Smart Metering & Telemetry (SMT)

Important Definitions:
Smart Metering - an advanced meter (or metering system) that records consumption in intervals of an hour or less and communicates that information at least daily via some communications network back to the distribution company for monitoring and billing purposes. Smart meters enable two-way communication between the meter and the central system. AMI - Advanced Metering Infrastructure is a term denoting utility meters that measure and record usage data at a minimum, in hourly intervals, and provide usage data to both consumers and energy companies at least once daily. AMR - Automated Meter Reading is a term denoting utility meters that collect data for billing purposes only and transmit this data one way, usually from the customer to the distribution utility. Telemetry Remote measurement and transmission of data

Value Proposition Highlights

Early detection of metering or instrumentation failure (reduce estimated bills) Eliminate manual reading (reduces carbon footprint) Same Day billing (improved utility cash flow) More accurate and frequent readings (daily or any time there is a change in the contract between buyer and seller) Improved understanding of gas consumption--thereby enabling a change in gas use behavior (conservation) Introduction of new tariffs based on demand or time (customer choice) Optimized system pressure control (reduce Lost and Unaccounted for gas [LUAF]) Volume load study for system design, system model and rate design Theft detection/prevention (improved risk management) Remote services / report by exception (reduces truck roll and associated costs)
