Use of Active Front End

Reduce the mains current harmonics
Only sine wave input current into the AFE

with standard ATV 61/71

with Active Front End

Schneider Electric

- Motion & Drives training - Active Front End Module 1 12/2009

Use of Active Front End

Saving energy by reducing the share of reactive power
Cos (phi) und (lambda) = 1 => THDi < 4%

Schneider Electric

15

Drive possibilities
Low harmonic drive 1:1 application

Low harmonic drive ATV61/71 with an Active Front End in series

Spare parts of AIC and INV up to 90 % identical

THD(i) value < 4%

Schneider Electric

- Motion & Drives training - Active Front End Module 1 12/2009

16

Drive possibilities
4-quadrant single drive 1:1 application

The same advantages as the Low Harmonic Drive

4-quadrant drive with variable energy and speed direction

E.g. at lowering a load, the energy is feed back to the mains

Changing from motor to generator is shock free

Schneider Electric

17

Drive possibilities
Common DC bus 1:n application

Low harmonic drive advantages

Active Front End with several Inverters via a common DC bus link
E.g. roller conveyors, motor test benches and group drives in sheet metal processing machines

Schneider Electric

18

Drive possibilities
Active Front End units parallel n:n application Several Active Front End units parallel with several Inverters Advantages
A higher supply / regenerating power An increased reliability due to redundancy The use of smaller units e.g. adapted to the size of the inverter in order to reduce the spare parts

Depending on power demand, individual Active Front End units can be locked or released during operation. Connection and disconnection must be only executed with no voltage!
