM

DEFINITION: The device used to restore anatomic contours and proximal contact to proximal tooth . TYPES OF MATRIX SYSTEM: 1) Posterior Matrix System. 2) Anterior Matrix System. 3) Sectional Matrix System. 4) Auto Matrix System. POSTERIOR MATRIX SYSTEM: It is most commonly used matrix system and it includes: 1)Universal Retainer. 2)Matrix Bands. 3)Wedge.

UNIVERSAL RETAINER: It holds the matrix band in position and it is also known astofflemire retainer. It usually placed on buccal surface of tooth being restored.

TOFFELMIRE RETAINERS MATRIX BANDS: Strip or band place so as to serve as a retaining outer wall that support the tooth restoration to re-create proper form and function. TYPES OF MATRIX BANDS: 1)Universal Bands.

2)Extension Bands.

UNIVERSAL BAND: It used in class 2 preparation when proximal box is prepared and the cusp are intact. It is made up of stainless steel. EXTENSION BAND: It is used in deeper class 2 preparation that need gingival Extensions because of loss of cusp.It is also made up of stainless steel. PLACEMENT OF MATRIX BAND: The smaller circumference of band placed towards the side of gingival edge and larger circumference placed towards the side of incisal edge.

MATRIX BANDS

WEDGE: Anatomic apparatus placed in the embrasure space to secure the matrix to the tooth and provide proper contour for restoring class 2 cavity. It is triangular in shape and it is made up of plastic and wood.

ANTERIOR MATRIX SYSTEM: It is used in anterior restoration and it placed interproximally. It includes: 1)Celluloid Strip. 2)Mylar Strip.

CELLULOID STRIP: It is a polyester strip used as a separate matrix between teeth during composite and amalgam filling, It also used in finishing of filling and it also resist fractures.

MYLAR STRIP: A trademarked thin polyester film and it is also used as a separate matrix between teeth during restoration.

SECTIONAL MATRIX: It is a matrix held in place by a spring loaded ring to create natural contacts and profile. It is usually used in posterior restoration and it is available in three sizes , it is oval may be rounded or elongated in shape. ADVANTAGE: 1)It include natural contour for better control of contact areas and embrasure 2)Ease of placement. 3)Better visualization of operative field. 4)comfort for dentist and patient both.

AUTO MATRIX SYSTEM: Matrix system used to create a temporary wall to support tooth restoration without using a retainer. It is available in four different sizes medium-thin ,narrow-regular ,medium-regular and wide-regular.It is made up of stainless steel or clear plastic matrix. This system consist of a tightening and snipping device. ADVANTAGE: 1)This matrix can be positioned on both buccal and lingual side. DISADVANTAGE: 1)They are not preformed and contouring them to restablish anatomical profile of proximal surface turns out to be difficult sometime.

AUTO MATRIX MATRIX SYSTEM USED IN PEDIATRICS: Preferably used matrix are: 1)T-Bands.

2)Toffelmire Matrix. 3)Slik Bands. 4)Segmental Matrix. 5)Omni Matrix. T-BANDS: This matrix band is t shaped and act as a seperater between teeth. It is available in variable materials and thickness and width. E.g brass matrix available in narrow, wide, curved and straight formed.Straight narrow brass for cuspid, primary molars and bicuspid and the wide form for permanent molars. ADVANTAGE: 1)It is economical. 2)Easy to use.
