Presentation on summer training at NTPC Faridabad

OVERVIEW OF NTPC

National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC) is the largest thermal power generating company of India. A public sector company owned by Government of India, it was incorporated in year 1975 to accelerate power development in the country. Within a span of 30 years, NTPC has emerged as truly national generating facilities in all the major regions of the country.

MAIN PLANT:

NTPC-Faridabad is a Gas based Combined Cycle Power Plant. It has two gas turbines of 138 MW each. Natural Gas, when fired in combustion chamber, runs gas turbine. Exhaust gases from gas turbines go to two Heat Recovery Steam Generators. Superheated steam generated in these generators is used to run steam turbine coupled with Power Generator to get 156 MW.

WATER TREATMENT PLANT

Teatment of water: Softening process Chlorination process Dechlorination process Ion exchange

DM PLANT: DM Plant has been installed to provide demineralized water for steam generation & equipment cooling. It has two streams of 100 m3/hr each. Effluents generated are neutralized in the neutralization pit before discharging to Central Monitoring Basin.

C.W. SOFTENING PLANT: Raw Water Softening Plant has been provided. The raw water received is treated in clarifier, then passed through sand filter and stilling chamber. The water from cooling water-softening system is fed into basin of cooling tower.

C.W. CHLORINATION PLANT: NTPC-Faridabad has a Chlorination Plant for Chlorination of circulating water. It protects the water of cooling tower against bacteriological contamination. It has also in-built chlorine leak detection system. To control leakage of chlorine, a Chlorine absorption tower has been provided.

Mechanical Department
It basically deals with these components -: GAS TURBINE [GT] There are 2 GT in FPGS. STEAM TURBINE [STG] There is one STG.

Conditions at which GT works in INDIA 1 bar atm. Pressure 65% Humidity 27 degree C Ambient Temperature GT Output 106 MW
Gas turbine Cycle are of two types Open cycle Close cycle

Cycles of generator

Open Cycle -: In this type of cycle exhaust gases are directly sent to the atmosphere.

Close Cycle -: In this cycle all the gases are continuously circulated through the system. It is neither taken from the atmosphere nor returned to it.

Diagram of closed cycle

COMBINED CYCLE POWER GENERATION USING GAS TURBINE AND STEAM TURBINE

Advantages of using combined cycle:

In open cycle system, the efficiency is only 32% but whereas by using closed or combined cycle system, the efficiency of plant comes out to be 49%. Hence, combined cycle is preferred over open cycle in order to increase the efficiency.

Advantages of using combined cycle:

Apart from the higher efficiency, the combined cycle power plants have following advantages: Low installation cost Better reliability Low environmental pollution

The major electrical components used in the switchyard are:

ISOLATORS: Isolators (disconnecting switches) are switches, which operate under no load conditions. They are used in addition to circuit breakers and are provided on each side of circuit breaker to provide isolation and enable maintenance.

While opening a circuit, circuit breaker is opened first and then the isolator. While closing a circuit, the isolator is closed first and then the circuit breaker.

EARTHING SWITCH: Earthing switch is connected between line conductor and earth. Normally, it is open. When the line is disconnected, the earthing switch is closed so as to discharge voltage trapped on the line. Generally, earthing switches are mounted on the frame of the isolators.

INSULATORS: Provision of adequate insulation in a substation layout is of primary importance from the point of view of reliability of supply and safety of personnel.

CONTROL AND INFORMATION

Its a department concerning the field of ECE. In the FGPS, application of instrumentation and control systems are for centralized, automated and safe plant control of equipments like gas turbines, heat recovery steam generators (HRSG), steam turbine generator and their auxiliaries to achieve maximum efficiency, reliability, safety and availability.

The operation of the power plant is controlled from the central control room in which the control panels are located. Provision is made for local starting and testing of the important equipments, pumps and motors.

For Instrumentation purposes -: Temperature sensors Pressure transducers For control purposes -: DDC-MIS

TEMPERATURE SENSORS
They are of three types as follows -: Bimetallic Field system Electrical RTD Thermocouple

PRESSURE TRANSDUCER
Different types of bourdan tubes for different types of pressure for low, medium and high pressure. For Low pressure (upto 1kg/cm2) Bellows are used. For Medium pressure (150 to 250kg/cm2) with c type bourdan tube. For High pressure above (300kg/cm2) spiral type is used.
