Q&A

Networks why?
The primary purpose of all networks is to enable communication

This communication may be needed to:

Monitor the performance of different devices/equipment in a sub-system or a system remotely Control different devices/equipment in a sub-system or system Master/Slave, Redundant Get a holistic view of multiple systems

And so on

Network characteristics
Several ways to characterize a network:
Media topology (bus, star, ring, etc.)

Data transfer protocol (Modbus, TCP/IP, etc.)

Data transfer rate Etc.

Cummins devices typically use two types of network systems

To the outside world (BMS, SCADA)
FTT-10 (LonWorks): Legacy controls Modbus: New controls

Local
PCCNet

Physical Topology For Media

BUS: A linear connection of devices (Daisy-chain)
Easy to install and troubleshoot Single point of failure

RING: A circular architecture with no break in wiring

Reliable Expensive, harder to install, Not always possible

STAR: Devices all connect to a central hub

Easies to install Hub single point of failure

COMBINATION: A mixture of the three above topologies

Flexibility to get lowest cost or highest reliability
5

Most difficult to troubleshoot

Typical SCADA System

SCADA = Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition

FTT-10 Products Configure with LonMaker

Difference between FTT-10 and PCCNet Networks

Networks using old controls require a separate network card and use LonMaker software to configure
PowerCommand 2100*, 3100 and 3201 communicate with a LonWorks interface card
Modlon II gateway converts Lon data to Modbus

The new controls come ready to communicate over Modbus and PCCNet.
PowerCommand 1.X, 2.X and 3.3 have Modbus and PCCNet native to the controls No additional hardware and no configuration work is required.
*PCC2100 does support PCCNet

Modbus RTU (232/485/TCP-IP) to a Customers BMS

Most popular protocol used by Building Management and SCADA systems Different versions of Modbus
RTU and ASCII
We use Modbus RTU

RS485 and RS232 Physical Layers

We use RS485. There are converters available

Modbus is not the same as Modbus+

ModLon II Gateway
Allows Lon devices to communicate over Modbus Single device converts data from multiple gensets and ATSs P/N is 541-1149

Remote Monitoring Solutions

Monitoring programs (Software installed on customers PC)
PowerCommand for Windows (will no longer be supported with new genset controls) PowerCommand Pulse (RFQ only)

Remote monitoring solutions (Web server installed at genset, customer uses internet browser to view web pages. No software installed on customers PC.)
iWatch 100 iWatch Wireless

Making Modbus available on PowerCommand 1.X, 2.X, 3.X makes it easy for customers to remotely monitor with their own system

iWatch 100 vs. iWatch Wireless

Key difference between the two is in the connection
iWatch100 Customer is responsible for establishing and
maintaining an ethernet connection. Could be corporate WAN or internet. iWatch Wireless - Cummins maintains cellular or satellite connection to web server.

Ongoing service
iWatch100 is a one time transaction iWatch Wireless involves an annual fee for service
