Parapsychology

The scientific study of paranormal phenomena. Paranormal: Beyond normal, Unusual experience that cant be explained on usual scientific principles or by common sense. The Society for Psychical Research, founded in 1882 in London.

Parapsychology

Parapsychology: The term parapsychology (also known as psi phenomena) was coined in or around 1889 by philosopher Max Dessoir, and originates from para meaning "alongside", and psychology. The term was adopted by J.B. Rhine in the 1930s as a replacement for the term psychical research.

Psi phenomena

Psi is a term for parapsychology derived from the Greek, psi, 23rd letter of the Greek alphabet; from the Greek psyche, "mind, soul. Types: Traditionally the term has had two sub-categories Psi-Gamma - Pertaining to paranormal cognition (ESP, remote viewing, etc.) Psi-Kappa - Pertaining to paranormal action (psychokinesis, etc.)

ESP: Extrasensory Perception

ESP is the perception of objects, thoughts, or events without the mediation of the known human senses. It is the most testable and well known area of parapsychology Often referred to as the 6th sense. 3 main types of ESP

Telepathy

Transfer of information (thoughts or feelings) between 2 individuals. one person sending thoughts to another or perceiving another's thoughts without using any of the five recognized senses.
Term was coined by F. W. Myers in 1882. Popularized by fictional novels and movies.

The ability to see information about people, objects, or locations without using any of the five senses.

Includes crystal (distant events) /mirror (spiritual vision) gazing (Scrying)

Precognition

Fore knowledge of an event, Knowledge of a future event or circumstance not obtained by inference or deduction, but by paranormal means. Precognition is what most people mean when using the term psychic. Premonition: A strong feeling that something(unplea) is about to happen.

Origin of Belief in ESP

The term ESP was used as early as the late 19th century. Used to describe the ability of a person who had been hypnotized or in a trance state yet could sense things without using the five senses. However, the phenomena of ESP may go back to Biblical times.

Persistence of Belief in ESP

A survey published in 1987 by Univ. of Chicago found that 67% of all adult Americans believe they have experienced ESP, up from 58% in 1976.
According to leading Russian scientists, "Many people believe in clairvoyance, astrology, and other superstitions to compensate for the psychological discomforts of our time."

Kirlian photography is a collection of photographic techniques used to capture the phenomenon of electrical coronal discharges. It is named after Semyon Kirlian, who, in 1939 accidentally discovered that if an object on a photographic plate is connected to a high-voltage source, an image is produced on the photographic plate.
