IDENTIFYING A CHEMICAL REACTION PURPOSE To observe different chemical reactions where the four signs to identify that a chemical

change has occured can be observed. MATERIALS 2 well-plates 2 plastic bottles wood splints lighter or matches pipet droppers yeast powder acetic acid 0.8M (CH3COOH) hydrogen peroxide 3% (H2O2) sodium bicarbonate solid(NaHCO3) PROCEDURE Reaction 1. a) In a clean plastic bottle put 1/2 teaspoon of sodium bicarbonate. b) Add 5 mL of diluted acetic acid and close the bottle. c) Record your observations d) Light up a wood splint and introduce it in the bottle opening. Record your observations. Reaction 2 a) In a clean plastic bottle add 1/2 teaspoon of yeast powder. b) Add 5mL of hydrogen peroxide and close the bottle. c) Record your observations. d) Light up a wood splint and blow on it (leave only the tip hot red) and introduce it to the bottle opening. Record your observations. Reactions in well-plate 1 a) Place the well-plate over a piece of paper so you can number (1-4) each well from the outline. b) Add 10 drops of each of the reagents in the forder shown below and record your observations. Well Reagent 1 Reagent 2 Observation (R1 + R2) Reactions in well-plate 2 1 NaCl CuSO4 2 NaOH CuSO4 3 NaCl AgNO3 4 NaOH AgNO3

a) Place the well-plate over a piece of paper so you can number (1-8) each well from the outline. b) Add 10 drops of each of the reagents in the forder shown below and record your observations. Well Reagent 1 Reagent 2 Observation (R1 + R2) Well Reagent 1 Reagent 2 Observation (R1 + R2) PRE-LAB QUESTIONS 1. What is the distinction between "clear" and "colorless" as they apply to solutions? Is a clear solution necessarily colorless? Is a colorless solution necessarily clear? 2. Explain the difference between chemical and physical changes. 3. Mention the 4 signs that can help us identify that a chemical reaction is taking place. 4. In complete sentences, define the following terms: a) Reagent b) Precipitate c) Exothermic Reaction DATA TABLE SAMPLE REACTANTS REACTION (Y/N) OBSERVATIONS (EVIDENCE) 5 Zn HCl 6 Al HCl 7 Zn 8 Al 1 Zn CuSO4 2 Al CuSO4 3 Zn AgNO3 4 Al AgNO3

ANALYSIS AND CONCLUSIONS 1. Which reactions produced a change in color? 2. Which reactions produced bubbles? 3. In which reaction where you able to notice a change in temperature?

4. Which gas do you think formed when you combined yeast and hydrogen peroxide? Why? 5. Which gas do you think formed when you combined sodium bicarbonate and acetic acid? Why? 6. Which combinations produced precipitates? 7. Was there a combination that did not present any of these signs? Why do you think this happened?
