Fire main

passenger ships: >1000 GT At least one effective jet of water is immediately available from any hydrant in an interior location and so as to ensure the continuation of the output of water by the automatic starting of one required fire pump; <1000 GT Automatic start of at least one fire pump or by remote starting from the navigation bridge of at least one fire pump. cargo ships : With ums there shall be immediate water delivery from the fire main system at a suitable pressure, either by remote starting of one of the main fire pumps from the navigation bridge or permanent pressurization of the fire main system by one of the main fire pumps. Dia of fire main should be sufficient for the discharge of 140 m/h

Hydrants
Position and number such that at least two jets of water, one of which from a single length of hose, should reach any part of the ship normally accessible to the passengers or crew . in ro-ro space two jets shall reach any part of the space. positioned near the accesses to the protected spaces. Pressure at hydrant passenger ships: 0.40 N/mm >4000 GT 0.30 N/mm <4000 GT cargo ships: 0.27 N/mm >6000 GT 0.25 N/mm <6000 GT

International shore connection

>500 GT On port and starboard from another ship or from the shore to the fire main

Fire pumps
Sanitary, ballast, bilge or general service pumps may be accepted as fire pumps, provided that they are not normally used for pumping oil and suitable change-over arrangements are fitted. independently driven fire pumps each capable of delivering at least the two jets passenger ships atleast 3 for > 4000 GT atleast 2 for < 4000 GT cargo ships at least 2 for >1000 GT Arranged such that All fire pump will not be put out of action in case of fire in any space >1000 GT Emergency fire pump with its power source and connections located outside the space of main fire pump, if fire in any compartment could put fire pumps out of service < 1000 GT

emergency fire pump

shall not be contiguous to the boundaries of m/c spaces/spaces containing main fire pumps. Where this is not practicable, the bulkhead between them shall be insulated to a standard of structural fire protection equivalent to that for a control station.

No direct access shall be permitted from the m/c space and its power source.

Fire hoses and nozzles

non-perishable material approved by the Admin be kept ready for use in conspicuous positions near the hydrants length of at least 10 m, but not more than: 15 m in m/c spaces; 20 m in other spaces and open decks; 25 m for open decks if max breadth > 30 m. at least 1 for each hydrant shall be used only for extinguishing fires or testing during fire drills and surveys. the number of hoses is decided by admin according to type of ship and the nature of trade In cargo ships: > 1000 GT, 1 no./ 30 m length of ship + 1 spare, / at least 5. <1000 GT atleast 3 + 3 hoses and nozzles for Ships carrying dangerous goods standard nozzle sizes shall be 12 mm, 16 mm and 19 mm Not more than 12 mm for accommodation For m/c spaces nd open deck not more than 19mm Approved dual-purpose type nozzle incorporating a shutoff.

Portable fire extinguishers

Type and design shall comply with the requirements of FSS code Arrangement: Accommodation, ctrl stations such that serviceability is not impaired by the weather, vibration or other external factors. extinguishers intended for any space shall be stowed near the entrance of that space. >1000 GT carry at least five CO2 not placed in accommodation, but in ctrl station (non conductive/corrosive) 100% spare charges for non rechargeable type/spare extinguishers 50% spare charges for those which can be recharged on board should be examined annually hydraulic pressure tested every 10 yrs
