Forces of Equilibrium

Static Equilibrium
Forces is always recognized by the motions that result, but this does not mean that force exist only on moving objects.

Forces of Equilibrium

Static Equilibrium
F1 FN

Figure 1: Net Force

The force that causes an object to move is called NET (or unbalanced) FORCE

The weight (W) of the box is balance by force (FN) exerted on the floor. It also shows that there is no force that balances F1. Therefore, F1 is the net force in the figure.

Figure 2: Static Equilibrium

The weight (W) of the box is balance by force (FN). Therefore, it is a static equilibrium.

Definition
Static at rest Equilibrium a state of balance
Static Equilibrium

is a condition in which all forces acting on the body are balanced, causing the body to remain motionless

Forces of Equilibrium

Center of Gravity
The resultant force of the sum of the weights of all the particles that compose the matter may be considered at one point. This point is called Center of Gravity.

States of Equilibrium
Stable Equilibrium CG* of an object is at its lowest possible position Unstable Equilibrium CG* is at its highest possible position Neutral Equilibrium CG* is neither lowered nor raised when the objects is slightly disturbed.

First Condition of Equilibrium

+y F3 -x F1 F2 +x

Concurrent Force
Forces whose lines of action meet at a common point

-y

F4

It will remain in equilibrium condition if the forces in both x and y directions balance.

Forces of Equilibrium

First Condition of Equilibrium

No net force is acting, thus it will remain motionless.

+y
F3 -x F1

Net Force = Resultant Force

Single force which acts alone that produce the same effect as the system

F2

+x Rx = (-F1) + (+F2) Rx = 0

-y

F4

Figure 4: Concurrent Force

Since the components R in x and y directions are equal to zero, it is said to be Static Equilibrium.

First Condition of Equilibrium

F1 +y F2 F1y -x F1x F2x

F2y
+x

At equilibrium condition F1x balances the pull of F2x (F1x = F2x), while W balances the sum of F1y and F2y (W = F1y + F2y)
Rx = (-F1x) + (+F2x) Rx = 0 Ry = -W + (F1y + F2y) Ry = 0
