Summarize Mallory Slides

Mock Epic/Heroic disconnect between tone & content. The tone and diction indicate an epic subject, while its really not. The List/Comic Juxtaposition the grouping together of things that wouldnt normally fit with the rest on the list. Often includes sacred objects/subjects on list of mundane things. Tone one that doesnt match what youre talking about. Diction Some words are just plain funny, and this is used intentionally to get that humorous effect. Syntax unexpectedly/awkwardly pairing different structure or contradictory elements. The understatement of wars significance/ seriousness/ tragicness creates a humorous effect. The use of the term invading is contradictory and strong and consists of a diction element. Huck Finn Overview


Mark Twain = pen name..Samuel Clements = real name He had a problem with racism in the south & his works reflect the hypocrisy and prejudice he was so strongly opposed to. The book = controversial then and now, but for different reasons. Then, because of the overall vulgarity, apolitically correctness, impoliteness. Now, the reasons surround the language in the book (nigger). Setting=Mississippi River, Pre-civil war. Narration 1rst person = Huck Finn, so while hes an endearing & sympathetic character hes very unreliable, so question what hes saying cux hes biased, jaded and racism cuz hes a product of the south, a result of his environment. Dialects: Twain worked hard in getting them right to make things as real/accurate as possible. American Realism combats Romanticism. The Civil War was an imp factor cuz it was long/gruesome and people realized things werent ok. Photography also took on an important role cuz no longer could people veil themselves from the brutality. NO longer could they be disillusioned while seeing the overflowing medical clinics of the dead and dying soldiers.

Satire highlights the issues of race/class

They way people acted was open to ridicule in the book and this is done intentionally, to be funny and invoke a desire to reform but people didnt get that and were offended.
