INTRODUCTION

Glass wool consist of fine, long, inorganic fibers bonded together by high temperature binder. These fibers (each of approx. 6 - 7 microns diameter) are distributed in such a way as to trap millions of tiny pockets of air in the product, thereby creating its excellent thermal and acoustic insulation properties. Centrifugal glass wool is a silk-like material made by fiberization in the TEL process and praying of thermosetting resin. Glass wool is noncombustible, non-toxic, and resistant to corrosion. It has low weight by volume, low thermal conductivity, stable chemical property, and low moisture absorption rate due to its excellent hydrophobicity. Thanks to its intertwined flexible fibers, glass wool is the best insulating material against noise, cold and heat and also offers excellent fire-resistant properties. The panel, felt, and pipe products made of glass wool have been used in the industries of construction, chemical, electronic, energy, metallurgy and communication.

INTRODUCTION

The use of Glass wool for the thermal insulation of external walls and ceiling has been shown to reduce energy consumption by 20% to 30%. Glass wool is manufactured from widely available and renewable raw materials and provides environmental benefits in terms of resource saving and energy saving in every stage from pre-manufacturing to end use. Glass wool boards are widely used as insulation material for exterior and interior walls it is excellent in noise reduction. The property makes it an ideal choice for wall partition in conference rooms, hotels and residential homes. The material is light and thin, which allows more space as useful floor area. glass wool products are categorized in boards or panels, felt and tubes in various color. The panels may feature a layer of reinforced aluminum foil for enhanced exterior appearance, and are ideal for the insulation of production or storage facilities for minimum cost, yet nice appearance and effective insulation.

Manufacturing process

After the fusion of a mixture of natural sand and recycled glass at 1,450 C, the glass that is produced is converted into fibers. It is typically produced in a method similar to making cotton candy, forced through a fine mesh by centripetal force, cooling on contact with the air. The cohesion and mechanical strength of the product is obtained by the presence of a binder that cements the fibers together. Ideally, a drop of bonder is placed at each fiber intersection. This fiber mat is then heated to around 200 C to polymerize the resin and is calendared to give it strength and stability. The final stage involves cutting the wool and packing it in rolls or panels under very high pressure before palletizing the finished product in order to facilitate transport and storage.

Health problems

Some fiberglass products warn of "possible cancer hazard by inhalation". The European Union and Germany classify synthetic vitreous fibers as possibly or probably carcinogenic, but fibers can be exempt from this classification if they pass specific tests. A report by Health Canada, mentions unspecified studies on glass wool exposure that show long-term exposure to glass wool does not cause cancer in humans or animals. Evidence for these classifications is primarily from studies on experimental animals and mechanisms of carcinogenesis. Studies of fiberglass factory workers show significant increases in lung cancer but do not show clear exposure-response relationships and may be confounded by the effects of smoking.A 2002 summary by International Agency for Research on Cancer puts insulation glass wool into Category 3 carcinogen, "not classifiable as to its carcinogenicity to humans"

1. superior tensile strength and resilience makes the product ideal for
applications in which there will be vibration, jolting or high compression. 2. Glass wool is chemically inert and has no impurities such as iron shots, sulphur and chloride. 3. Glass wool is durable 4. Non-hygroscopic, glass wool can be used to completely fill cavity walls. If by accident glass wool gets wet, it will dry out very quickly. Even at 90% relative humidity, glass wool absorbs less than 1% of its weight in water. 5. Being rot proof, odorless, glass wool will not sustain vermin 6. Being flexible, glass wool can be molded to the shape of articles to be insulated and consequently making the installation easier. Where rigidity is required glass wool boards have a good stability and are unaffected by variations of temperature.
