COURSE TITLE : PHILIPPINE POLITICS AND GOVERNANCE COURSE CODE : HISTGOV UNITS : 3 PRE-REQUISITE : NONE CO-REQUISITE : NONE COURSE DESCRIPTION : This course intends to provide FAITH students with an historically-grounded approach in studying the dynamics of Philippine politics. Discussions will concentrate on the trajectory of the formation of the Philippine state, including its relations with social groups, over the centuries. Such discussions will be guided not only by the research or findings of scholars in Philippine history but also by academics who worked in the (other) field of Social Sciences.

Course Objectives At the end of the semester, FAITH students should be able to: identify conceptual and analytical tools that can describe the dynamics of Philippine politics; emphasize analytical themes rather than dates and names as the building blocks of history, focusing on connections and relationships between people, events, and places; explain the role of states and various social groups in shaping the course of Philippine history; evaluate the Philippine states efficacy to promote societal transformation; and examine models that can enhance the states capacity and social groups constructive participation to realize the countrys transformative goals.
