PROJECT -1: COMMUNITY LIBRARY FOR THE DIGITAL AGE

Studio objective: To get students introduced to complex building problem, dealing with public function at an increased scale. The core objective of the studio is to facilitate students to generate innovative concept and idea for projects and to develop skill to architecturally manipulate formal and functional expressions. and also to familiarize students with the technicalities of structure and building services. Project brief: Libraries are vital social facility and institutions. They play a major role in shaping up a society by providing information and knowledge. A library irrespective of its scale must serve all the age group of its catchment area. the functioning and the role of a library as we know it today is quite familiar to us but the objective of the project is to rethink about the new potential and possibility of a community library in the digital age of communication where electronic transfer and storage of data has opened up new avenues to explore The students are asked to critically think and formulate ideas regarding three things1.In a conventional library with book stacks and reading area, will there be any change in the functioning and spatial configuration to accommodate the digital library. 2. how will the library evolve as a social and communal facility to reach the mass in terms of its space planning and formal appearance 3.what should be the spatial attributes of a digital library and how it can be used to serve the neighborhood and community Project objective: the project aims to: 1. in the part -1 of the exercise students will develop and understand the purpose and function of a library both conventional and digital . As well as they will formulate an idea / concept keeping in mind the site consideration. 2. in the part -2 of the exercise students will gather specific data for a project. And will generate intuitive idea and concept for that project which will eventually culminate into a scheme. After that the students will develop the scheme into a basic architectural design. 3. in the part -3 of the exercise students will develop the scheme into a detail architectural design comprising structure fenestration , indoor outdoor spaces

Project requirement: the community library shall have to serve a catchment area with an estimated population of 5000. Major user group of the library will be teenagers and young adults but there must be collection for readers of all age groups. Major functional requirements are1. space for book collection (stack area)* 2. reading area* 3. staff work space* 4. small meeting room for 30 person*** 5. small multipurpose room /exhibition area for 100 person sitting *** 6. digital achieve area** 7. digital collection access point** 8. audio visual facility 9. small cafeteria for maximum 40 people*** 10. building services and utility and parking***
