J.Harmatta PREFACE SincethepublicationofmyStudiesontheHistoryoftheSarmatians(Budapest1950.Pp.63) andmyStudiesintheLanguageoftheIranianTribesinSouthRussia(Budapest1952.Pp.59) twodecadeselapsed.Atthattimebothworkswereprintedinaverylimitednumberofcopies andtheywentshortlyoutofprint.Myresultsandhypothesesregardingthehistoryand languagesoftheSarmatiansarousedkeeninterestinhistorical,archaeologicalandlinguistic researches.Thefollowingreviewsofthetwopublicationsbecameavailabletome:1.on StudiesontheHistoryoftheSarmatiansE.Meyer:MuseumHelveticum8(1951)361,V. Besides,bothworksexertedaconsiderableinfluenceonhistorical,archaeologicaland linguisticresearchesdealingwiththeSarmatians.Myresultsandsuggestionswereoften quoted,adopted,developed,modified,criticizedanddiscussedbothathomeandabroad.Itis easytounderstandthatduringthelastdecadesbothpublicationswereoftenwantedby scholarsstudyingtheIraniantribesofEasternEuropebutnodemandcouldhavebeen satisfied.Therefore,IwillinglyacceptedtheproposalbyProfessorS.SzdeczkyKardossto republishbothmonographsintheActaAntiquaetArchaeologicaeditedbyhim. Examiningthevastliteraturepublishedduringthelasttwodecadesonthesubject,Iwould mostwillinglywriteanewbook,adetailedhistoryoftheSarmatians.Thegreatamountof valuableresultsachievedmainlybySovietarchaeologistswouldmakenowpossibleto elaboratetheproblems,discussedinmybooks,inamoredetailedmannerasbefore.Taking intoconsideration,however,thatbothworksbecamesolidconstituentsofscholarlyresearch sincetwodecadesandconsideringthatmostresearcherslookforthereferencestothem occurringinscientificliterature,Iabandonedtheplanofaradicalrewritingandrestricting myselftominorcorrectionsIleftthetextessentiallyunchanged.InanycaseIaddedsome additionalnotesanda 5
