SIMPLE CASE STUDY: FAMOUS ARCHITECT This is a simple documentation on the life and design philosophy of a famous architect (globally or nationally) with the objective of growing your arsenal of famous architects knowledge and taking inspiration from their life and work. This is also an exercise in data gathering, literature case study and desktop/online research and referencing. Direction: 1. Choice of famous architect. Family name of architect must start with the same letter as students family name. 2. Famous Architect. Must be known nationally (national artist, conservation architect, overrated/under-rated) or globally (determinants include: Pritzker prize winner, starchitect, innovative and revolutionary in architectural genres such as architectural research, sustainable architecture, etc.). The architect must be recognizable. 3. Pressure Point. The tricky part here is putting together a cohesive documentation on the architect there will be so much information on your chosen architect that you may find hard to condense all the information and only choose one (1) of the incredible projects that he/she has worked on or is working on. Please make educated choices. Outline: 1. Architect Essentials (include photograph) 2. Short biography (may include timeline of his/her career and life) 3. Design philosophy (may include who/what influenced him/her and what critics have said about his/her designs) 4. Architects signature architectural work (1 work only please) which, logically, should correspond to his design philosophy). Include a short account on the details of the building, i.e. site, year completed, praises or critics on it, 5. References (use APA style of citation) Format: 1. Please avoid directly pasting whole accounts from your sources. Endeavor to paraphrase the sentences and make them compact and concise. You may bullet points to keep your work crisp. Please be mindful of spelling and grammar. 2. Text must be typed on Short (Letter) Bond Paper using 12 pt. font (any sans serif font, i.e. Calibri, Arial, Tahoma, Verdana), single spaced with standard margins. Label each assignment with your name, course & year, the date of submission in the upper left hand corner of each page and in the upper left-hand corner, the subject/course name, title of the assignment. 3. Please all fit in two (2) sheets of paper only, no more, no less.
What is a Case Study? A case study is a story about something unique, special, or interestingstories can be about individuals, organizations, processes, programs, neighborhoods, institutions, and even events. (Yin, 2003) The case study gives the story behind the result by capturing what happened to bring it about, and can be a good opportunity to highlight a projects success, or to bring attention to a particular challenge or difficulty in a project. Cases (refers to the unit of analysis or topic chosen for study i.e., the individual, organization, or program) might be selected because they are highly effective, not effective, representative, typical, or of special interest. A few examples of case study topics are provided belowthe case studies would describe what happened when, to whom, and with what consequences in each case.
