The Western Line is the name given to all routes of the Mumbai Suburban Railway operated by Western Railways (WR).

STRENGTHS

Outdated technology of locomotive. Small and inadequate rail network. Problem of financial crunch. Corruption within department. Lack of accident proof magnetic wheels in all trains. Lack of safety. Poor infrastructure. Delayed train. Over crowded train. Low space capacity. Shortage of coaches.
OPPORTUNITY
Profit through privatization. Air condition facility in local trains. Introduce separate track for long distance trains. Increase the speed limit.
THREATS
Air condition buses. Improvement of other infrastructures i.e. Roadways. Metro trains in western region. Monorails.
OBSERVATIONS

Number of Stations Coming Under Western Railway is 36. Electricity is provided by TATA Power Supply, at Khapoli they have hydro electric power station.

Open tenders are for everyone (includes electronics, tracks and infrastructure) and the lowest quotation will get the Contract. Limited tenders:- check for credibility. To chalk out monopoly there is always a tender laid out.
Motor Man:- Shift of 6 Hours. Stand by motor man. Trains wont be cancelled because of motormans absence. Specific qualification isnt required there is some technical exam for selection of motorman. Profitability:Freight rakes have proven to be much more beneficial for western Railway as compared to the local day to day rakes. MAINTENANCE
4 Service Centers:Kandivali Lower parel Virar Mahalaxmi After every 2.5-3 months cleaning, car wash, Greasing and Servicing of trains are done. After every 15 days overall check is done, which also includes any Internal or External Body Part Replacement of the Rakes, if required. For cleaning of train some private companies comes up with tenders and accordingly they are chosen. Because of any reason trains breaks down there is a break van. Narrow chances of diverting and controlling.
CONCERNS
Over crowded station sand trains. Long queue for tickets. Unhygienic conditions. Loopholes in security system. No maintenance. Improper foot over bridge. No proper ventilation system. RECOMMENDATIONS
Systematised working of signalling system. Sentencing 3-4 days in jail for track crossing. Separate tracks for long distance trains. Improving ticketing service. Improvisation in track maintenance. Fine on spitting and throwing waste at the platform area.
