Objectives of Chapter 1
Once the Chapter is successfully completed, a students abilities will include: Identifying the areas of the AutoCAD 2008 screen interface Locating and using the function keys Entering commands through various methods Managing Toolbars Beginning a new drawing through the start from scratch start-up wizard Locating and opening an existing drawing

Coordinates has 2 modes when in a drawing command
X,Y coordinates Polar coordinates (Distance<Angle)
F7 - Toggle Grid Modes On/Off F8 - Toggle Ortho Modes On/Off F9 - Toggle Snap Modes On/Off F10 - Toggle Polar Modes On/Off F11 - Toggle Object Snap Tracking Modes On/Off
Choosing Commands in AutoCAD

Methods of choosing commands
Pick from pull-down menu Select from Toolbar Type command on Command Prompt Line
Pull-down Menus
Select pull-down through left mouse button Move mouse to command and click left button to select command
Tool Bar Selection

Coolbars = Toolbars Use mouse to track over Toolbar image for button detection Left mouse button click will select command
Command Prompt Line

Located at bottom of screen Left click in command prompt area and type in command Press Enter key to input command
Activating Tool Bars

Click right mouse button on any toolbar button to bring up the toolbar activation menu
In R2008, click View from pull-down menu and select Toolbar
Pick toolbar menu and apply to activate it
Right Mouse Clicking

It will get you everywhere!
Command and area specific menus will appear upon right mouse clicking The default Right mouse click menu is shown on the right
Right Mouse Click Menus

Short-Cut menus will appear within a command (All commands) The Default editing menu appears on the right
Icon Menus
Used for selection purposes of graphic objects
Pick a picture to select a hatch pattern
Command Aliases
Used for speed by experienced users Eliminates the need to remember and type the full command name
Over 75 different command aliases can be input at the command prompt line Can be customized to add or change commands
Starting a New Drawing

Create a New Drawing dialogue box
At the beginning of an AutoCAD session Select NEW file from pull-down or Toolbar
Four Options
Open an existing drawing Start from scratch Use a template Use a Wizard
Opening an Existing Drawing

Choose OPEN from FILE pull-down or use opening an existing drawing in the startup dialogue
Drawing files have extensions of .dwg

Choose Line Command

Or type L at command prompt
How many points does it take to draw a line?

Use the left mouse to pick points
Line Command - Quick Start

Use the right mouse button or enter key to stop drawing lines Close option creates a line between active segments
Only works with 2 or more active segments
Typing a U while the line command is active will undo the last segment of the line
Line Command
Drawing lines to accurate distances
Direct Distance mode (Point and Shoot) Point the crosshairs in the needed direction and type the distance that the line should be
Object Snaps
Uses geometry to location specific positions
Activation of Object Snaps (one time use only)
Typing the first 3 letters of the object snap name Holding down the shift key while clicking the right mouse button

Center
Center of circle or arc
Endpoint
End of line or arc
Extension
Extends lines & arcs by a temporary path
From
Must be used with another Object snap to establish a reference point
Object Snaps
Insert
Locates an insertion point of an object
Intersection
Finds the common intersection point between 2 objects
Extended Intersection
Locates the intersection between objects that do not touch
Midpoint
Locates the middle of arcs & lines
Node
Snaps to a point
Object Snaps
Parallel
Assists in constructing a line parallel to another
Perpendicular
Snaps to an angle of 90 to the selected object
Quadrant
Finds the 0, 90, 180, and 270 locations about a circle
Tangent
Assists in creating lines, arcs or circles tangent to another object
Object Snap
Deferred Tangent
Occurs when multiple tangent selections are needed to complete a task [ex. Drawing a line tangent to 2 circles requires 2 tangent picks, one for each circle, the first tangent selection is a deferred selection (line does not appear) until both tangents have been selected]
Object Snap Tracking

Allows the user to select more than one object snap location to determine a specific position. [ex. Use for finding the center of a rectangle in conjunction with the midpoint object snap]
Running Object Snaps

The object snaps that never stop working for you
Activate from Tools pull-down, drafting settings Right click on OSNAP button on status bar On/Off by OSNAP button
Polar Tracking
Assists in creating orthogonal lines (ORTHO) at specific angles
Set up in drafting settings On / Off by POLAR button
Polar Tracking & Tracking Points

Set the angle of usage and draw a line
A tool tip will appear showing both distance and angle of the line (Only shows up when line is equal to the angle setting)
Use in conjunction with Object Snaps

Creates temporary tracking points Very powerful tool Hold cross hair on an object to acquire a tracking point
To remove an acquired point, pass crosshairs back over it

Other Methods of Accurate Input

Cartesian Coordinates
Sounds like math, and it is exactly the same as in math Input as either Absolute or Relative Coordinates
Absolute X,Y Relative @X,Y
Polar Coordinates (aka: Vector Coordinates)

Used to input a distance and the direction angle Format: @Distance<Angle
Other Methods of Accurate Input

Polar Coordinates
To draw a line that is 4 inches long at 45 degrees the polar coordinate would look like: @4.00<45
Designers will use combinations of all methods of input to create a drawing
Circle Command
Activate from Draw pull-down
Multiple options to create a circle
Center, Radius Center, Diameter Other options (2 point, 3 point, Tangent) covered in Geometric Constructions Unit
A minimum of 2 points needed to create circle.

Select the center point Type the Radius or Diameter distance at the next prompt
Erasing Objects
Removes objects from your drawing
Activate from Modify pull-down
Prompt will appear to. select objects Cursor changes to selection box
Ways to select objects for erasure

Pick with selection box Create a window to select multiple objects Standard Window (objects must be inside window) Crossing Window (objects can touch or be inside window) Type ALL to select everything visible on screen

Crossing windows are created by picking points from Right to Left Standard windows are created by picking points from Left to Right

Saving a Drawing File

Save
Saves drawing to current name (Quick save)
Allows user to input name if drawing has never been saved
Saveas
Allows input of a drawing name or location every time Provides the ability to change file saving version

Activate from Help pull-down
Has 3 areas

Exiting an AutoCAD 2008 Session

Close
Closes the drawing but does not leave the software
Exit
Closes the drawing AND leaves the software
Both give an extra chance to save the changes in your work.
