Communication is the activity of conveying . Any process: sharing information, ideas & feelings.

Is an active process and a changing event. Is the key to success. To live is to communicate. To communicate effectively is to enjoy life more fully. Is a two-way traffic & not a oneway process.

Involves: - spoken and written words (verbal & nonverbal) - body language (use of postures, gestures & facial expression) - personal mannerisms - style - physical environment

o use of hand, body, face, arm or head adds meaning to a message.

Intrapersonal Communication
Example: Internal thought or language - day

Interpersonal Communication Communication to Group

dreaming, thinking aloud, rehearsing, etc.

Example: Face-to-face spoken communication

meetings, telephone conversation, interview, etc.


Example: One person to a group speech, lecture,

concert, paintings, novels, poems, etc.

Tutorial task 2
Observe the way people (men, women & children) communicate in various places and occasions. For example at home, work, market, park, school/college, etc. Pay attention to their verbal (speech patterns) and non-verbal (symbolic behaviour, facial expression and body language) communication.
