CRUDE OIL WASHING COURSE

(Conducted on Full Mission Liquid Cargo Handling Simulator)
1. Aims: The Crude Oil Washing Course is designed to comply with the training provisions contained in Appendix II of the Revised Specifications for the Design, Operation and Control of Crude Oil Washing Systems, IMO Assembly Resolution A.446 (XI), as amended and Table A-V/1-1-2 of STCW -78 / 95 as amended upto 2010. 2. Objectives: The trainee who successfully completes this course will have gained knowledge in various aspects of Crude Oil Washing (COW) operations and will make a more effective contribution to the safety of the tanker Operations. Trainees will gain understanding of: 1. Physical behavior of various types of Crude Oil. 2. Cloud Point Temperature and predicted extent of precipitated sludge from Crude Oil. 3. MARPOL Regulations and commercial implications. 4. The Crude Oil Washing of sludge and some practical implications. 5. COW Equipments and procedures. 6. Crude Oil Washing of Sludge. 7. Effective response to emergencies during the operation. 3. MINIMUM QUALIFICATION & ELIGIBILITY OF STUDENTS The trainee should be in possession of: Second Mate (F. G.) Certificate of Competency or NCV Certificate of Competency or equivalent OR MEO Class 4 Certificate of Competency In addition, has completed Specialized Training Programme on Oil Tanker Operations. 6. Simulator Infrastructure:
Full Mission Liquid Cargo Handling Simulator- OIL The course is conducted on Full Mission LPG Cargo Handling Simulator designed by ARI India. The simulator is type-approved by DNV. The simulator conform to the requirements of STCW 95 Regulation I/12 (use of simulators), Section A - I/12 Part 2 "Performance Standards for the simulator and Simulator Training Objectives" and section B - I/12, 37, 38, 39 (guidance regarding the use of simulators). Also capable of being used for training and demonstrating competence for Masters and Mates on ships as per STCW 95 A-II/2, as amended upto 2010. SIMULATOR SPECIFICATIONS Full - Mission high fidelity simulator consisting of one or more stations having a mock-up of a ship's Cargo System as listed below, as well as a Cargo Control Room (CCR) for AFRAMAX Crude Oil Tanker. Equipment and consoles installed / mounted and arranged in a ship-like manner. A separate instructor room fitted with equipment necessary to monitor effectively the activities in the CCR, Deck Console room and Student Station. Each piece of equipment installed in the simulator have a similar functionality to corresponding equipment used on board ships. The simulation model is able to replicate the dynamic behavior of the cargo in the handling systems and its parameters. Each piece of equipment resembles the behavioral characteristics e.g. accuracy in simulation time and other limitations, related to corresponding equipment in use on board ships. User manuals for the simulator equipment and operational controls available to the learners, for use during exercises. SHIP TYPE AND CAPABILITY 1. The simulator includes mathematical model of a AFRAMAX Crude Oil Tanker. The model resembles accurately the behavioral characteristics of an actual AFRAMAX Crude Oil Tanker, and realistically simulates the components, their processes and control systems as per the hydrostatic conditions of the ship. 2. The simulated ship model is able to load, carry and discharge Oil cargoes. The vessel has 8 Cargo tanks and is able to handle 3 different shore connections at a time. 3. The simulator is able to simulate all Cargo handling operations. These include inerting, loading, unloading with/ without Vapour return, Crude Oil Washing, Tank Cleaning, Discharge through ODMCS and also stress calculations, trim and stability planning and monitoring on line (during the running of the exercise) and Offline (when planning the cargo handling operation).
