Mobile Phone

Introduction
Mobility has contributed tremendously to the high rate of mobile phone usage in this generation. Mobile phone device has become one of the most common communications tools being used by both young and old. Everyone seems to own a mobile phone now. It may even be weird to meet a person who does not own a mobile phone device. Much is made of cell phone use in public places, with the older generation being generally scornful of youngsters flipping out their phones in restaurants, classrooms, public transportation and other such venues.

The rapid evolution of mobile technology has placed quite a burden on our brains. Nowadays, attention to even the most pressing of matters can be interrupted at any moment by a familiar buzzing in the pocket -- a friendly nudge to "pay attention to me!" that many find virtually impossible to resist, even while driving on busy roads. These frequent and unplanned interruptions, coupled with growing expectations for immediate responses, challenge our cognitive control system at its very core. Cognitive control is our ability to focus on accomplishing a task in the context of competing demands. This increasingly taxed ability is what has allowed humans to achieve remarkable feats, such as developing languages and building complex societies.

Negative impact of use of mobile phone

Teachers are facing a very difficult battle against pupils and parents regarding the interference of the mobile phone.

Owning a mobile phone itself is not a bad idea at all. The problem is many people do not make effective use of the mobile phone device as they should, which often affect our social lives negatively. I would commit a fallacy of hasty generation if I quickly conclude that mobile phone device has a negative consequence on the individual using it because situations are different and people are different.

However, the use of mobile phone device has an indirect linkage and can contribute negatively to better social attitudes with reference to attitude or behaviour and communications. Several people are overusing, misusing or even abusing their use of mobile phones. Such persons tend to ignore those around them; they become emotionally attached to their phones. At that point, they can even sleep with the phone. There is this emotional attachment which often becomes visible when the phone gets missing. When a person who owns a mobile phone loses it, it is as if a baby has been lost. The phone becomes the first thing they touch when they wake up, and the last thing they read before going to bed. This leads to a religious argument that mobile phones are now taking over the Bible or the Quran because previously, when a good Christian/ Muslim wakes up, (s)he prays and read the bible as a way of devotion to his / her faith. Now the phone seems to be taking over

In a demographic view of social networking activity on mobile devices, women were found do use their phones to "tweet" and "friend" 10% more than men. And while social networking is commonly thought of as something for "the kids," the 35-54 age group had more active mobile social networkers than any other group.

The results of investigation by: The Open Communication Journal, 2008, 2, 127-135

The first hypothesis test examined the relationship between Cell Phone Accessibility and Helping Behavior. It predicted that people in the CPA group are less likely than people in the NCPA group to help strangers.

The second hypothesis, which was proposed in order to test whether social cues is a mediator, consists of three sub hypotheses. Hypothesis II predicted that people in the CPA group will show less social cues such as Smiling behavior than people in the NCPA group.

In an attempt to examine this relationship they investigated the relationship between Cell Phone Usage and Helping Behavior. According to their findings, those who used their cell phones were less likely than those who did not use their cell phones to offer help to the confederate. The results of our study indicate that the accessibility and usage of a cellular phone may inhibit users from offering help to strangers who are in need. When they are in the midst of proximate others, cell phone users experience an obligation toward both the distant and the proximate others, show a desire for privacy, and are cognitively distracted forcing them to distribute their attention between the caller and the proximate other. Positive impact of social phone network

Nonetheless, the arguments presented above do not necessarily mean the mobile phone device is not important. The mobile phone device is a very important communication tool as it was built to enhance social contacts and network while enhancing business productivity. With our mobile phones, we are able to update ourselves on where our families and friends are. We are able to know what is happening around us. The mobile phone enables us to be on time during appointments. It also helps in verifying the degree of temperature to enable us chose appropriate dress code for the day. It keeps us informed on current events because of its connectivity to the internet. It relaxes it also when we play games with it or listen to music through it.

Our mobile phones should not take all our attention. Using a mobile phone is now very rampant. Even children in basic schools may even own mobile phones. It may be good, but does it really enable these children to concentrate on their education? If you are a student, remember the phone is for communication and network. It is meant to prevent stress of being worried and not knowing where your relatives/friends are, or what they are doing. Once you are with them, avoid frequent use of the device. It will be disgraceful if after you read this article, your boss/teacher caught you fidgeting with your phone while at work or in school. Time is money and each minute counts. We do not have all the time in this world.
