ACTAS P6

INTRODUCTION

1 Introduction
ACTAS P6 is a test system for testing high and medium voltage switchgear equipment. During the course of a test, important electrical and mechanical parameters are determined for the switchgear device connected to the test system and then analysed. ACTAS P6 works as a master/slave system and consists of the test instrument and a standard PC equipped with the ACTAS software for the purposes of operation and evaluation. The two machines are linked via a serial data interface (RS232) or USB. The PC functions as master and controls the test instrument (slave). The test instrument carries out the actions which have been configured and, at the same time, records the reaction of the test object (the device under test) in real time. The PC then reads out the recorded data and subjects it to direct analysis. ACTAS P6 has in total 8 analog measurement inputs and 14 binary measurement inputs for the connection of 2 main contacts chambers per phase and 8 auxiliary contacts. Furthermore the connection of one incremental travel transducer is possible. With the two control outputs for actuator coils a switching operation of the test object is generated. The reaction of the test object is recorded in real time synchronously to control signal output and then evaluated by the PC. ACTAS P6 has been specially developed for harsh transport and environmental conditions. A high level of system integration has made it possible to accommodate the test instrument in a portable 19"housing (3HU). Apart from the ON/OFF switch, no operating elements are located on the test instrument itself. The test system is operated and controlled using the ACTAS software on a standard PC. The ACTAS user manual describes the programme and how to use it, while the present operating instructions describe the test instrument itself, i.e. the "hardware" and how to connect a test object.

GENERAL

ACTAS P6

2 Safety
Please read through these operating instructions carefully before connecting and commissioning your ACTAS P6 test instrument. They contain important safety tips and warnings which must be observed when working with ACTAS P6.

2.1

General
WARNING Warnings are highlighted by this symbol accompanied by the word WARNING in these operating instructions. Warnings are used to indicate potential sources of danger. Improper use can result in dangerous situations for the user or third parties.

CAUTION This symbol accompanied by the word CAUTION is used to advise the user to take especial care. Information about correct operation is highlighted in this way to avoid damage being caused to the test system or to other devices which have been connected to it.

This symbol is used to warn the user of a danger and indicates that it is imperative that the user should read the relevant passage of the operating instructions or user manual.

2.2

Safety tips and warnings

ACTAS P6 should only be operated by people who have received the correct training and who are aware of the dangers of electric shocks and are familiar with the safety measures which must be taken to avoid potential injury. The ACTAS operating programme offers the option of managing a list of users and their respective access rights. This makes it possible to give only selected persons access to specific functions of the test instrument (see the ACTAS User Manual). ACTAS P6 contains no parts which can be serviced by the user. Settings, servicing and repairs requiring the device to be opened may only be carried out by specialist staff who have been authorized to do so. During tests ACTAS P6 carries out switching operations on switchgear equipment. For this reason before carrying out a test step it is important to ensure that no one is within the danger zone close to the moving parts of the test object. When carrying out tests in the open air or inside we recommend that the work area is always cordoned off, that a sufficient safety distance from the test object is observed and that no unauthorized persons enter the work area. Warning: Opening the test instrument can lead to electric shocks. For this reason, the test instrument should never be opened in any circumstances.

ACTAS P6

COMMISSIONING

3 Commissioning
WARNING The test instrument should never be used in a location which is subject to explosion hazards.

3.1

Setting up the test instrument

When the test instrument is brought from a cold environment into a warm one, condensation can result in dangerous situations. For this reason, it is important that earthing instructions are followed exactly.

Figure 1: ACTAS P6

3.2

Connecting the protective earth conductor

Before any leads are connected to the test instrument, the test instrument must be connected to a power supply with a protective earth using the three-core power cable delivered with the test instrument. For this purpose, the power plug must be inserted in a socket outlet with earthing contact. The earth connection should not be interrupted by an extension cord without an earth conductor. If a socket outlet with earthing contact is not available, the test instrument must be connected with the station earth via the separate earthing socket (for 4mm banana connectors). However, for reasons of safety we recommend that the earth connection is always made via the earthing socket even if the power supply is provided via a socket outlet with earthing contact. For more information regarding this matter, consult the chapter titled Further connections on page 18. Warning: Any interruption of the earth connection either inside or outside the test instrument can cause the test instrument to become a source of danger. Deliberate interruption is strictly forbidden!

CONNECTING A TEST OBJECT

ACTAS P6

3.3

Connecting a test object

The device to be tested should only be connected to or disconnected from the test instrument when it is absolutely certain that no test quantities are currently being output. Please take into account the information given below when connecting a test object: The main circuit of the switchgear device must be de-energized and disconnected from the bus bar. In addition, the breaker poles must be closed and safety earths must be inserted on both sides. Later the earth must be removed on one side for the test. During connection the drive unit should be put out of operation by interrupting the power supply, for example. In addition, all drive energy should be discharged in the case of drives with an energy storage mechanism (spring, hydraulic or pneumatic).

Figure 2: Connecting a test object

First attach the travel sensors to the test object. Then connect the measuring leads for measuring main contact status, coil and motor current top the test object. Only use measuring leads which can be firmly fixed to the test object using plug-in contacts or cable lugs. Remove all superfluous measuring leads. The measuring leads used should be as short as possible. In particular when connecting the operating coils and the measuring loop for the motor current measurement it is important to check the correct dimensioning of the conductor cross-sections. CAUTION For reasons of safety, only cables with safety banana connectors should be used. The measuring leads must be fully insulated. During tests, voltages of several hundred volts are sometimes available at the measurement inputs and control outputs sockets.

ACTAS P6

COMMISSIONING

3.4

Operating the test instrument

When commissioning an ACTAS P6 test instrument, the following steps should be carried out: Connect the test instrument to the operating PC via the serial interface or USB. To do so, use the 9-pole data cable provided or a USB data cable. To minimise the danger of picking up unwanted electrical signals never use a cable which is longer than the one provided. Make sure that the connection cable is not situated in close proximity to leads carrying signals with a high interference potential (high currents, voltages and/or frequencies). If the test instrument is equipped with an opto-electronic interface (optical fibre) connect the PC and test instrument with the fibre-optics cable. Use the converter provided to connect the fibre-optics cable to the serial interface of the PC. Make sure that the main POWER switch is in the OFF position ("0"). Connect ACTAS P6 to the supply voltage (auxiliary DC voltage or AC voltage from the station battery or mains voltage). To do so, use the power cable with earthing contact provided. First insert it into the inlet socket on the test system and then connect the cable to the supply. Switch the test instrument on using the main POWER switch. The system then "starts up". Various internal initialisation routines are run through first. After approximately 20 seconds, initialisation is complete and the test instrument is ready for operation. Start the ACTAS test software. The software independently establishes a connection with the ACTAS P6 via the interface. In order to achieve the very highest possible degree of accuracy, it is advisable to observe a warm-up period of approximately 30 minutes before carrying out the first test. The warm-up phase lasts longer if the test instrument has been subjected to extreme temperature fluctuations (e.g. after being transported in a car).

MEASUREMENT AND CONTROL CONNECTIONS

ACTAS P6

4 Connections and interfaces

All the connections required for linking the test object to the test instrument are located on the front panel. Connections are made via 4mm safety banana sockets or multi-contact socket-contacts.

Figure 3: Schematic representation of the arrangement of all the connections on the front panel

The individual in- and outputs are arranged in logical groups which are indicated by their position and surrounding frames. The three phases are identified by the use of the letters A, B and C. Letters are not used for signals which are measured phase-independently. Consult the chapter titled Technical on page 23 for detailed information on the entire test system. The technical data included in this chapter is intended to provide an overview only.

4.1

Measurement and control connections

The following connections are located on the front panel: Binary measurement inputs for main and resistive contacts Binary measurement inputs for auxiliary contacts Analog measurement inputs for external sensors Outputs for controlling the operating coils with integrated current measurement Analog measurement input for motor current Multi-contact socket for control and measurement using DMO 1000 or SMO 100 RS 232 and USB communications sockets Voltage output for supplying the auxiliary contacts U AUX

4.1.1

Measurement input for station battery voltage

The station battery voltage can be measured and monitored using the UB measuring input. This input is a universal input which can measure voltages up to 300 V AC. Monitoring the station battery voltage gives an insight into the condition of the station control voltage and its cabling. The measuring input UB can also be used for monitoring of the motor voltage.

ACTAS P6

CONNECTIONS AND INTERFACES

11

4.1.2

Electronic control outputs

ACTAS P6 has electronic control outputs (IGBTs) for controlling the coil circuits which can be used to operate both d.c. and a.c. voltage coils. One opening and closing coil can be controlled (single phase). The electronic control outputs are able to achieve a much higher degree of accuracy than would be possible with conventional relay outputs. The closing and opening delay of the electronic outputs amounts to just one microsecond. All switching outputs are galvanically isolated from one another and are equipped with combined overload/shortcircuit protection which switches off the output for load currents over 30A or if the switching command is applied for too long (typically >1000 ms). The overload protection is self-resetting, so there is no need to replace any fuses or the like after an operation.

The coil operating currents are measured using shunts (resistors) integrated in the test instrument. The currents in the opening and closing circuit are galvanically isolated for each phase but are measured on a common analog channel. It is therefore possible to supply the close and open circuit with electricity from different electrical circuits.

Figure 4: Connection of the control output to the plus or ground branch of the operating coil.

If the opening and closing coils are supplied with electricity by the same voltage source the common plus or ground lead on the ACTAS P6 can be jumpered, depending on the way it is connected. If the control output can be connected to the plus pole or earth, then earth connection should be given preference.

MEASUREMENT AND CONTROL CONNECTIONS

ACTAS P6

4.1.3

Binary main contact measurement inputs The ACTAS P6 can determine the status and operating times
of two switching contacts per phase. For this purpose 6 binary measurement inputs are located on the connection panel in three phase-specific groups labelled Main Contact IN. The measurement inputs for the measurement of the main contact status are tristate inputs. The resistance in the measuring loop is measured via the measurement input. ACTAS P6 uses comparators to identify whether the main contact only is closed or also a resistive contact switched in parallel. Depending on the loop resistance R, the operating points are defined as follows:

R < 30 30 < R < 30 k R > 30 k

Main and resistive contact closed Resistive contact closed Main and resistive contact open

Internally the signals for main and resistance contact are carried on two different binary inputs of the ACTASP6. This means that both signals are available separately and can also be displayed and evaluated separately. The signal voltage (12 VDC) for measuring the main contact states is provided by ACTAS P6.

Figure 5: Two main contact inputs are supplied by one galvanically isolated source.

Galvanic isolation of the signal voltages is necessary as the main circuits in the switchgear device are switched in series and cannot be separated. As all the measuring signals of the ACTAS test system are assigned in the software it is possible to utilize unused main contact inputs for the measurement of auxiliary contacts if the number of auxiliary contact inputs offered by the test instrument is insufficient. Warning: Connecting wet signals to the main contact inputs can lead to the destruction of the input circuits. The main contacts are usually connected directly to the switchgear device by means of single pole measuring leads with crocodile clips. For tests the earth conductor must be removed on one side of the switchgear device. Two-pole earthing would lead to the main contact status being permanently evaluated as closed providing the total resistance of the earth loop did not exceed 30 .

ACTAS P6

CONNECTIONS AND INTERFACES

13

Figure 6: Connection of a main contact with two arcing chambers

Caution: In the case of in-plant tests, the earth connection should always remain in place on the side on which there is the greatest danger of capacitively or inductively coupled voltages (e.g. from bus bars running in parallel and currently in operation). It is imperative to ensure that the switchgear device to be tested is earthed on both sides when the measuring leads are being attached to avoid danger to personnel from capacitively or inductively coupled voltages from neighbouring lines.

4.1.4

Auxiliary contact measurement inputs

Switchgear devices are usually equipped with a package of auxiliary contacts which can be used for various purposes. For instance, in many cases the CLOSE command is carried by a normally closed contact and the OPEN command is carried by a normally open contact of the auxiliary contact package. This ensures that a close command can only take effect if the breaker is open and an opening command can only take effect if the breaker is closed. At the same time the command is interrupted via the auxiliary contact as soon as the switchgear device has reached the desired position. The operating coils are protected from overload in this way. Auxiliary contacts are also used for signalling in remote-control installations or plants with integrated substation control and protection and for the evaluation of breaker positions in protection practice. A distinction is made between normally closed, normally open (see above) and wiper contact elements. The latter emit a pulse of a defined length during moving contact travel, e.g. for the generation of a breaker tripping signal. In addition, switchgear devices also often have auxiliary contacts with ON or OFF delay.

14

MEASUREMENT AND CONTROL CONNECTIONS

ACTAS P6

Figure 7: Connection of the auxiliary contacts, wet and dry

The ACTAS P6 hardware makes no basic distinction between the different ways the auxiliary contacts function. The different functions (normally closed, normally open or wiper contact elements) are defined in the software and evaluated correspondingly. The function of the auxiliary contacts must be checked as regards operability, operating time and synchronicity to the main contact. ACTAS P6 features a total of 8 special measurement inputs for this purpose, divided into 2 groups, each having common ground. All measurement inputs are potential-free universal inputs with an input signal range of 24 to 300 VDC. The signal voltage must be provided by the plant or test object. If the switchgear device only has dry (potential-free) auxiliary contacts the signal voltage can also be provided by ACTAS P6 through the built-in auxiliary voltage source (UAUX) with 24 VDC. The signal voltage is fed to the auxiliary contacts via bridges to the contact inputs or to the auxiliary contact package of the switchgear device. Caution: It is important to note that each group of 4 auxiliary contact inputs (IN 1/2/3/4 and IN 5/6/7/8) have a common ground. If the signal voltages of the binary signals which are to be measured are to be supplied by two different galvanically isolated sources, the measurement signals must correspondingly be allocated to different isolated input groups to avoid compensating currents and resultant damage to the sources or the test instrument.

4.1.5

Spring-tensioning motor

ACTAS P6 offers the option of measuring and evaluating the operating current of the drive motors. For measuring the motor current ACTAS P6 features an measurement input with an integral shunt (resistor) which is designed for a current intensity of 40 AACeff. In order to measure the operating current, the electricity supply to the motor M must go via this shunt.

Figure 8: Connection of a spring tensioning motor

Note that the ACTAS P6 test instrument does not actively control the release of the motor. As far as the measurement of the motor current is concerned this means that the drive must be operated directly or via a switching operation. The motor voltage can be recorded simultaneously to the motor current via the measurement input UB. Depending on the design and wiring of the drive, the motor is operated using the same voltage source as the operating coils so there is no need to rewire the measurement input UB. If the drive motor is fed by an AC voltage network or a separate battery, the measurement input UB has to be connected to this voltage. To cover all eventualities both the measurement input for the motor voltage and the measurement input for motor current are designed as AC inputs. As ACTAS P6 only has one measurement input for the motor current, the motor current test for breakers with a single-pole drive must be carried out pole by pole. This means that for a full test of all three drives, three records must be made. If the motor loaded mechanism is controlled sequentially then the measurement of the motor current of all tensioning motors can be carried out in a single measurement. For further information regarding this matter, consult the ACTAS User Manual.

4.1.6

Inputs for external sensors

ACTAS P6 has one measuring input for analogue travel transducers, with a standard measuting range of 0 to 10 V DC for various purposes. In addition ACTAS P6 also has one digital measurement input for incremental travel transducers. Furthermore ACTAS P6 has one input for incremental transducers. These digital measurement inputs have a signal voltage of 5 VDC or 24 VDC. Principally these inputs are provided for measuring the main contact travel on the contact itself or on the drive. However, the inputs can also be used for force or pressure measurements, for example. Main contact travel is usually measured using potentiometric angle or travel sensors with the universal measurement inputs, or digital travel sensors with the digital measurement inputs. A voltage value or digital value (RS 422 protocol) proportional to the current slider position is supplied to the test instrument. ACTAS P6 has a stabilized reference voltage of 10 VDC to supply these potentiometers.

16

MEASUREMENT AND CONTROL CONNECTIONS

ACTAS P6

Figure 9: Connection of an analog travel transducer

Figure 10: Connection of an incremental travel transducer

In order to also be able to measure active analog sensor signals or analog sensor signals supplied from a separate voltage source, the ground points of the measurement input and reference voltage are separate in ACTAS P6. Warning: When connecting the travel sensor avoid a long-lasting short-circuit of the reference voltage as this could lead to the destruction of the internal voltage source.

Additional analogue inputs

ACTAS P6 offers two further analogue inputs for the connection of a current clamp (CC IN) and an universal input (Aux IN) which can be used for the connection of an additional pressure transducer signal. The input Aux IN is designed as the input TRV IN as 10 V signal and the input CC IN as 2 V signal.

FURTHER CONNECTIONS

ACTAS P6

4.2

Further connections
4.2.1 Connection to power supply
The test instrument is supplied with electricity via the power socket using the cable for non-heating appliances provided.

Warning: The power cable provided has one earth continuity conductor. If the connection is made correctly, the housing of the test instrument is connected with the earth continuity conductor of the two-pole-and-earth socket-outlet via the earth continuity conductor of the power cable. Incorrect connection (for example, if non-earthed socket-outlets are used) can cause death or injury from electric shock! For reasons of safety the test instrument should always be connected with the station earth via the separate earth socket.

CAUTION A wide-range power supply unit is standard for the test instruments of the ACTAS range. This power supply unit is designed to be operated with AC or DC voltage (station battery) across a wide range. However, before connecting the test instrument to the power supply it is still important to check that the level and frequency of the power supply voltage lie within the range specified on the rating plate. The test instrument may only be operated within the power supply voltage range detailed on the rating plate. Operating the test instrument with an incorrect power supply voltage may damage the test instrument and leads to loss of the guarantee.

4.2.2

Earthing socket
ACTAS P6 features an earthing socket which can earth all internal components and modules centrally. Because of the danger of accidental energization and inductively or capacitively coupled voltages, it is very strongly recommended that the test instrument always be connected to the station earth via this socket.

Warning: No liability can be accepted by KoCoS for damage resulting from a non-existent earth connection.

ACTAS P6

CONNECTIONS AND INTERFACES

19

4.2.3

Serial interface or USB interface

The RS-232 serial connection of the test instrument is linked to the serial connection of the operating PC via a 1:1 cable (ACTAS P6: DB-9-connector; PC: DB-9-socket). Do not use a null modem cable with reversed transmitter/receiver lines!

Figure 9: Serial port, 9-pole, SUB-D

The test instrument can also be connected to the operating PC via a USB data cable.

4.2.4

DMO control connection

For the static or dynamic determination of the main contact resistance the ACTAS P6 can be connected with an additional external test module via the test connection. The resistance measurement is always single phase. During a test with the DMO 1000, a DC current of approx. 1000 A with an electromotive force of max. 6 V is applied to the main contact and both the current and the voltage drop across the main contact are recorded during a special CLOSE-OPEN switching operation. The ACTAS test software then automatically calculates a dynamic resistance curve from the recorded data. Assignment Pin Polarity Color of connection cable Art. 6305 1 Shielding 2
