Green Computing ?

Also called as GREEN IT. Green computing is the practice of using computing resources efficiently.

Designing , manufacturing and disposing Computer , servers with no impact on the environment. To reduce the use of Hazardous materials, maximize energy efficiency during products life time.

Why Green Computing required?

Computer Consumes a lot Energy. Printing often unnecessary stuff is waste. Reduce pollution. Toxicity

History
It is originated in 1992 at the U.S Environmental Protection Agency that launch Program. Shortly after that term has coined.

Approaches
Product longevity. software & deployment Optimization. Power Management. Recycling.

Methods to implement Green Computing

Carbon free Computing. Solar Computing. RoHS Computing. Virtualization.

Energy Consumption
CPU uses 120 watts. CRT uses 150 watts. Energy use comes from Electrical current to run CPU, mother board , fan, processor etc.,

Reducing Energy consumption

Turn off the computer when not in use ,even for an hour. use power save mode. Use hardware /software with Energy star label. use LCDs instead of CRTs as they are more power efficient.

Energy star
One of the first manifestations of the Green computing movement was the launch of Energy star program in 1992. It serves as a voluntary label awarded to computing products that succeeded in minimizing use of energy while maximizing efficiency.

Energy star
Energy star applied to the products like computer monitors , television sets , refrigerators , air conditioners, etc.,

Future of Green Computing

The plan towards Green IT should include new electronic products and services with optimum efficiency and all possible options towards energy savings.

Conclusion
The greenest computer will not miraculously fall from the sky one day , itll be the product of years of improvements. The features of a green computer of tomorrow would be like: efficiency ,manufacturing & materials, recyclability , Service model , selfpowering , and other trends
