Whats New..Products
Over the last 50 years, Whr has provided over 300,000 parking spaces for projects across Europe, Asia, Australia and America.
From the companys original double-stacking systems, our range has now grown to include Parklift two and three level systems, Combilift semi-automatics, lateral and longitudinal sliding platforms and our state of the art, fully automatic systems. Our ongoing investment in product development has led to a number of recent product launches, including the Parklift 421 three level dependent stacking system and Combilift 553 and 554 semi automatic systems with 3 or 4 levels both feature in this brochure. Also showcased are a number of completed projects which demonstrate the benefits of mechanical parking systems in brownfield developments not least their ability to significantly increase parking densities whilst reducing both construction and landfill costs. For more details about any of the systems, projects or support material, please contact our technical team on 01993 851 791 or visit www.wohr-parking.co.uk.

Project Client Architect Contractor Whr System Unity Street, Bristol Carrot Limited Charter Consultant Architects Urban Construction Management Combilift 551
This residential project has created 49 contemporary apartments in a building originally built in 1865. The developer required an independent parking solution to increase the number of spaces that could be offered to potential buyers. Due to structural constraints, no pits could be excavated but some additional headroom was available. The structural steel grid of the parking system effectively sits behind the large brick pillars in the basement parking area. Utilising a Combilift 551 (2 level) semi automatic system, an additional 24 parking spaces have been provided (only 9 could be created conventionally), making full use of the available space and headroom. Combilifts utilise lateral sliding and vertical stacking technologies.

Avenue Rd, St Johns Wood Wolff Architects Rackham Construction Parklift 461
Working closely with the developer, Whr supplied a fully automatic parking system for this 1858 buildingretaining the existing front faade whilst the internal building structure was completely rebuilt. The solution delivers a completely modern parking solution with 84 spaces provided over 10 levels of parking. The above ground tower system slotted into a narrow gap between buildings. Utilising a very narrow access aisle, the drivethrough system incorporates separate entry and exit garages. Users simply leave and collect their vehicles from a transfer point, with all parking and retrieval carried out automatically by the Parksafe system.
The owners of a private house in central London wanted to increase their parking provision within the property boundariesrather than leaving vehicles on the road. Given the particularly narrow courtyard, a Whr 461 unit was installed; effectively allowing two cars to be parked in the footprint of just a single vehicle. The upper level of the unit may be completed in materials to blend with adjacent landscapingblock paving, grass etc, and can then be parked on.
Other options are available for 2 or 3 levels of parking below ground (Parklift 462 and 463).

In this new waterfront development, site conditions prevented the provision of multi levels of basement parking. A high water table meant that the required depth of excavation would be prohibitive. 3 levels of conventional basement would have been necessary to provide sufficient parkingtaking into consideration the need to provide driving ramps, which would potentially take up important parking area. Whr Parklift 440 vertical stacking systems (2 levels) provide 130 spaces from one basement level. All spaces have independent access, with the clear headroom required above the driving aisle only 3.25m and a pit depth of 1.7m. This solution not only delivers the required number of spaces, but also significantly reduces both the costs of construction and landfill.
Beetham Tower, Birmingham Beetham Organisation Ian Simpson Laing ORourke Multiparker 740
This stunning mixed use development in the heart of Birmingham required a fully automatic solution to provide 55 parking spaces for the owners of apartments situated above the Radisson Hotel. With narrow and limited site access, a Multiparker 740 system with 5 levels of parking below ground was specified, providing 48 spaces for vehicles up to 1.6m and an additional 7 for vehicles up to 2.0m high. A single garage used to enter and exit the system also incorporates a turning device so vehicles are correctly positioned when exiting on to the main street close to the Holloway Circus roundabout. Conventional multi-storey parking solutions would have required at least twice the volume to deliver the same number of parking spaces.

RIBA CPD Online Seminar
Whr has now joined the RIBA CPD Providers Network and launched an Online CPD seminar. Providing a comprehensive introduction to mechanical car parking, the seminar gives an overview of the different system types available and their respective benefits, as well as a general introduction to some key design considerations.
With an increasing need for parking provision to be addressed at the early stages of the design process, the seminar helps identify which particular system is most appropriate for specific projects, outlining key questions that need to be considered. The seminar is available online at www.ribaonlinecpd.com.
