EXAMINER : CAPT. SOLANKI DATE : 21-APR-2011 1. BUOYS IDENTIFICATION, CHARA & LIGHTS? 2. RANGE OF SOUND SIGNALS FOR A VESSEL OF LENGTH 200M 3. SITUATION R.V. 1 VESSEL ON PORT 1 VESSEL ON STBD, BOTH FORD OF BEAM, RISK OF COLLISION EXIST WITH BOTH- ACTION ? ( U SHOULD A/C TO STBD- IF U SAY STOP ENGINE S HE WILL SAY IT IS NOT A PSOITIVE ACTION) 4. ALSO U WILL HAVE TO SAY AS PER WHAT RULE IN CASE OF EACH TARGET? 5. SITUATION RAM CROSSING FROM PORT? ( U SHOULD A/C TO PORT AND PASS ASTERN OF RAM IF U SAY U WILL A/C TO STBD TAKE ROUND TURN AND PASS ASTERN, HE WILL SAY IT IS NOT A POSITIVE ACTION) 6. ALSO HE WILL ASK AS PER WHAT RULE IT IS? ALSO HE WILL ASK WHETHER RULE 17C C ONTRADICT THIS? 7. SITUATION R.V. U ARE OVERTAKING ANOTHER VESSEL- IF U SAY U WILL A/C TO STBD AND OVERTAKE HER, HE WILL PUT A ISOLATED DANGER MARK ON STBD, THEN U SHOULD SAY U WILL A/C TO PORT AND OVERTAKE HER- THEN HE WILL ASK ASPER WHICH RULE- THEN YOU HAVET TO QUOTE RULE 19 D(1) 8. MAGNETIC COMPASS CORRECTION? 9. GYRO FAILURE IN SINGAPORE STRAIT? HE WANTS TO HEAR APART FROM ALL GENERAL TH INGS- YOU WILL PUT YOOR RADAR ON HEAD UP MODE

Function 1 As a C/O how will you explain Restricted Visibility to your cadets? - Quote from rule 3. Ship intends to go from UK to Canada. How will you monitor weather along you voy age? - He wants to hear 'Weather Facsimile' Youre C/O ta ing to bosun during your morning watch. Open sea no traffic. Autopil ot fails. Action? - Put on hand steering and Inform Master (very important to eep master posted) _ I would have chec ed the magnetic compass course when I ta e over also when c ourse is altered. Will as Bosun to steer the course. - Inform E/R you need someone down cause might have to reduce speed Master says he will be up in sometime. Hand steering fails. Action? - Use NFU and inform master. - Maintaining course using NFU is difficult might have to reduce speed if requi red even in open water. NFU fails? Action? - Inform master switch to Emergency steering. - Reduce speed. What all communication modes available from bridge to steering gear room? - Wal ie tal ie - Telephone - Sound powered telephone

Examiner Capt Karthic Date 26th April 2011

How often should the gyro repeater near the emergency steering gear be tested? - Before Arrival and departure while doing control test - Also while doing emergency steering gear test. Situation. TSS. How will you cross a lane and enter another? - Had to draw and explain ROR rule. (Cross at right angel and join small an ang le to the general flow) In TRS which is the dangerous navigable semi circle? - Stbd side of the semi circle (show in diagram) Your vessel is in "Navigable" semi circle. Action? - Keep the wind to Stbd Quarter and you will clear the TRS quic ly. Situation. TSS. Your intention to cross TSS. Another vessel crossing whos respon sibility to eep clear? And by which rule? _ My responsibility. Rule 10. (He said Even if ris of collision exist vessel i ntending to cross the TSS responsibility to eep clear and crossing situation do esn't apply here) I gave wrong answer. Cause as far as I remember only Fishing vessels, Sailing v essels and vessel less than 20m shouldn't impede the passage of a vessel followi ng the TSS) Anyway I didn't argue I just said o . ;) Same situation ris of collision exists. Action? - Two possible actions. (Alter course to Stbd and pass astern or reduce speed ne ver alter to port because rule 15 doesn't apply but rule 17 applies) What is inshore traffic zone? Which vessels can enter ITZ? - Designated area between the landward boundary of a TSS and the adjacent coast . _ Vessel en route to or from port, off shore installations or structure, Pilot station, for crew change, bun ering operations, to pic up stores and few more a nd of course to avoid collision/immediate danger. Vessel at anchor. Thic fog. Gyro and Radar not wor ing. How will you now ship is dragging? _ told him send men forward to chec for the sound and stuff he was not happy. - His answer. Use lead line or something similar to that and drop in water if i t stays up and down or if the slap points aft youre safe. If the slap points fwd you might be dragging anchor. I wanted to as him the same because same could have happen cause of tide. But s eemed li e he was going to give me the function so I just said o ;) Vessel at sea partly clouded and at night without loo ing at the compass or ROT how will you now ship is maintaining course? - Switch on steering light. With respect to the clouds or stars see if she is s winging. - See the wa e of the vessel (he was happy with the second answer) Vessel entering port. Master on bridge tal ing to pilot. Youre C/O on bridge. Act ion? - Assist master with navigation. By plotting positions. He was not happy. - Monitor the execution/ Follow up of each command given. If engine movement is given chec if increase/decrease in rpm. If rudder is given chec if AB is givi ng the right order on the right side. Chec the rudder indicator, see if vessel is swinging. (He wanted the second answer) Third has just joined from Kodamba am, Chennai. Same street as yours. Your mom

and his mom are friends. You now him well. He is li e a friend to you. He wants you to assist in navigation just to clear some traffic. Master is already on the bridge. Was helping him but he is on a call now tal in g to chatterers (but still very much on bridge). Action? - Inform master immediately. Masters clear instruction to call him when traffic causes concern or if you cant maintain her on course. Master as s you to loo after. Action? - Access the situation quic ly and ta e over and mention it in the log boo . Im portant to log it down with the word As per Masters Orders C/O too over from 3/O on... at questions as ed by Capt. Karthi on 23rd March., Navigation ( FUNC 1 ): 1) thats the equipment on bridge that wor s on almost same principle as NBDP, wh ats NBDP. 2) Diff between DGPS and GPS 3) Diff Between VRS and VTS 4) some cards., which were very simple. he drew himself.
