HISTORY: 1997 - 2003

Originally Taipei 101 was going to be a 66-floor office tower. On January 13th, 1998, the towers height raised from 66 floors to 101 floors. On March 31st, 2002, five construction workers were killed when a 6.8 earthquake caused two cranes to fall from the 56th floor. During the week of August 10-16, 2003 it overtook the Petronas Towers in structural height, becoming the official world's tallest building.

The building formally opened on New Years Eve 2004, Taipei Mayor Ma Ying-jeou and Legislative Speaker Wang Jin-pyng cut the ribbon.

GREEN CREDENTIALS OF TAIPEI 101

It has been awarded the Platinum LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification.
Taipei 101 is the tallest building in the world with Platinum LEED Certification Energy-Efficient The building achieved an annual saving of 14.4 million kWh of electricity, which is equivalent to US$1.2 million. The national standard of CO2 level is set at 1,000 ppm; however, the design specification for the CO2 level in Taipei 101 is 600 ppm only.

INTERIOR DESIGN OF TAIPEI 101

The architectural style of the interior areas is also based on Oriental revivalism. The tower is serviced by 61 elevators and 50 escalators.

These elevators are the fastest in the world, rising at 1010 m per minute (60.48 km/h) and descending at 610 m/min (36.6 km/h). No wonder each elevator costs a whopping $US 2 million plus.

ACCOMMODATION AT TAIPEI 101

Taipei 101 is primarily designed for commercial offices. The first four floors consist of retail facilities. The 7th floor is occupied by the Taiwan Stock Exchange. Floor 101 houses a private VIP Club called Summit 101. There is an observatory restaurant at floors 85 and 86. Taipei 101 offers two decks - the 89th floor is allocated as the indoor observation area and the 91st floor is allocated as the outdoor observation deck.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THE TAIPEI 101

Taipei 101 still holds a couple of world records in the height categories tallest to the structural top and tallest to the roof.
The 2012-2013 fireworks show featured 22,000 rockets launched.

The Taipei 101 is one of the most stable buildings in the world.
Taipei 101 outbeats the Petronas Towers measuring 451.9 m (1,483 ft) to become the tallest in the world in 2004 . Taipei 101s record in turn was beaten by the Burj Khalifa measuring 829.8 m (2,722 ft) in 2010 . The tower is equipped with enough electrical energy to power 6,000 homes. It is filled with enough electrical cabling to stretch from Taipei to New York, and back again. Nearly 40,000 people go in and out of the tower each day, during peak periods of the year.

CONCLUSION

Taipei 101 contains a highly innovative design due and represents how strong buildings can become with innovative designs. A stable building in times of an earthquake and notched corners with tuned mass dampers to prevent typhoon from toppling the building.
