It is the means of c ommunication in every nook and corner of the world. The paper concentrates on ch allenges in teaching English as a second language. In India, particularly in sou th India we have lot of challenges in teaching English as a second language. For the past three years of my experience, i have faced the challenges. English as a second language Classroom management Time constraint Technical advancement Teaching methodology English as a second Language: Teaching English in south India is one of the Herculean tasks. In south India, P articularly in remote villages, we find the attachment towards Tamil language an d it is the first language for them. We have poorly qualified teachers teaching English in those places. The major flaw in our Indian system of education (i.e. Rote learning method) contributes a lot to the challenges. They dont teach langua ge rather teach literature for the sake of examination or to complete the syllab us. Since, Tamil language is their first language; we dont have well qualified fa culties in both languages so that they can contribute better. Most of the colleg es or schools are affiliated to a particular board or university. Curriculum is either outdated or doesnt cater to the needs of the people. In which English beco mes a difficult language to learn and contextualization becomes a challenge. Env ironment plays a major role in cultivating English in the students. Since in Sou th India, especially in remote areas people generally speak Tamil language, whic h is a challenge for the English Language teachers. Language teachers are not op en to new methodologies, techniques. Moreover, English has just become a languag e to teach literature not to teach language. Classroom management Classroom management is one of the main reasons in which our English language cl asses become utter failure. Student study in English medium but they dont underst and English. Classroom includes a heterogeneous group of students to which a par ticular teaching methodology will work for a group and failure for other group. For example, Grammar translation method will be a successful method for people i n remote areas in contrast communicative language method will be a failure to th em. Communicative language method is a successful teaching methodology for the s tudents in urban areas. In a classroom, with different level of students it requ ires lot of effort from the students and teachers side. In this situation, a tea cher cannot be facilitator rather a guide in every aspect of teaching language. Language evaluation is one among the failures in teaching English language. Furt hermore, classroom ratios of pupils are 1: 40-80 but ideal classroom is 1: 20-25 with all these limitations, to manage a class of forty minutes is a mammoth tas k for a teacher. Time constraint Time management particularly to the teachers is a key aspect in a successful car rier. As our institutions are affiliated or limited to no of classes with the po rtions to complete with the stimulated time is a challenge. To conduct an Englis h language class based on creative learning method or communicative language met hod in which a teacher is mere facilitator requires lot of homework to be done. At least two hours of preparation requires for an hour class of English. Based o n schedule allotted to the teacher with other responsibilities its a difficult ta sk, which contributes in failure of the language classes. Technical advancement: Technology in todays modern world is a readymade tool for learning. Sugatamitras r esearch on technology has proved that technology can be helpful when we use it. Not every teacher is comfortable to utilize it. Technical failures are common. I t is expensive for the management to invest in it. Most of the technological gad gets or products are commercial in which it is a major drawback in the technical advancement. Maintenance of the technological products cost a lot.

Teaching Methodology Teaching methodology is an area where a constant research is been done to arrive at a successful teaching methodology. Various teaching methodology is been impl emented in various rural and urban areas. Creative learning method, Rote learnin g method, communicative language teaching method, Structural oral translation me thod, Direct method, Bilingual method, Humanistic approach. The best teacher and best methodology is in which needs of the students are taken care and produced results. Solution to the Challenges in teaching English as a second language.
