The MSPmentor 100 is an annual report from MSPmentor and publisher, Nine Lives Media. Companies are ranked on a range of metrics, including annual recurring revenue (ARR), total devices managed, revenue per employee, growth rates (percentage and dollar gures), and more. All nancial information for non-U.S. MSPs was converted to U.S. dollars to ensure a consistent ranking methodology worldwide. This years MSPmentor 100 report has been expanded to include global and regional lists. SURVEY METHODOLOGY
Nine Lives Media promoted a call for submissions across its web sites (MSPmentor, The VAR Guy, and Talkin Cloud) and social media destinations (FaceBook, LinkedIn and Twitter) from October through December 2011. Results were published February 15, 2012 on MSPmentors web site and during a corresponding webcast. The survey attracted 485 qualied participants. Nine Lives Media disqualied certain participants based on various criteria, including but not limited to (a) incomplete survey submissions (b) lack of nancial data and (c) erroneous information uncovered during fact-checking. This report includes much but not all of the survey data. Some report graphs contained within focus purely on the MSPmentor 100 companies. Other report graphs include data from all 485 qualied participants. Each chart is labeled accordingly. In order to gather reliable nancial data, Nine Lives Media agreed not to disclose specic annual revenue information (i.e., revenue top-line revenues and annual recurring revenues). We reserved the right, however, to publish company growth rates and other statistical information based on the private revenue information.

THE STATE OF THE MANAGED SERVICES MARKET: 10 TRENDS TO WATCH

1. ANNUAL RECURRING REVENUES: Simply put, the managed services market remains healthy.
As a whole, the MSPmentor 100 companies generated $1.04 billion in combined annual recurring revenue (ARR) for 2011, up 28 percent from 2010. 10 of the 100 companies generated at least $20 million in ARR, up from 6 last year. 30 of the 100 companies generated at least $10 million in ARR, up from 28 last year. 65 of the 100 companies generated at least $5 million in ARR, up from 54 last year. Every company generated at least $3 million in ARR. Last years baseline to qualify for the MSPmentor 100 was $2.5 million in ARR.

2. DEVICES MANAGED: Overall, top MSPs continue to rapidly grow their device management
footprints. A few examples: PCs, tablets and smart phones: The top 100 MSPs now manage 2.7 million desktop and mobile devices, up a dramatic 50 percent from 2010. The sharp growth is likely tied to two factors MSPs extended their managed services to support tablets and smart phones. Moreover, two of the top 100 MSPs manage a combined 1.8 million devices. Managed Print Services: This is the rst year the MSPmentor 100 Global Report has tracked the managed print services devices. The top 100 MSPs managed 80,676 printers, up 41 percent from 57,281 printers in 2010. Physical Servers and Network Devices: The top 100 MSPs now manage 1.3 million physical and network devices, up 91 percent from 2010.

3. HEADCOUNT: MSPmentor 100 companies have been in hiring mode, growing their total,
combined headcount to 17,835 employees up 14.8 percent from 2010. 34 of the 100 companies had at least 100 employees. 69 of the 100 companies had at least 50 employees.
4. MANAGED SERVICES OFFERED: Many MSPs continue to offer point-services (patch

management, remote monitoring, etc.) but MSPmentor is closely tracking the so-called Cake approach promoted by TruMethods, an industry coaching organization. The concept is as follows: Instead of promoting a specic price tied to a specic managed service, MSPs should offer all-in pricing to generate better margins with end-customers.

5. CLOUD SERVICES OFFERED: Generally speaking, MSPmentor believes MSPs are leading the
charge into cloud computing, generally staying ahead of traditional VARs and resellers in the cloud market. The reasoning: MSPs already understand how to build and sell recurring revenue services both on-premise and in a hosted world. 7. VERTICAL MARKET FOCUS: Yes indeed, MSPs certainly have vertical market focus areas. And
in many cases, vertical-market MSPs seem to be the most protable, most highly valued MSPs. In 2011, mindSHIFT acquired Alpheon for its health care expertise. And in late 2011, ETG a leading MSP also in the health care vertical respectfully declined takeover offers that valued the company at 10X or more EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) a fairly high valuation.

10. TECHNOLOGY MANAGEMENT PLATFORMS: Generally speaking, MSPs in the SMB market
use RMM (remote monitoring and management) and IT automation software to proactively maintain customer systems (servers, desktops, mobile devices, network infrastructure, etc.). In the midmarket and enterprise, some of the solutions can scale to millions of devices.

11. CLOUD SERVICES PLATFORMS: Leading MSPs have aggressively embraced third-party cloud
platforms for business productivity, storage and security applications (among others). MSPmentor was particularly surprised to see strong adoption of Microsoft Ofce 365 and its predecessor, BPOS, as well as Google Apps. On the one hand, the Microsoft and Google cloud platforms offer a low barrier-to-entry for channel partners. But on the other hand, some channel partners have expressed concern about thin margin opportunities with the mainstream cloud platforms.

CONCLUSIONS:
Overall, top MSPs continue to generate double- and triple-digit growth. We are witnessing MSPs pushing beyond traditional managed services (remote monitoring, help desk, patch management) to promote a range of cloud services. The big market inection point remains pricing, with a growing number of MSPs introducing all-in user-based pricing rather than a la carte point pricing for individual services. The managed services trend has also accelerated in all of the major global markets, achieving critical mass in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia/New Zealand, while gaining momentum in Central and South America, and Africa. Generally speaking, economic concerns in North America have somewhat subsided for MSPs. But MSPmentor continues to watch the European debt situation closely to see if there are any downside risks to MSPs worldwide. MSPmentor also continues to watch for signs of market commoditization involving such areas as basic PC monitoring. Despite those potential market challenges, the managed services industry continues to ourish. MSPs, and their technology partners, continue to integrate multiple point services into complete IT as a Service (ITaaS) portfolios. And the number one focus area protable monthly recurring revenues (MRR) -- continues to pay dividends for MSPs.
