PSYSC Science-Research Congress 2012 The PSYSC Sci-Research Congress 2012, an inter-high school science fair competition, is a pioneering

effort of

Philippine Society of Youth Science Club, Inc. (PSYSC) aiming to meet the following objectives: 1. To promote Science, Technology and Environment among todays youth 2. To encourage research and development among the youth 3. To provide a venue of interaction between young intellectuals and experts in the fields 4. To facilitate an atmosphere of competitiveness as well as excellence in achieving scientific breakthroughs 5. To recognize the brilliance of budding scientists, engineers and researchers CONTEST GUIDELINES Note: Rules and Regulations have been promulgated to govern the competition. Any matters arising from the same, shall be referred to the NYSTESC 2012 Camp Core Committee and its decision shall be FINAL and EXECUTORY. THE CONTEST 1. The event is made up of two (2) parts: the Preliminary Judging and the Final Presentation and Defense. 2. The research should be an output-based project on the different fields of science. Innovative research with good impact to the community and/or help to achieve sustainable environment is highly encourage in this contest. PARTICIPANTS 1. The competition is open to all registered schools of the NYSTESC 2012. A school may have at most two (2) entries. 2. This is a team competition composed of a maximum of 3 students wherein 1 student is an alternate and 1 adviser of the participating school. The students and teachers must be also participants of NYSTESC 2012. Student participants should be officially enrolled and bona fide students of the school represented. Also, the adviser should be a member of the faculty or administration of the said school. PRELIMINARY JUDGING 1. Participants must submit an extended abstract of their research paper strictly on or before March 10, 2012 through our official Sci- Research Congress email psysc.camp2012@gmail.com. The submissions must follow the format provided by the CAMP Core Committee 2012. (Please see the format posted at www.facebook.com/psysc.nystesc or at www.psysc.org) 2. The extended abstracts submitted shall be pre-screened by our official judges. The official list of qualifiers for the final presentation and defense shall be released on March 24, 2012 at our website and our official facebook page. 3. Only the top seven (7) teams based on the pre-final standing will advance to the Final Presentation and Defense. However, if there will only be ten (10) teams or less who joined, all of them will advance. 4. Preliminary Judging will be done on the following:

Extended Abstract (80%) - [Ingenuity/Innovativeness (35%), Clarity in presenting key ideas (25%), Research Skills (25%), Thoroughness (15%)]; Documentation (20%) [Clarity of Visual Aids (40%), Creativity and Originality (40%), Overall Impact (20%)]. FINAL PRESENTATION and DEFENSE 1. Only the published qualifying teams are allowed to register at the sign-up booth for the contest installed during the registration on the event proper . 2. The qualifying teams should pass their complete research paper during registration as well as a 3 x 5 tarpaulin poster of their project. The tarpaulin poster must provide information on what the research was about and how the research output works. The research paper format is also posted at our website and facebook page. 3. Only two (2) participants are allowed to facilitate the presentation for each team. 4. Each team will be given a maximum of five (5) minutes to deliver their oral presentation. The presenter will be forced to stop after the given time. 5. The oral defense will follow immediately after the oral presentation. Each team will be given 10 minutes (max) for this. 6. Contestants may use any form of electronic presentation (e.g. powerpoint presentation, etc.) 7. The Final Presentation and Defense score will be based on the following criteria: Content and flow of presentation (40%), Delivery and presentation skills (30%), Mastery of the topic (30%). FINAL STANDING 1. The final standing will be based on the following: Preliminary Judging (60%); Final Presentation and Defense (40%) 2. Only three winners will be declared

Champion, 1st runner-up, and 2nd runner-up. The Champion will receive a trophy/plaque for the school, medals and certificates for the participants and Php5,000 cash. The 1st and 2nd runner-ups will also receive medals and certificates for the participants and a cash worth Php3,000 and Php1,000, respectively. 3. The decision/s of the Board of Judges is/are final and irrevocable. 4. The NYSTESC 2012 Camp Core Committee reserves the right to modify rules deemed necessary without prior notice. CHEATING The NYSTESC 2012 Camp Core Committee reserves the right to disqualify any participant found to commit cheating in any form. Also, the committee reserves the right to revoke any award given to any team found to commit cheating, upon which the participants should return all prizes obtained. Cheating also includes plagiarism and other crime committed under the laws regarding patent. Supplies and Provisions (Pasalubong Festival Competition) 1. All participating schools in the NYSTESC 2010 can join the Pasalubong Festival (PasaFest). 2. Only registered teachers from the schools are allowed to join. 3. Participating schools are to bring local foods and goods for at least a hundred people. 4. Each participating school will be given their own space where they are to set-up their booths on the night of Day 2 (Socials Night). The tables will be set up by 5:00 PM at the area where the PasaFest will be held. It will be up to the teachers if they will set-up early. What is important is that their tables should be ready for judging at 8:30 PM. 5. The food and goods brought are not to be sold. They must be shared to the science clubbers participants who would want to have a taste of their delicacies. 6. Teachers are not allowed to ask help from the students during the preparation. The students must be at the Headquarters (Session Hall) for the Socials Night. 7. The Teacher's session will end at 8PM. However, the PasaFest will only be open to the public after the socials night. 8. The following awards will be given: a. Best Booth Design b. Most Diverse c. Pinakamaraming Dala d. PSYSC's choice award e. Ultimate PasaFest 9. The first three awards will be determined by a set of judges. The PSYSC's choice award will be given to the school with the highest number of votes from the PSYSC Executive Council Assistance Team. The Ultimate PasaFest award will be based on the equal weight of the first four awards. 10. The decision of the Board of Judges is final and irrevocable. 11. Failure to follow these rules may result in disqualification. 12. The CAMP 2012 Programs Committee reserves the right to modify rules without prior notice. Codes in the Dark (Entertainment Night Competition) 1. The competition is open to all NYSTESC participating schools. Only one (1) eligible entry per school is allowed. 2. The concept for NYSTESC 2012s Entertainment Night Competition is a Blacklight Theater production. 3. The school entry may be comprised of 5-20 members who are bonafide students of the school they represent as of SY 2011-2012. 4. The performance will run for 4-6 minutes (entrance and exit included). One (1) point will be deducted from the average score for every minute excess of a fraction thereof. 5. The audition (elimination round) will be on April 1, 2012 from 12:00nn 2:30pm. Each school will be given a timeslot wherein they are required to audition. The guidelines for the audition will be given during the registration process. 6. All audio materials must be sealed in a brown envelop, with the schools name written across its flap. The contents of the brown envelope should be two (2) CDs (one for the music, one for the AVP), a back-up USB flash disk which contains the AVP and the music and a 100 word write-up about their performance. The AVP will not be considered as part of the performance. The write-up will be used as an introduction for the performance. 7. The blacklight will be provided by the NYSTESC 2012 Programs Committee.

However, the schools are highly encouraged to bring one of their own. 8. Other light source (i.e, LED light) may be used as part of the performance provided that it is battery powered with no more than 12V. 9. Only the top seven schools will compete in the main Entertainment Night competition (April 3, 2012). However, if there are only ten groups or less who joined the audition, all groups will perform on the night of competition. 10. Only three winners will be declared: 2nd Runner-up, 1st Runner-up, and Champion. 11. The decision of the Board of Judges is final and irrevocable. 12. The NYSTESC 2012 Programs Committee reserves the right to modify these rules without prior notice. CRITERIA FOR JUDGING Concept 30% This includes the relevance to the theme and the effective communication of the message to the audience. Creativity 30% This includes the choreography and the effective artistic use of props. Performance 30% This includes the mastery, precision, grace and fluidity of the performance. Overall Impact 10% Journal: Declassified (Essay Writing Contest) CONTEST OBJECTIVES 1. To test the participants understanding of certain science and technology issues and their relation to current social issues. 2. To encourage critical thinking and informed analysis of the science and technology world. 3. To recognize the students excellence in written communication skills. MECHANICS 1. The Essay Writing Contest is open to all participating schools to the NYSTESC 2012. 2. Only one participant per school is allowed to join. The participant should not be a contestant to other contests of the NYSTESC 2012. 3. The theme for the Essay Writing Contest will be given during the contest proper. 4. The essay must be written legibly in English (U.S.) with a minimum of 500 words and maximum of 1000 words. 5. A sign-up booth for the contest will be installed during the registration on the event proper. The schedule for the contest will also be displayed in the booth; Latecomers will be accommodated but will not be given any time extensions; and schools arriving after the schedule for the contest will not be accommodated. 6. Each contestant will be given two hours to complete his/her entry. 7. Participants that do not comply with the guidelines will be subject to disqualification. 8. Each individual entry will be judge based on the following criteria: 25% - Content (Depth of Information), 25% Structure (Grammar and Use of Language), 20% - Style (Creativity and Originality),30% - Critical Analysis (Opinion and Social Relevance) WINNER 1. The top three (3) essays will be recognize during the Awarding Ceremonies. The winners will receive medals and certificates of recognition.

Get Smart (School Quiz Contest Guidelines) \ CONTEST OBJECTIVES 1. To test the participants knowledge and understanding of science and technology concepts. 2. To encourage mastery of science concepts through healthy competition. 3. To recognize excellence of students in the field of science and technology. MECHANICS 1. The School Quiz Contest is open to all participating schools to the NYSTESC 2012. 2. The contestants to the School Quiz Contest must be a bona fide student currently enrolled in the school being represented. At most 2 students may represent a school. 3. The contestant/s to the School Quiz Contest should not be a contestant to the Essay Writing and Poster Making Contests. 4. A sign-up booth for the contest will

be installed during the registration on the event proper. The schedule for the contest will also be displayed in the booth; Latecomers will be accommodated but will not be given any time extensions; and schools arriving after the schedule for the contest will not be accommodated. 5. The Quiz Contest is composed of two parts Elimination and Final Round. ELIMINATION ROUND 1. The Elimination Round is a written exam, composed of 100 multiple choice questions and 5 Clincher questions. The questions will be based on the following categories: 20% Astronomy and Geology, 20% Biology, 20% Physics, 20% Chemistry, 20% Information Technology 2. The participants will be given to (2) hours to finish the exam. 3. Participants must bring a scientific calculator for the problem solving questions. 4. Participants should be in the testing area on or before the designated time. However, late comers will still be entertained but will not be given time extensions. 5. The ten students who get the highest score will qualify for the Final Round. FINAL ROUND 1. The Final Round is divided into three levels: Easy, Average and Difficult. 2. Each level is composed of 10 questions each, to be answered within 10 seconds for the Easy and Average level and 15 second for the Difficult level. A point is given for every correct answer in the Easy level, three (3) points for the Average level and five (5) points for the Difficult level. 3. Questions in the Final Round will be taken from the NYSTESC 2012 topics: 25% Optics, 25% Materials Science, 25% Complex Systems, 25% Renewable Energy 4. The top three highest scorers will be declared winners 5. There will be a Clincher Round in case of ties. 6. For the Clincher Round, three (3) questions will be given with a time limit of 10 seconds each and a point will be given to each correct answer. The highest scorer will be declared as the winner in the Clincher Round. 7. After the Clincher Round, if there will still be ties, we still proceed to the Sudden Death Question until the winner is declared. 8. The decision/s of the judges is/are final and irrevocable. 9. The NYSTESC 2012 Core Committee reserves the right to modify the guidelines if deemed necessary without prior notice. Prop Ops (Poster Making Contest) CONTEST OBJECTIVES 1. To promote science, technology and environment through visual interpretations. 2. To encourage imagination and creativity. 3. To recognize excellence and skills in the arts. MECHANICS 1. The Poster Making Contest is open to all participating schools to the NYSTESC 2012. 2. Only one participant per school is allowed to join. The participant should not be a contestant to other contests of the NYSTESC 2012. 3. The theme for the Poster Making Contest will be given during the contest proper. 4. A sign-up booth for the contest will be installed during the registration on the event proper. The schedule for the contest will also be displayed in the booth; Latecomers will be accommodated but will not be given any time extensions; and schools arriving after the schedule for the contest will not be accommodated. 5. Each contestant will be given two hours to complete his/her entry. 6. Participants that do not comply with the guidelines will be subject to disqualification. 7. The organizers will provide a 14 sized cartolina which will be used as a canvas. 8. The contestants will bring and may use any of the following materials: Oil pastel, Poster paint, Water color, Crayons, Charcoal pencils, Permanent markers, Pencil 9. Each individual entry will be judge based on the following criteria: 25% - Creativity and Style, 40% - Theme Accordance, 25% - Originality, 10% - Over-all Impact 10. The top three (3) posters will be recognized and will receive medals and certificates of recognition during the awarding ceremony. WINNER 1. The top three (3) posters will be recognize during the
