A TITAN MANUFACTURING PROMOTION

Titan by name, Titan by nature

TITAN MANUFACTURING MAY HAVE STARTED OUT AS A TWO PERSON OPERATION, BUT THE COMPANY HAS GROWN IMMENSELY OVER THE PAST DECADE AND NOW PROVIDES A WIDE RANGE OF QUALITY LOW LOADERS THAT ARE IN USE ALL OVER AUSTRALIA.
While Titan Manufacturing was started only 13 years ago, its experience in the industry dates back almost four decades. In fact, the companys owners, Doug and Margaret Phillips, started an earthmoving business with a single truck in 1972, before launching Titan Manufacturing 25 years later. As the earthmoving business became more and more successful, Doug and Margaret identified a need for a construction equipment manufacturing company to fill a gap in the marketplace. Titan Manufacturing was launched to provide purpose built heavy machinery, repair services and spare parts. This range has grown to include a wide range of single, tandem, tri and quad axle low loaders; dog trailers; drop deck trailers; and spread deck low loaders all custom built to suit its customers requirements. And Titan Manufacturing lays claim to the fastest delivery times in the industry, with a build time of approximately eight weeks from the date of order on all low loaders, and three weeks on tag trailers. In addition, after a recent research
Budden Contractors quad axle spread deck low loader and dolly

Chinchilla which are really booming at the moment, carting all sorts of odd shapes and sizes. The trailer is used to cart a wide variety of machinery, from graders, compactors and rollers, to excavators and dump trucks you name it, weve carried it on the Titan trailer. The 11m Titan low loader with dolly was received and put to work around five months ago and is capable of carrying up to 48 tonne. While we hadnt dealt with Titan before, we found their prices to be very competitive and their product to be great quality. Titan gave us the flexibility to order to suit our requirements so that the finished product was exactly what we were after. There were changes to the floor, extra tie down points added and we were able to specify the axle configuration we were after, says Noel.

and development trip to Asia, Doug witnessed a range of modern technology used to enhance Korean production lines and has now adopted the same state-of-the-art computeraided drafting and design programs. Queensland company, Budden Contractors, purchased a quad axle spread deck low loader and dolly from Titan Manufacturing earlier this year, its first trailer from the manufacturer. Based in Chinchilla, the company now operates three low loaders and a range of tippers. Director of Budden Contractors, Noel Budden explains, We are in the harvesting and haulage business and also do a great deal of float work for the various natural resource sites around

Petrol pricing investigation

he competition watchdog has started a formal investigation into petrol pricing to determine whether fuel retailers have been involved in fuel price fixing. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has revealed its concerns over fuel retailers exchanging private price information. The ACCC says it is concerned that this process could be playing

a part in reducing competition by alerting competitors of their pricing intentions in order to quickly signal price movements, monitor competitors responses, and then react to them. The ACCC has put the industry on notice for some time about its concerns in this area, said ACCC commissioner Joe Dimasi in a statement published on the ACCC website.

The ACCC has now commenced a formal investigation into this matter, and a dedicated investigation team has been assigned. While the ACCC does not usually comment on its current investigations, the ACCC considered it appropriate to inform the public that it is undertaking this investigation given the significant public interest regarding petrol pricing, commented Mr Dimasi.

ATA welcomes additional funding for truck rest areas

he Australian Trucking Association (ATA) has welcomed the Governments budget announcement that it will spend an extra $140 million on truck rest areas and other productivity measures over the seven years from 2012/13 to 2018/19. Chairman of ATA, David Simon, said the announcement would help reduce the shortfall in the number of truck rest areas on the road system. The fatigue laws require truck drivers to take regular breaks, but there simply arent enough rest areas. The Government has built or upgraded more than 70 rest areas under its existing funding program, which expires in June, but there is still a long way to go, Mr Simon said. The program will also fund productivity measures like bridge upgrades to enable us to use vehicles like B-doubles and B-triples on more routes. These trucks carry more freight than conventional semitrailers, so you can do the same job with fewer trucks, leading to safer, more productive and more environmentally friendly outcomes.

I have congratulated and thanked Minister Albanese for this outstanding decision, which delivers on one of the ATAs long standing strategic priorities. Mr Simon welcomed the Governments announcement that it will press on with its road program, despite cutting $33.6 billion from the budget. The Government will offer an extra $3.56 billion toward duplicating the Pacific Highway in NSW. It will extend the Black Spot Program for another five years, which will prevent thousands of accidents, and will extend the Roads to Recovery program for local councils as well, he said. Every Australian will win from the Governments commitment to building better roads, because the benefits of lower transport costs and better safety percolate through the whole economy. Mr Simon warned that trucking businesses would continue to face tough times in 2012-13, with the Budget forecasting that household consumption and dwelling investment will remain subdued. Trucking businesses are under

continued pressure from their customers to cut costs. In addition, many are facing deteriorating payment terms, with customers not paying their bills for 60 days or more, he said. The Governments decision to allow companies to carry back up to $1 million worth of losses and get a refund of the tax they paid in earlier years will benefit incorporated trucking businesses facing temporary losses. But all trucking operators will be hit by the decision by transport ministers to increase the fuel tax on the industry by 10.4 per cent, or 2.4 cents per litre, and dramatically increase some registration charges. The budget papers show this decision will cost trucking operators an additional $698 million over four years for the fuel tax increase alone. Australias transport ministers will meet on Friday 18 May. At the meeting, they should reconsider or defer this tax increase given the budget forecasts and the tight or negative margins across the industry, he said.

FMP Group (Bendix) announces $8.8 million investment

ustralian brake parts manufacturer FMP Group (Bendix) has made a strong commitment to Australian manufacturing and to the Victorian State export program with the commissioning of a new $3.5 million moulding press as part of an $8.8 million upgrade to its Ballarat manufacturing facilities. The new advanced moulding press investment, supported by a $2 million grant from the State Governments Industry Transition Fund (ITF), was officially opened earlier this month at a ceremony in the Ballarat plant by the Minister for Manufacturing, Export and Trade, The Hon. Richard Dalla-Riva. Employing more than 280 personnel and producing in excess of 13.1 million brake parts each year,

FMP Group (Bendix) is already a leading exporter of automotive components and a major contributor to regional Victoria. Speaking at the opening ceremony, FMP Group (Australia) General Manager Graeme Dixon stated, The new press from world leading manufacturer IAG Industrie Automatisierungsgesllschaft M.B.H of Austria delivers a new era in technology allowing our highly skilled engineering team to develop and bring to market the most advanced products to secure our future as Australias and the regions leading brake component manufacturer. This high-tech press coupled with investments in other advanced equipment totalling $8.8 million is the largest made in this business in

First year of Decade of Action for Road Safety

o mark the first year of the international Decade of Action for Road Safety, Parliamentary Secretary for Infrastructure and Transport, Catherine King, has officially opened a forum at Old Parliament House. The Decade of Action for Road Safety was instigated by a United Nations resolution co-sponsored by 100 countries, including the Australian Government. Road safety is truly a global issue and I was honoured last year to host the Australian launch of the Decade of Action for Road Safety, said Ms King. Approximately 1.3 million people

die on the worlds roads each year and up to 50 million people sustain non-fatal injuries, with a large proportion of this trauma occurring in developing nations. The anniversary event was organised by the Australasian College of Road Safety together with the ARRB Group, with support from the NRMA-ACT Road Safety Trust, the AAA and ANCAP. The purpose of the forum is to bring together key road safety agencies and individuals who are making a difference in road safety. The forum is an opportunity to discuss the progress made in the first year of the UN Decade of

Action and to share the outcomes of Australias National Road Safety Strategy. Todays forum provides us with an excellent opportunity to take stock of the outcomes from the first year of the Decade of Action and the first twelve months of our own ten-year National Road Safety Strategy and to discuss future directions, said Ms King. Over the course of the Decade of Action we have a unique opportunity to look not only at the Australian experience but also at the global situation, to share ideas, experiences and expertise, and strive for sustainable solutions.

Hybrid truck a first for SICO

SW-based specialist manufacturing company, SICO South Pacific, has acquired a Hino 300 Series Hybrid to reduce its carbon footprint, save costs and benefit its clients. SICO, whose head office is in the US, recently purchased the 300 Series Hybrid 616 IFS model as its first company-owned truck in Australia. According to SICO Purchasing Manager Andy Lovis, the arrival of the new 300 Series Hybrid means SICO can now transport its own products to Wollongong and Port Macquarie rather than using external carriers, leading to a new level of operational efficiency. The additional benefits of the Hino Hybrid meant we could transport our

products more quickly, which is good for our business, he said. The Hino truck offers a significant suite of safety features - like its dual SRS airbags and vehicle stability control - something very important to fleet operators these days. Mr Lovis added that the purchase of a Hino Hybrid tied in with the companys commitment to minimising its impact on the environment. As a company, SICO is working hard to bridge the gap between supplying sustainable, earth-friendly product solutions and constructing products that represent good value for our customers - and the Hino Hybrid is a perfect fit for our operations, he said. The Hino 300 Series Hybrid features

SRS airbags, four-wheel ventilated disc brakes with ABS brakes, electronic brake-force distribution and vehicle stability control - all as standard equipment (as per Hinos entire 300 Series range). The Hybrid also has an auto stopstart system to save fuel by shutting down the engine when the vehicle is stationary (which the driver can choose to switch off). The Hybrids exhaust emissions exceed the requests for Euro 5 and meet EEV (Enhanced Environmentally Friendly Vehicle) standard which, combined with the Hino Hybrid fuel consumption and subsequent emissions-reducing technology, makes it arguably the cleanest light duty truck on the Australian market, according to Hino.

$28 million Central Australian roads boost

ocals, freight companies and tourists are set to benefit from a $28 funding injection into Central Australian roads in the Budget 2012, Minister for Lands and Planning Gerry McCarthy has announced. The Henderson Government is growing the Territory through this significant investment into our Central Australian road network, he said. Not only will these works better the driving experience for our families, tourists and truckies, they will also provide job opportunities for locals and suppliers. As part of the Territory Governments Territory 2030 strategy, the Government

is continuing to grow the size and skills of the NT workforce, while maintaining high levels of investment in public infrastructure, to underpin long-term development and growth. Mr McCarthy said a $5 million injection would go toward upgrading and sealing seven kilometres of Namatjira Drive on the popular tourist route, the Red Centre Way. This will complete the sealing of the entire 157 kilometre length of Namatjira Drive, which will make the journey for tourist buses and travellers in caravans, a lot smoother, he said. The work is expected to start mid 2013 and be complete early 2014 with

an estimated 50 people employed on the site throughout the construction of the project. A further $2 million will continue the ongoing upgrading and sealing of the Tanami Road under the Working Futures strategy to improve the lives of remote Territorians, through better access to communities in this instance. McCarthy said the funds would facilitate the sealing and upgrading of four kilometres of road, with more to come as the route from Alice Springs to the Kimberley is progressively sealed. He said about $21 million would be spent on maintenance in the Central Australian region in the 2012 Budget.

Road toll continues to fall
ccording to the Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics Road Deaths Australia: Monthly Bulletin April 2012, the number of people killed in road crashes during the 12 months to April 2012 has fallen by more than three per cent, a reduction of over 40 deaths. Parliamentary Secretary for Infrastructure and Transport, Catherine King, said that although the latest figures show a downward trend in road deaths, there is no room for complacency. According to these statistics, the

number of people killed on our roads over Easter this year is the lowest in 10 years, Ms King said. Across jurisdictions, the latest annual comparisons show large falls in Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT. There were still 102 road deaths in April, but compared to the average for April over the previous five years, the current figure is 18.7 per cent lower, Ms King said. New official figures show that deaths of young adults between the ages of 17 to 25 have been falling at an

average of 7.9 per cent per year. Australia has a record of achievement in improving road safety and this latest report supports that. We do not believe that any death or serious injury should be regarded as an inevitable or an acceptable price to pay for using our roads and we will continue our efforts to reduce the national road toll even further, Ms King said. The National Road Safety Strategy forecasts a cut in road deaths and serious injuries by at least 30 per cent by 2020.

Glare
Horizontally reflected light such as sunlight or artificial light including car headlamps can create annoying and sometimes dangerous glare. Glare can be extremely dangerous even in foggy or overcast conditions. Kenworth sunglasses cut glare and aid in reducing user eye-strain.

GoinG the

next step
Swedish truck manufacturer, Scania, has already made some euro 6 trucks available on the european market well ahead of its introduction in 2013. tim Giles speaks to the engineer responsible for the new models engine at the companys HQ.

Theres more to sunglasses than meets the eye

True to its word
having to use diesel particulate filters (DPF). the authorities did not like that, they wanted to push diesel particulate filters on all diesel vehicles. So they added in the particulate number count. So the industry was forced to add particulate filters. DPFs add maintenance costs, exhaust back pressures and a further loss in fuel efficiency. the new european legislation also specified a new World harmonised test cycle to be used when assessing trucks for the new regulations. the new test includes much more simulated city driving, and tests both cold and warm engines. this increases the level of difficulty for the truck manufacturers as DPFs have to work even harder in stop start operation. the new test cycle is the toughest of its kind in the world, surpassing the strict Japanese testing procedures. in the past higher particulate matter levels were allowed in transient cycles with lower levels specified when the vehicle was stationary. the cleanliness of the new exhaust gas particulate filters can be demonstrated by the fact the paper filters are completely clean after 30 minutes operation when compared with the same filter from a euro 5 engine. Further proof of the much improved particulate matter output in the euro 6 engines is in the fact the new exhaust pipes are completely clean inside and over time will become rusty rather than dirty. Politicians are not supposed to push technology but they have clearly done that in this case, says Bjorn. We now have to deal with a regulation which limits us to 800 billion particles per kilowatt hour. this is hard to count, and measurement technology has been tough to develop to meet this new part of the rules. however, we do believe that euro 6 is the last major step in the reduction of particulates in exhaust gases. We think the next step in exhaust emission regulation will concentrate on carbon dioxide. even without euro 6 we have seen a huge drop in the level of nitrogen oxides and particulate matter emitted by truck engines out on the roads. So far, Scania has released two engines from its range as euro 6, the 440 and 480 hp 13 litre. the company says its new engines will achieve the same fuel economy possible with its euro 5 product. this has been achieved by changing the eGR settings in a way that increases nitrogen oxide emissions but also increases fuel economy, running more efficiently. the increased nitrogen oxides are cleaned up by primemovermag.com.au 51.

he series of exhaust emission regulation changes of the past 20 years have come thick and fast. the latest emission reduction to affect europe will be introduced in 2013. euro 6 sees a reduction in nitrogen oxides allowed and a sizeable tightening on the amount of particulate matter in exhaust gases. Scanias development team in Sodertalje, just outside Stockholm in Sweden, explained to Prime Mover what has had to be done to the engine systems over the line to meet the latest regulations. euro 6 comes into effect as of 1 January 2013 for new models and extends to all truck models in europe on 1 January 2014. Scania has already released some of the new models onto the european truck market in anticipation of some october 2011

governments offering incentives to trucking operators who moved to the cleaner trucks earlier than they are mandated. Low emission incentives were effective in bringing forward the adoption of euro 5 technology in many countries in europe. however, no major european country has yet announced any measure, either reduced road tax or reduced road tolls. the european Union only recently finalised the euro 6 emission level figures first suggested in July 2009, giving truck manufacturers a tight deadline. Apart from the usual limits of allowable pollutants in exhaust gases, a new kind of limit was introduced. this restricts the number of individual particles permitted to be emitted. nitrogen oxides are reduced by 80% when compared to euro 5 levels, down to 0.4g per kilowatt hour. Particulate matter is halved to 0.01g per kilowatt

hour with carbon monoxide unchanged at 1.5 and hydrocarbons reduced by 75% to 0.13. euro 6 has been, and is, a challenge to us, says Bjorn Westman, Scanias engineering Director, head of engine Development. in practice, the mass limit for particulates has made the amount of particulate matter the engines can emit much smaller than the regulators imagined, i think. When we started looking at euro 6, particulate counting was not on the table. Different scenarios with nitrogen oxide levels and particulate matter mass were discussed along with their effects on fuel economy. the politicians set the limits knowing it would drive a 2% fuel economy penalty when compared to continuing with euro 5. it was clear to us it would be possible to achieve half the particular mass emissions without

I always said I was going to own the biggest and best float company around but that went by the wayside and I became a horse trainer instead, before establishing Tailored Freight, so it all just marries together really well. The opportunity to start Tailored Freight arose when Waynes long time friend, Todd Moraitis, was working for his uncle Nick at the Melbourne fruit market. At the time Todd knew everything there is to know about fruit and vegetables so thats basically how it started, says Wayne, who began Tailored Freight with Todd in mid 2006. The business almost started overnight. Tailored Freight began with four employees and now employs 11. Based near the Argosy both of which still have their place in the fleet today. Before long, the demand placed on the two vehicles had increased and there was a need to implement a third vehicle within the first six months of the companys operations. This year another two vehicles were added to the a new supermarket depot was being built on the Albury and Wodonga border and Todds uncle needed to have some freight transported. Footscray market in Melbourne, Tailored Freight began its life with two B-doubles, towed by a second hand 2005 Mack Vision prime mover and a brand new Freightliner

fleet, bringing the total number of prime movers to five and the total number of trailers up to 11. Tailored Freight now operates nine insulated tautliners and two refrigerated pantech trailers which all operate as B-doubles, servicing the Melbourne, Wodonga and Shepparton districts as well as all the distribution centres in between. Fruit and vegetable cartage accounts for approximately 90 per cent of operations, while general cartage takes up the remaining 10 per cent. And while there has been several opportunities for the company to travel interstate, Wayne says that the companys fleet is geared to service the needs of Victoria. We dont want to be the biggest but we are trying to be the best, he says. It is easy to get too big and lose sight of the big picture. We are quite happy to stay around this sort of number of trucks. Every trailer in the fleet has been manufactured by Freighter, with all but one trailer purchased brand new. The most recent trailer purchased is a second hand Freighter trailer that has been completely refurbished. All vehicles in the fleet operate seven days a week and the business is open every day of the year except for Christmas Day and Good Friday. Horse training is no different to the fruit and vegetable market, it also runs seven days a week so the two work hand in hand, Wayne says.
