DDP-1

The DDP-1 chassis is an interface point

placed between a digital cross-connect
system (DCS) and digital network
elements (NE), providing a flexible
alternative to hard wiring NEs directly
to the DCS.
A digital distribution point provides cable
termination and circuit access to digital
circuits at the DS1, DS1C, E1 and VT1.5
signal levels. Software cross-connects
between two NEs are provided by the DCS.

Features and Benefits

Centralized termination, interconnection and access to digital circuits between the 3/1 DCS and
network elements

An alternative to hard wiring the digital telecommunications equipment directly to the 3/1 DCS
backplane

Smooth, flexible and economical migration of service to a 3/1 DCS in an office

In-service or out-of-service cutover options using DDP-1

Catastrophic access options utilizing the optional jack card (monitoring in both directions from one
location and patching options)

Ease of adding or removing future network elements

Improved cable management and additional cabling flexibility as the office grows

DDP-1

The DDP-1 is an interconnect point between a NE and a DCS port. When the DCS is installed, all circuit
ports are cabled to the DDP. Periodically, when NEs are added, they are cabled to the DDP instead of wiring
to the active DCS backplane. Moving this routine cabling away from the DCS backplane reduces service outages of active circuits due to installation activities. The DDP-1 is an extension of the fragile DCS backplane
and provides a robust distribution frame for wiring of NEs as the telecommunications network evolves.
In addition to the basic application of an interface point between the DCS and NE, the DDP-1 may be used
as a termination and access point between dedicated NEs where cross-connect flexibility is not required,
such as in outside plant cabinets, huts, CEVs and on customer premises. If cross-connect flexibility is desired,
then a DSX-1 may be a more appropriate product.
Circuit access is provided by modular access cards that need only be plugged into a DDP-1 chassis when
access is desired. Access cards provide industry standard Bantam jacks (MONITOR, OUT and IN jacks) for
convenient monitoring, testing and patching capabilities. Patching into the OUT and IN jacks breaks the connection between the DCS and NE and extends the signal to a patch cord for testing and patching. The
MONITOR jack is a high impedance bridge point that is used for nonintrusive monitoring of active circuits.
DDP-1 chassis are typically grouped together in a common area to concentrate installation and maintenance
activities and allow for patching between any access point.
During normal circuit operation, the access cards are not in line with the circuit. The DDP-1 chassis includes
make-before-break loop-through connectors that interconnect a NE to a DCS port. When access is desired,
the access card is inserted into the chassis where the loop-through connection is then extended through the
access card.

DDP-1 Chassis
Description

DDP-1 Digital Distribution Products

The DDP-1 chassis is available in two basic configurations: Single Access and Dual Access.
Various circuit densities are available to match DCS group quantities (i.e. 56, 64, 84 circuit). Various wiring
connection styles (i.e. wire-wrap, 50-pin or 64-pin connectors) and equipment rack styles (i.e. 19", 23"
mounting) are available.

The Single Access chassis allows access to the NE

side or the DCS side but not simultaneously. An
access card is inserted in the normal position (with
monitor jack on top) to access the NE. The access
card is inserted in the inverted position (monitor
jack on bottom) to access the DCS.

The Dual Access chassis allows access to both the

NE side and the DCS side simultaneously. Two
access cards are inserted in the normal position
(with monitor jack on top). One access card is
inserted into the top half of the chassis for the NE,
and another access card is inserted into the bottom
half of the chassis for the DCS. Full bidirectional
access is accommodated with the dual access chassis.

DDP-1 Bays

DDP-1 Digital Distribution Products

Rack Assembly Guidelines

The recommended bay layout consists of 16 chassis. Each chassis contains 56 or 64 circuits depending on
the type of DCS machine being interfaced. This rack configuration of 16 chassis provides an interface for
896 circuits using the 56 circuit chassis or 1024 circuits using the 64 circuit chassis. The chassis are mounted
in groups of four to match numerically to each DCS module of 224 or 256 circuits. Although there is physical mounting space for more chassis, the rack is limited to these maximums for the following reasons:
10" spacing between racks has a maximum cable capacity for up to 1024 circuits using either 600-type
(22 gauge) or 1249-type (26 gauge) shielded cable.
Often a configuration of 16 chassis corresponds numerically to the number of DS1 circuits in many DCS
machines. Example: 16 chassis x 56 circuits per chassis = 896 circuits per rack.
The unused mounting spaces in the rack can be used for maintenance equipment such as a
miscellaneous jackfield (fault location lines, order wire access, T1 maintenance lines, etc.),
communication panel, fuse panel and customer provided test equipment. A fuse panel is not required
for DDP-1, but is required if a communication panel or test equipment is placed in the DDP-1 rack.
The unused mounting spaces in the rack also provide room for future DDP-1 chassis when rolling over to
a new DCS machine. DS1 ports from the new DCS can be terminated on the new chassis, then transfer
the NE cables as they are cut into the new DCS.

Rack and Hardware Guidelines

Aisle spacing conforms to existing practices of 3'0" front aisle and 2'6" rear aisle spacing. This allows room
for technicians to perform routine maintenance activities at the front of racks and for cable termination at
the rear of racks.
Unequal flange-type racks are recommended because they provide efficient cable management for routing
cables into the rack. When two racks are placed next to each other, the wide front flanges form a cable
duct area between the racks. This duct area provides a cable management route for running cables vertically within the rack. Adding a rack filler panel between the racks increases the cable duct area. For a full rack
of DDP-1 (16 single access chassis), the recommended size of the filler panel is 10" between racks and 5"
at the ends of rack lineups. This spacing provides sufficient room to add and remove cables as the network
elements (NE) and digital cross-connect system change (DCS).

ADC recommends placing the DDP-1 in a 7' environment to allow technicians to access circuits without the
need for ladders. When DDP-1 is installed in environments higher than 7', the chassis should be placed
only up to the 7' level. This recommendation follows existing practices for access to DSX jacks.

DDP-1 Bays
Guard boxes (included as part of the rack) provide a bumper at the base of the rack to prevent mobile
equipment from hitting equipment chassis installed in the rack. The recommended unequal flange type
rack is equipped with 5" rear and 2" front guard boxes. The DDP-1 chassis will fit within a 12" rack footprint. A/C outlets may be placed on the guard boxes and are recommended for convenience on every
third or fourth rack.
Recommended end guards are placed at the ends of rack lineups to protect cables routed in the duct
area. They also provide a location for bay alarm indicators and A/C light switches.
The recommended rack installation kit provides hardware to anchor the rack to the floor and support the
top of the rack to superstructure above. Also included in the kit are cable tie brackets that attach to the
sides of the rack in the duct area to provide a means to secure the DCS cables within the duct area.
Twelve NE cable tie brackets attach to the rear of the rack's wide front flange. These brackets provide a
means to secure the NE cables in the same duct area and separate them from the DCS cables. The segregation between NE and DCS cable allows for efficient cable management as cables are added and
removed in the future. A three bay lineup with racks, filler panels, and end guards is shown below.

Three Conductor Patch Cords

Bantam patch cords are plastic jacketed,
shielded cords with molded-on plugs. The
plugs are made with molded insulation
between conductors. Bantam patch cords
are available with single and dual three conductor plugs. A cord strain relief feature is
included in the plug construction. Dual
twisted pair patch cords are recommended
for protection against cross talk, especially
during switch cutovers and when patch
cords over 12' are used.
