History Land Surveying is the art and science of using geometry to determine very specific physical points on land to specify boundaries upon and below the earth. For at least 5,000 years, surveying has been an important element in determining these points and lines for construction and other purposes. The Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt and Stonehenge were planned with the aid of basic geometry. This early form of surveying served as a basis for accurate orientation according to North and South. Since ancient times, when the Nile and other river banks overflowed, farmland was washed away, and property boundaries had to be reestablished. Again, the survey provided the methodology. The first formal tax register known was established by the Romans. Their empire was defined and divided by professional land surveyors in 300 AD. Some other areas where a land survey is needed include the drawing of maps, transportation systems and to establish and protect the ownership of Real Property. JAC Surveyors - Tools Instruments used in land survey work may include the tape measure, a level, and a THEODOLITE, to measure horizontal and vertical angles, and a prism, which returns light pulsing to measure distance. Triangulation is applied from a known point of location and elevation to make the necessary calculations. Modern survey equipment has taken the land survey from a primarily optical process into the digital age with electronics and computers. Surveyor Certifications Land Surveyors are certified and degreed professionals. A bachelors degree in Surveying Engineering is evidence of formal training at advanced levels of math, including trigonometry. Further, the holder of this degree has an aptitude for physical science and working as part of a technical and field team. These graduates are in very high demand. The Advanced Diploma in Spatial Information Science is evidence of mastery of the combined disciplines of mathematics, engineering, geography and computer science. Additionally, at this post graduate level of competency, critical thinking and cognitive science is applied as art merges with science. RMIT programs RMIT is the world renowned Australian university for technology. The schools alumni are among the best qualified land surveyors in the world. The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology organizes Land Surveying into three converging disciplines: Surveying, Mapping and Geographic Information Services. Degrees in Spatial Information Services are earned the respective levels of Certificate III in Spatial Information Services, Diploma of Surveying and ultimately, the Advanced Diploma of Spatial Information Services. Land Survey Professionals from RMIT are at the zenith of their profession, with graduates from all levels involved in important projects at the commercial and government level. Public works projects are consistently awarded to firms populated by RMIT alumni, including the prestigious Jac surveyors, in Melbourne, Australia.
