Cloud Definition

In the world of marketing, the term Cloud Computing is tossed around as an all-encompassing term for grid and/or utility computing. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) provides a more concise and specific definition:

Cloud computing is a model for enabling convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction.

Cloud Service Hype

There has been a lot of hype around Cloud Computing over the past years but cloud computing is here
Forrester predicts cloud spending will grow from $40 billion to $241 billion in the global IT market over the next 10 years. IDC foresees cloud spending to top $36 billion next year, which is four-times the overall IT industry rate of growth. Gartner says cloud-related spending is growing four times faster than IT spending, and will reach $89 billion this year. Based on the forecasts and global IT spend, cloud represents roughly 6.6% of overall IT spending - Globally.

Cloud Service Hype: Gartner Hype-Cycle Curve

Gartner publishes the IT HypeCycle curve yearly to visual representations of where innovations stand on a predictable path to market acceptance.

This year, Gartner issued a new Hype-Cycle curve dedicated to cloud related technologies showing the industry is just beyond the Peak of Inflated Expectations, and headed for the Trough of Disillusionment.

Cloud Service Delivery Models

Cloud Computing Service Delivery models:
Software as a Service (SaaS): Software deployment model whereby a provider licenses an application to customers for use as a service on demand Platform as a service (PaaS): Delivery of computing platform & solution stack as a service Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS): Delivery of computer infrastructure (typically a platform virtualization environment) as a service

Bringing the Cloud Together

Characteristics:

On-demand self-service: individuals can set themselves up without needing anyones help; Ubiquitous network access: available through standard Internet-enabled devices; Location independent resource pooling: processing and storage demands are balanced across a common infrastructure with no particular resource assigned to any individual user; Rapid elasticity: consumers can increase or decrease capacity at will; Pay per use: consumers are charged fees based on their usage of a combination of computing power, bandwidth use and/or storage

Service Deliver model Deployment model

From Kate Craig-Wood 2010

Deployment Models
Private Cloud (internal cloud or on-premise cloud): a private cloud intentionally limits access to its resources to service consumers that belong to the same organization that owns the cloud Public Cloud (external cloud or multi-tenant cloud): a public cloud represents a cloud environment that is openly accessible. Hybrid Cloud: hybrid cloud represents a composition of at least one private cloud and at least one public cloud Community Cloud: a community cloud represents sharing of computing infrastructure in between organizations of the same community.

According to ABI Research, these are influencing cloud migration: The growing adoption of data center architectures and virtualization technologies. The need to integrate multiple applications to deliver the connected experience to users across different devices, including smartphones and media tablets. The promise of lower costs and increased efficiencies from standardized platforms and processes in the cloud.

Value Proposition

Predictable IT expenditures: Subscription-based service with published schedule;. reduced non-budgeted related projects to resolve issues Total Cost of Owner (TCO): No hardware and software procurement, annual maintenance and support, and upgrades; subscribe only to what is required for your business from a license and device perspective; eliminates certain positions within IT required to support on-premise solutions Support and Expertise: 7x24x365 support with dedicated knowledgeable resources; operational excellence for hosted solution; shift in-depth knowledge/skillset from internal resources to provide. Implementation: No hardware, software, and/or contracts to negotiate or purchase; customization is typically limited reducing expenses for third-party consulting On-demand Scalability: As the business grows, the solution can scale accordingly with no additional CAPEX investment. Infrastructure: Beyond network requirements, hardware platforms and associated support systems are eliminated.
