What is a LATHE DOG???

A lathe dog, also known as a lathe carrier is a device that clamps around a work piece and allows the rotary motion of the machines spindle to be transmitted to the work piece.

Use: for turning between centers in conjunction with a drive plate and drive pins Types: straight leg or bent leg type

MAKING OF LATHE DOG: Procedural steps involved:

Basic workpiece Drilling Circumferential hole Tapping

1.Basic workpiece:
Lathe settings Cylindrical ms work piece Dimensions: 42 mm diameter and 27 mm height Turning and facing Final work piece: 40 mm diameter with 25 height.

2.Drilling:
Machine used: Lathe Horizontal drilling machine Speed of lathe : 450 rpm 25 mm through hole Tools required: Drill chuck; chuck key; center drill(60 degree taper); drill bits of sizes 10mm, 20 mm, 25 mm diameter.

How Does It work??

Components required:

Face plate Supporting rod and fasteners Dead center, live center Lathe dog and workpiece

Pre-requisites: The workpiece must be center drilled on both end faces for the holding purpose.

The entire set up is in conjunction with the face plate, which acts like a secondary holding device, holding the carrier pin and live center.

Face plate holds the live center whereas dead center is attached to tail stock.

The work piece passes through the lathe dog, which is equipped with a locking screw and its center drilled ends fitting into live center and dead center. The supporting pin and the locking pin are perpendicularly touching each other so as to enable the rotation of lathe dog along with the face plate.

Project Limitations :
Design Consideration - Choosing the proper shape and size of the dog. As the lathe dog rotates, its swing diameter over the lathe bed should not be too much. Speed Consideration Spindle speeds are reduced due to the unbalanced nature of the set up. Size consideration The maximum work piece diameter we can turn is 25mm
