Definition of space
An area reserved for some particular purpose. In this course, childrens space refers to learning areas in child care centers, preschool centers and other educational/entertainment places for young children such as library, theme park etc.

Learning center/environment
A learning center is an area in a room that contains a variety of materials and is identified by its physical boundaries. The room should be organized in a way that children know how and when to use the learning centers.

Learning centers should contain three categories/components of stimulation.


1. Sensory stimulation - should excite the senses, colourful and contain visual material and relevant. - is enhanced by creating diversity through patterns, textures, object shapes and forms. - provide opportunity to touch, smell, listen and to taste variety of materials.

2. Activity simulation - comes from arrangements that encourage children to participate in activities.

3. Cognitive stimulation - refers to the teachers utilization of the room to encourage children to work with materials that are developmentally appropriate.

The process of creating a learning center begins by:


Stating learning objectives for specific age groups Identifying which learning centers can accommodate those objectives. Developing a variety of learning activities that are appropriate for each center. Preparing the materials necessary for each activity. Structuring relevant learning experiences requires a planning process to create a nurturing playroom environment.

Description of learning centers


Art
should contain materials that are available for immediate use and located near tables or easels where they will be used. Materials should be easily selected and returned by children. Requires ample work surfaces, smooth floor, low large table, counter tops. Space for hanging smocks, drying paintings, storing projects in progress. Space for hanging and displaying completed ones.

Block play
Should contain sufficient area for children to build undisturbed. Blocks should .be organized in order on shelves. Sufficient quantity for several children to build large structures. Since role play and block play often support and compliment each other, they should be located in close proximity

Construction Provide enough woodworking equipment, wood scraps and nails to accommodate up to 4 children for pounding and sawing. Located away from major traffic and include a place for tool and wood storage.

Dramatic play Should include equipment, furniture, and accessories such as men and womens dressup clothes. Arranged where children can see them. Have a full-length mirror, dolls of different skin colors in the area.
