INTRODUCTION TO 3G AND Wi-Fi

HOW BOTH ARE SAME ?

HOW DO BOTH DIFFERS FROM ONE ANOTHER ? ADVANTAGES OF 3G & Wi-Fi OVER ONE OTHER IMPLICATIONS OF 3G & Wi-Fi IN INDUSTRIES & PUBLIC POLICY CONCLUSION REFERENCES

INTRODUCTION TO 3G
3G was launched commercially by NTT DoCoMo in Japan branded FOMA in October 2001.

3G Defines the collection of Third Generation cellular technologies which are designed to allow mobile cellular operators to offer integrated data & voice services over cellular networks.
3G is meant for mobile service providers (M.S.Ps) only. M.S.P generally use a licensed spectrum to provide network coverage.

To support 3G, service mobile operators maintain a network of interconnected & overlapping mobile base stations. Each Base Station may support users up to several kilometer's. Upgraded 3G networks can support data rates from 384kbps to 2mbps.

INTRODUCTION TO Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi stands for Wireless Fidelity. It is the popular name for wireless Ethernet 802.11b standards for WLANS. Wi-Fi allows collection of PCs, peripherals ( printers, access servers etc. ) to share sources. It generally operates using unlicensed spectrum 2.4GHz band and the current one supports data rates www.123seminarsonly.com up to 11mbps.

Base stations equipments are owned & operated by end-user communities. Though each base stations covers small range, it is possible to provide contiguous coverage over wide areas by using multiple base stations.

Wi-Fi provides Hotspots for airport, universities, net cafes etc. Whereas now-a-days there is a growing movement of so called Free Nets where individuals and organizations are being provided with open access to www.123seminarsonly.com subsidized Wi-Fi network.

3G & Wi-Fi : SIMILARITIES

Both are wireless technology.

Both facilitates mobility.

Both are access technologies. Both offers broadband data services. Both supports always on connectivity

HOW BOTH ARE DIFFERENT ?

3G
3G represents an extension of mobile service provider model.

Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi comes out of the data communication industry (LANs) that is a bi-product of computer industry. It provides speed much more than 3G i.e. about 11mbps. Here privacy is limited & communication gets less secured.

It provides speed from 384kbps to 2mbps. It provides better support for private/secure communication.

3G

Wi-Fi

3G is more developed as a It is more developed with business and service model respect to the upstream than Wi-Fi. supplier markets. It uses licensed spectrum which is expensive. Interference from spectrums of other service provider is strictly prohibited. It uses unlicensed spectrum which is less expensive. It can not prevent the interferences because it uses unlicensed spectrum.

3G
It supports a maximum bandwidth of 15-20 Mhz. It operates within the frequency range of 200-3000 Hz.

Wi-Fi
Here the bandwidth is up to 22 Mhz. In this case the operating frequency range is 2.4Ghz

ADVANTAGE OF 3G OVER Wi-Fi

It provides a larger coverage area as compared to Wi-Fi.

3G provides more safe and secured communication than Wi-Fi.

3G provides un-interfered service from spectrums of other networks. While traveling from place to place 3G becomes more acceptable than Wi-Fi.

ADVANTAGES OF Wi-Fi OVER 3G

Wi-Fi is cheaper in comparison to 3G technology. It provides much faster speed as compared to 3G. It is widespread and more commonly used than 3G.

IMPLICATIONS FOR INDUSTRIES & PUBLIC POLICY

A) Wi-Fi can be a good competition.
The success of Wi-Fi wireless local access alternative is likely to be good for local competition.
If both 3G and Wi-Fi survive, then the diversity of visible networking infrastructure strategies will be conductive to greater facilities-based competition. Wi-Fi model depends on wore line infrastructure to connect to the Internet Backbone

B) Wi-Fi & 3G can compliment each other.

Each of the technology has distinct advantages over the other that would allow each to offer higher quality services under disparate.

3G and Wi-Fi networks provides the opportunity to offer both near coverage with good voice telephony support.

C) Spectrum policy is a key.

One of the key distinguishing features between 3G and Wi-Fi is the use of licensed verses unlicensed spectrum.

3G secondary markets would allow more flexible management of property rights. Wi-Fi the emergence of spectrum markets may make it possible adopt a suitable mechanism for addressing congestion issues.

D) Technical progress favors heterogeneous future.

Technical progress in wireless services favors a

heterogeneous wireless future once the world accepts the need to coordinate heterogeneous technologies.

CONCLUSION
This article offers a qualitative comparison of two wireless technologies that can be viewed simultaneously as substitute and / or complimentary paths for evolving to broad band wireless access. The two technologies are 3G , which is the preferred upgrade path for mobile providers , and Wi-Fi , one of the many WLAN technologies. The goal of the analysis is to explore two divergent world views for the future of wireless access and to speculate on the likely success and possible interactions between the two technologies in the future.
