Luna The Moon

Luna is Latin for the English word lunar which is also known as the moon. The Moon is 4.5 billion years old. The moon's diameter is about 2,160 miles, somewhat more than 1/4 the earth's diameter. The moon has about 1/81 the mass of the earth and is 3/5 as dense. On the Moon's surface, the force of gravitation is about 1/6 that on earth. The surface temperature rises above 212F at lunar noon and sinks below -247F at night. There are dark areas on the Moon. These are really dry land but long ago astronomers thought they were filled with water, so they called them seas.

Luna-Greek: Selene

Selene was the Titan goddess of the moon. She was depicted as a woman either riding side saddle on a horse or in a chariot drawn by a pair of winged steeds. Other goddesses were also associated with the moon, however, only Selene was represented by the old Greek poets represented as the moon incarnate. Selene was the daughter of Hyperion and Theia, sister of Helios, the Sun and Eos the Dawn. She had an affair with the Zeus, and out of that produced Pandia, the Goddess of Brightness, Ersa, the Goddess of Dew, and Nemea, the Mountain Goddess.
