ME-430 Introduction to Computer Aided Design

HAMMER HANDLE - Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire 2.0

In a system window, create a new directory called ME-430 (e.g. h:\PTC_Working_Dir\ME-430) if this has NOT been done. From File pull down menu, select Set Working Directory. Select Working Directory dialog box appears

Select the ME-430 directory to highlight it and select OK. All files created in this session will be stored in ME430 directory. Note:

You can also create a new directory by selecting .

Pick the Create a new object icon

Type in hammer_handle for the name of the new part. Click OK.

CREATE A BASE FEATURE REVOLVED PROTRUSION


Create the base feature Pick the Revolve Tool icon .

In the dashboard, pick click , then .

Pick Front datum plane as Sketch Plane. For Sketch Orientation Reference pick RIGHT datum plane, and set Orientation to Right. This option is default option! Then click the Sketch button .

Click the Close button in the References dialog box.

Click the small forward > icon to expand,

and pick

Draw a horizontal centerline through coordinate system. This centerline is used as axis of revolution of the revolved section. Use the appropriate Sketcher Tools to create and dimension the section as shown below make sure the section is closed, and use diametrical dimensions for the cylindrical portion of the hammer (see figure below).

and select Standard Click Orientation.

CREATE CHAMFERS

Pick the Chamfer Tool icon Pick the right edge of the handle.

Change the chamfer option to 45 x D. Enter the D value of 0.1795 in.

to finish creating a chamfer.

Repeat the same technique to create two more chamfers as shown below. Chamfer 45 x 0.1795

CREATE A GROOVE
Create the base feature Pick the Revolve Tool icon .

In the dashboard, click the Remove Material icon .

Then pick , followed by clicking .

Pick Front datum plane as Sketch Plane. For Sketch Orientation Reference pick RIGHT datum plane, and set Orientation to Right. This option is default option! Then click the Sketch button .

Pick as additional reference.

Pick as additional reference. Pick the top horizontal and vertical left edges as the reference. Click the Close button in the References dialog box.

The groove will be created using revolved cut. Create the following section, make sure to create the horizontal centerline first, next draw the vertical center line to position the center of the circle, and finally draw the small circle that has a RADIUS equal to 0.035.

CREATE A THREAD 0.5 20 UNF-2A


The form of the thread is shown below.

From Insert pull-down menu, select Helical Sweep -> Cut

Click Done. Pick FRONT as the sketching plane, and select Okay.

Select Top in the SKET VIEW menu, and then pick RIGHT datum plane. Zoom in the portion of the handle that will be threaded.

Pick two additional references as shown.

Pick as additional reference. Close the References dialog box.

Pick as additional reference.

Draw a vertical centerline as axis of helical sweep cut. Draw a 0.47 in. vertical line as profile of the helical sweep on the right edge (reference line).

Enter the pitch value 0.05 in. or 1/20 in.

Create the following section of the thread.

Click Click OK.

KNURLING THE HANDLE


From Insert pull-down menu, select Helical Sweep -> Cut Accept the defaults for Constant -> Thru Axis -> Right Handed, and click Done.

When prompted for a SKETCHING PLANE, click the Datum Plane Tool icon The Datum Plane dialog box appears.

Pick the axis of the handle, and hold-down Ctrl key, and click FRONT datum plane.

Accept Offset Rotation of 45 degrees. Click OK -> Click Okay for the DIRECTION.

Select Bottom, and pick the most right surface of the handle. Pick this flat surface for Bottom orientation.

For the References, pick the axis, bottom edge, and right edge of the handle.

Click Close.

First, draw a centerline as axis of helical sweep cut. Then draw a profile line as shown. Click .

Enter Pitch value of 2.0693 in.

Sketch a equilateral triangle with sides equal to 0.0724 in. Click .

Click Okay for the DIRECTION. Click OK.

Pattern the cut.

Make sure to unhide the datum plane DTM1. Expand the Group AUTO_GROUP, left-click DTM1, right-click DTM1, and select Unhide.

Select the Group AUTO_GROUP from Model Tree, then click the Pattern Tool icon .

Expand the Dimensions tab, and click the 45 angle.

Change the Increment to 30, and enter 12 for the number of pattern cuts.

Select the Pattern in the Model tree, then right-click and select Suppress.

From Insert pull-down menu, select Helical Sweep -> Cut Accept the defaults for Constant -> Thru Axis -> Left Handed, and click Done.

Pattern the cut.

Make sure to unhide the datum plane DTM13. Expand the Group AUTO_GROUP, left-click DTM13, right-click DTM13, and select Unhide.

Select the Group AUTO_GROUP_1 from Model Tree, then click the Pattern Tool icon .

Expand the Dimensions tab, and click the 45 angle.

To unsuppress the previous pattern features, from Edit pull-down menu, select Resume -> All The result is illustrated below.
