TITLE: ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN OF A THREE STOREY BUILDING FOR TANDIKA MARKET.

PROJECT TYPE: DESIGN CASE STUDY: TANDIKA NAME: BEST W. MLAY. ADMISSION NO: 100101P7281

INTRODUCTION.
Tandika market is the market which is located near Mahunda Street in Temeke municipal. As it is important as a social service for the people around it, its expected to be of good quality in terms of arrangement and its design in general, so that to attain the requirements needed.

PROBLEM STATEMENT
This market is facing a problem of insufficient market space due increase in number of customers and traders.

MAIN OBJECTIVE.
The objective of this project is to prepare architectural drawings for Tandika market.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE. The specific objective of this project is to draw three storey building for Tandika market.

METHODOLOGY.
In order to achieve the intended objectives the following methodology will be used; Literature review. Data collection. Data Analysis.

EXPECTED OUTCOME.
The expected outcome of this project is to provide the architectural drawing for Tandika market.

LITERATURE REVIEW.
GENERAL CONCEPT OF DESIGN.
The stages of drawing development where drafters and designers are involved they usually consists of three phases namely: Schematics drawings Preliminaries (design development) drawing Final working drawing

LITERATURE REVIEV CONT.

SCHEMATICS DRAWINGS.

A schematic drawing is a drawing that shows you the parts of a system without going into too much detail so as to overwhelm the person who is viewing the drawing. This is the first phase of building construction drawing.

LITERATURE REVIEV CONT.

PRELIMINARY DRAWING
Preliminary drawing phase is the second phase of the plan development. Preliminary drawing gives you the chance to see the building plan before all of the technical information is added. These are primarily single line drawings showing architectural and engineering design in greater details.

Note; the information shown on preliminary drawings must be sufficient to describe the project adequately.

LITERATURE REVIEV CONT.

FINAL WORKING DRAWING

The working drawings includes all the information needed to obtain a building permit. This section will deal with architectural drawings as listed below: Title sheet Site plan Floor plan Roof plan Reflected ceiling plan Elevations Sections Details Schedules

LITERATURE REVIEV CONT.

DESIGN FACTORS OF THE BUILDING
Design of buildings depends on quite a number of factors such as : Land area available Fund resource available Availability of materials to be employed Requirement of the users of the building {D.N.GHOSE (1987) Civil engineering drafting and design}

LITERATURE REVIEV CONT.

PROPER ORIENTATION IN BUILDING DESIGN
For proper orientation in building design the following are the factors to consider: Easy access to all spaces Adequate ventilation of air and light Safety and security Maximum utilization of space

LITERATURE REVIEV CONT.

DIMENSIONS All drawings that are drawn to scale must show the scale used in the appropriate location, adjacent to the portion scaled.
SCALE

In order to illustrate a building on a handy sized sheet, the building must be scaled down to the appropriate size to fit on the sheet properly.

LITERATURE REVIEV CONT.

SITE LAYOUT
Site layout is an important phase of any construction activity from beginning to the end. The impact of good layout practices in terms of time, money and construction efficiency increases with the size of the project.

LITERATURE REVIEV CONT.

SITE RECONNAISSANCE The site reconnaissance phase of a site investigation is normally in the form of a walk over survey of the site. It must contain sufficient information about distribution of activities that may be present within a given area.

LITERATURE REVIEV CONT.

SITE VISITING This is the inspection activities of the site. This includes the measurements of the area, after knowing the boundaries of the site and also to know all activities present in the area.

LITERATURE REVIEV CONT.

REQUIREMENTS OF THE MARKET

The following are the requirements of the market place: Goods of different types i.e. grains, fruits, vegetables etc Traders which are registered Customers from different places Parking area and butchery Toilets Cleanness Power supply(electricity) Enough space for each trader Entrance and exit Drainage, water supply and water disposal.

DATA COLLECTION
The methods used to collect data will be as follows: Site layout Site reconnaissance Site visiting Census for the people of Tandika Site plan.

THE LAYOUT OF MARKET AREA.

SITE RECONNAISSANCE
This is the preliminary inspection of an area of land before an engineering survey made the inspection. The following are the result of market inspection which aimed to show the number of sellers and services available within the market. For the first case, the services available: Toilet service Cleanness service Security service

CENSUS FOR THE PEOPLE OF TANDIKA.

The census for the people of Tandika in the year 2002 was 41827, having 21101 men and 20726 women. The increase rate of people was 4.6% for that year. For the year 2010 Temeke municipal expecting to have a population increase of about 59939 people for Tandika area and for the year 2011 municipal expecting to have a population increase of about 62696 people. These are data collected from Temeke municipal.

4.0 DATA ANALYSIS

4.1 SITE VERSUS BUILDING DIMENSION. Dimension of the site The area of the site is 7429000000mm2. Dimension of the building
LENGTH(L)mm
85000

WIDTH(W)mm
65000

DATA ANALYSIS
Percentage of the area occupied by the building against the area of the site is obtained by taking the area of the building dividing by the area of the site times one hundred. Therefore: Area of the site 7429000000 Area of the building 5525000000 Percentage of the area
5525000000/7429000000 * 100 = 74.37%

DATA ANALYSIS
Therefore since the percentage of the area is less than 100% hence the building will fit to the area of the site which is proposed.

DATA ANALYSIS
4.2 CONTENTS OF THE BUILDING. This building containing three floors, where by: The ground floor, first floor, and the second floor will be having sellers and buyers it will be 3600mm in height so as to have large space since it will contain large number of customers and sellers. The ground floor contains: Area for sellers store Toilets Offices.

DATA ANALYSIS
The first floor contains: Area for sellers Store Toilets Offices. The second floor contains: Area for sellers Store Toilets Offices.

4.5 STAIRS
Design of a stair Specification 1. Going + 2Riser should be between 550mm and 700mm. 2. Appropriate size of:
Riser(mm) 155-220 165-200 Going(mm) 245-260 220-305

STAIRS
Given: Vertical rise= 1800mm Stair case length= 2590mm Design procedure I. Make assumption of riser size Riser= 180mm

STAIRS
ii. Find the number of riser Number of riser= vertical rise Height of riser Number of riser= 1800mm 180mm = 10 take number of riser to be 10

STAIRS
iii. Find exactly height of riser Riser height= vertical rise Number of riser Riser height= 1800mm 10 = 180mm Riser height is exactly 180mm

STAIRS
iv. Find number of treads Number of treads= number of riser 1 = 10 1 =9

STAIRS
v. Find the size of going Going size= stair case length number of treads = 2590mm 9 = 287.78mm = 287mm Going size is 287mm

STAIRS
Vi. Find pitch angle Tan Q= riser height going size = 180mm 287mm = 0.6272 Q = tan -1 (0.6272) Q = 32.1 The pitch angle is 32.1
