USC TROJANS

DE Wes Horton LB Hayes Pullard

POSITION OUTLOOK FOR 2012 QUARTERBACKS - In the past decade 5 Trojan QB's were drafted with Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart taking home Heisman Trophies. In '08 Mark Sanchez (PS#2) threw for 3,207 (66%, 34-10, #1 P10 pass eff) and he left early for the NFL (#1DC). In '09 true frosh Matt Barkley (PS#5) beat out PS#1 Mitch Mustain (8-0 st'r Ark) and soph Aaron Corp (PS#9). Barkley missed the Wash gm with an inj but st'd the other 12 and threw for 2,735 (60%, 15-14) but the Trojans avg just 222 ypg passing (lowest under former HC Pete Carroll). Barkley was noticeably quicker after dropping 10 lbs in '10 and threw for 2,791 (63%, 26-12) despite missing 1 gm. LY Jesse Scroggins (6'2" 210 So, PS#8), true frosh Cody Kessler (PS#9) and Max Wittek (PS#8) battled for the bkp job. Kessler was the bkp at the start of the season but Scroggins took over in the 2H of the yr with none of the bkps att a pass. Barkley had 5 td's (to 5 diff rec's) vs Syr then set the schl rec with 6 td's vs Colo. He also set a schl rec with 34 comp vs Minn (Todd Marinovich '89, 33) then broke it vs UCLA with 35 (6 td's again). He also threw for a Trojans record 468 vs Ariz (Palmer '02, 448). Barkley threw for 3,528 (69.1%, 39-7) then surprised many by turning down the opportunity to become a Top 5 pick in the NFL draft. That decision makes him the frontrunner for the Heisman and he could go down as one of the greatest USC QB's of all-time, which is saying a lot. RUNNING BACKS - USC is known for its' fine TB tradition and in '10 had to replace a 1,000 yd rusher (#4DC). Marc Tyler (PS#1) led with 913 (5.3) while Allen Bradford (PS#3, 668, 5.8 '09) was #2 with 794 (7.2!). True frosh Dillon Baxter (PS#4) was susp for 2 and often worked out of the Wildcat (252, 4.3). LY they had to replace Bradford (#6DC) and FB Stanley Havili (#7DC). Tyler was susp for the opener, then dislocated his shoulder and played in just 10 (#2, 568, 4.7) while rFr DJ Morgan (PS#6) was #3 with 163 (3.9) but lost some carries after some early fmbl issues. Curtis McNeal became the 27th 1,000 yd rusher here. He had 118 vs ND, 145 vs Stan, 148 vs UW, 94 vs UO and 124 vs UCLA finishing with 1,005 (6.9). TY they lose Tyler, Baxter and FB Rhett Ellison (#4DC MIN). Morgan is another yr removed from a HS knee inj and despite depth issues, this unit could be stronger. RECEIVERS - In '10 the Trojans had to replace their top two rec's (#3DC WR, #6DC TE).True frosh Robert Woods lived up to his PS#2 billing and led with 792 (12.2) while TE Ellison was #5 (239, 11.4). LY they had to replace their #2 (#6DC) and #4 rec's (#7DC) as well as a TE (#4DC). They added 3 PS#1's from the last two classes in rFr WR Kyle Prater, rFr TE Xavier Grimble and true WR George Farmer. A different frosh emerged however in Marqise Lee (PS#10) who had 144 vs UA, 124 vs Colo, 187 vs

UO and 224 vs UCLA to finish #2 with 1,143 (15.7). Woods, who was not 100%, still led with 1,292 (11.6) and probably would have won the Biletnikoff Award (finalist) had he been able to stay healthy. RFr TE Randall Telfer (PS#7) was #3 (273, 10.5) and Grimble added 144 (9.6). Farmer was moved to RB due to inj's and played in 4 while Ellison moved to FB (133, 6.0). TY they lose Brandon Carswell (2 st, 153, 8.5), Brice Butler (2 st, 150, 12.5) and Prater (1 rec). With 2 AA WR's including the Biletnikoff frontrunner in Woods and PS#1, #5 & #7 TE's, this is the best receiving corps in the country. OFFENSIVE LINE - In '10 USC had to replace 3 OL st'rs including a pair of 1st Tm P10 OL's (#2DC). I noted while the unit was less exp'd, the numbers could actually improve and they did to 189 ypg (5.2) allowing 18 sks (4.0%) for the 3rd str year. LY the unit had to replace 3 st'rs (#1DC) and had just 27 car sts ret (#111 FBS). Marcus Martin became the Trojans first true frosh to start at OG s/'04 (10 st) with the other 4 OL's all starting 12. USC's numbers dropped to 163 ypg (5.0) but they allowed just 8 sks (1.8%). TY they lose their outstanding LT Matt Kalil (1st Tm P12, 2Y st'r, #1DC MIN) who became the 22nd 1st Rnd OL drafted at USC along with OG Martin Coleman (1 st). This unit is loaded with VHT's, is more experienced with 60 car sts (8 of top 10 ret) and should achieve stronger numbers. DEFENSIVE LINE - For most of this past decade, the Trojans fielded a premiere D-line. In '03 they allowed just 1.8 ypc rush with 55 sks. Their "worst" year came in '05 when they yielded 3.8 ypc. In '09 they had to replace 3 st'rs (#1, #2 and #4 DC's) and all'd 128 ypg (3.7). In '10 they had to replace 1 st'r (#4DC) then lost DT Christian Tupou (11 st) to an ACL (spg). Even with 2 st'rs back, the Trojans slipped to allowing 140 ypg with their worst ypc s/'91 (4.4) and just 28 sks. LY they had to replace a #3DC DE and DT Armond Armstead (12 st, 43 tkl, 3 sk) DNP due to a medical condition. Tupou's return gave them 3 who had been full-time st'rs. The Trojans improved to 111 ypg (3.6) with 31 sks. TY they lose 1st Tm P12 DE Nick Perry (12 st, 54 tkl, 9.5 sk, #1DC GB), NT Tupou (12 st, 16 tkl) and DT DaJohn Harris (10 st, 22 tkl, 7 tfl). They do have 5 of their top 8 back and 8 VHT's incl PS#21JC Morgan Breslin (28 sk L2Y). This is, however, the D's least experienced unit. LINEBACKERS - In '08 the Trojans led the FBS in ppg allowed (9.0) with the best set of LB's in the country. While that '08 unit had to replace #1 and #5 DC's, they produced the Bednarik winner, a 1st Tm AA and #1, #2 and #4 NFL DC's. The reloaded '09 version allowed 19.8 ppg (worst s/'05). In '10 the unit ret'd intact but USC shockingly allowed 26.7 ppg (400 ypg, worst ever!). LY the Trojans had to replace 2 st'rs (#2 and #6 tkl'rs) incl a #7DC and moved Devon Kennard to DE. The Trojans introduced a new S/LB hybrid position in the spg to help combat the spread. While the unit was less exp'd, I said LY the ppg would improve and it did (23.6). RFr Dion Bailey's (PS#26) 14 tkl vs AZ were the most by a frosh here s/Chris Claiborne had 20 in '96. USC st'd 3 frosh at LB for the final 4. TY they lose MLB Chris Galippo (8 st, 47 tkl, 3.5 tfl, lost job), Ross Cumming (15 tkl), Shane Horton (41 tkl) and Tre Madden (15 tkl) who is OFY. Three of the top 6 are back incl 2 frosh who tied for the #1 tkl'r spot (7 VHT's). I'll call for significant improvement in the ppg allowed and this is USC's best LB corps s/'08 and one of the best in the country. DEFENSIVE BACKS - Under Carroll, the Trojans finished #16, #12, #7, #1, #9, #10, #6, #1 and #14 in my PDR from '01-'09. In '10 the unit was wiped out, losing all 4 st'rs (#2, #3 DC) and they had just 4 car sts ret. As you would expect, USC had its lowest finish in my PDR since I began keeping track in '94 at #61 (60%, 30-15). LY they had to replace a 2nd Tm P10 CB (#3DC) but had 7 of the top 8 back. One CB spot used 3 diff st'rs due to injury and USC only moved up to #57 (63.9%, 17-9). TY they

lose S Marshall Jones (1 st, 9 tkl) but have their top 9 DB tkl'rs back. USC adds in a PS#7 Florida transfer and a PS#3 JUCO and will easily have their best PDR under Kiffin. SPECIAL TEAMS - In Carroll's final 3 yrs ('07-'09), USC was surprisingly #101, #50 and #59 in my ST rankings. Kiffin hired ST cch John Baxter whose '09 Fresno St unit finished #20. The Trojans had to replace their K and top PR in '10 but still moved up to #23. LY they had to replace their P, K and top PR. They surprisingly only slipped down to #29. Woods was the top KR in '10 (25.6) and '11 (23.1) although Lee avg 28.5 on 10 KR. Walk-on Kyle Negrete beat out true frosh Kris Albarado (PS#11) and avg 40.1 (37.4 net). Andre Heidari was inj'd on a KO and missed a FG vs ND but had the longest FG by a USC player s/'90 (50 yd). He hit 15-17 FG and had 10 TB on 76 KO. TY the unit returns intact and I'll call for them to have their highest finish in my ST rankings s/'04 (#15). COACHES - Lane Kiffin was an asst at USC under Pete Carroll for 6 yrs (OC L/2) before becoming the youngest HC in modern NFL history at 31 in '07. He was fired by the Raiders 4 gms into '08 (5-15 2Y) then was the HC at Tenn in '09 (7-6) before taking over here in '10. The OC for a 3rd yr is Kennedy Polamalu (asst here '00-'03) who was an NFL RB cch (JAX '05-'09). Ed Orgeron is the DC and was also at Tenn in '09 (asst HC). His resume includes a HC stint at Ole Miss ('05-'07). Lane's father is the legendary Monte Kiffin who is the asst HC and was the DC at Tenn in '09 and has 26 yrs of NFL exp (TB DC 13 yrs). Carroll inherited a tm that had only topped 6 wins in a season once ('98) in the 5 yrs before he arrived. Not too many fans were excited about Carroll's hiring but his Trojans became the only tm in the country to finish in the AP Top 4 in each of the 7 yrs from 2002-'08. They won a National Title in '04 and nearly again in '05. 2009 was an unusual yr for Carroll as USC plummeted to 9-4 (5-4 Pac-10, -19.4 ypg 4th worst). This came just one year after they were +232.7 ypg. As I was writing my magazine in May '10, USC was my favorite to win the P10 before being hit hard over the summer by NCAA probation incl a post season ban for '10 and '11. USC was so thin that they cut back on contact in Aug practices. It seemed to hurt their D, especially early. The Trojans dropped to 8-5 with their 5 losses being their most s/'01 (3rd in the P10, 5-4, +46.4 ypg). LY USC had just 12 schlp Sr's to go with just 12 ret sts and drew both Oregon and Stanford from the North. Despite all that criteria, I picked them to win the P12 South even though they were ineligible for the Title game. The Trojans were clearly the best team in the South as they finished 2 full games ahead of UCLA. The season started slowly for USC with lackluster wins over Minn, Utah and Syr. Despite a 402-392 yd edge and a 22-21 lead in the 3Q, they lost at Ariz St by 21. USC jumped out to a 34-12 lead vs Ariz and held on for a 48-41 win. On a Thurs night at Cal, they benefitted from +3 in TO's and won 30-9. ND was in a great situation in their first night HG s/'90 and off a bye. USC had a big gm vs Stanford on deck but jumped out to a 17-0 lead. Leading 17-10 they got a key 80 yd FR td and had an impressive 31-17 win (443-267 yd edge). They were a diff tm after that. USC could've easily beaten #4 Stanford (lost in 3OT). They then walloped Colo by 25, Wash by 23 and ended #4 Oregon's 21 game home win streak leading 38-14 in the 3Q and hanging on for a 38-35 win. UO had just beaten #4 Stanford the previous wk. USC then clubbed UCLA 50-0 in the ssn finale. Their hopes for 2012 then took a major upswing when QB Barkley turned down the NFL and he is one of the 16 ret sts. Although USC had 3 net close wins LY, the Trojans get their big gm vs Oregon at home. USC is a Nat'l Title contender who could open the ssn #1 in the AP poll.

Coming into 2012, USC is just 7-5 their L/12 gms hosting Pac-12 foes (33-1 run prior). Trojans have won 5 str in Tucson by 16 ppg. LTH USC had a DD lead 3 different times in the gm vs #18 UA (14-0, 21-7 & 24-14). USC did allow a 85/9pl td drive (1:01) as UA cut the deficit to 3 but the onside failed. USC is 5-7 but LYs upset kept the Ducks from the Natl Title game. USC never trailed but up 38-14 alld 21 str pts. After a USC fum w/2:31 left OU went 66/15pl but missed a 37 yd fg as time expd. USC has won 5 str vs UCLA (32-7 avg win). The L2Y USC admitted this gm was their bowl. The Trojans showed no mercy & even went for a 2 pt conv up 20-0 LY. HT has lost 3 str in this series (played every yr S/46). LY USC led 17-0 but that was cut to 17-10 at HT.
