The Gala Apple

There are different types of apples, but the one I chose was the Gala apple. The gala apple is one of the most popular apples in the United States and they are mostly always found in grocery stores, food markets, or at your school lunches. As far as the pricing goes for these types of apples it can vary from 1-3 pounds for 99 cents.

Why are they so popular?

The reason why apples are known to be one of the healthiest fruits and not just for their delicious taste, they are also full of healthy antioxidants, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. They are mainly a good source for CHO, Fiber, and Vitamin C and are typically below 90 calories.

The U.S. Apple Association

A growers association. Its purpose is to provide to all segments of the U.S. apple industry the means to profitably produce and market apples and apple products. A nonprofit membership association supported by individuals and corporate members as well as state/regional associations of apple producers. The members of this association are individuals or firms handling apples. The people handling apples can be from growers, packer/shippers, marketers, and processors.

History
The gala apple originated in New Zealand and the gala apple strain
was named in honor of Queen Elizabeth II, who said it was her favorite during a visit to New Zealand. This apple was brought to the United States in the early 1970s and is grown widely in the United States and has now become one of the countrys most popular apples. Was ranked #2 in 2006 by the U.S. apple association for most popular apples. #1 was the Red Delicious apple.

Farm Harvest

Apple trees require seeds for growth and need the full sun as well. They should be planted in the late Spring and should be positioned in full sunlight. They are mostly exclusively in the northern hemisphere where there are warm climates. Apple trees need well-drained soil, not too wet. The tree should also be well watered for proper fruit production. Apples keep well for about six months at temperatures between 32 and 45 degrees F. Soil needs to be moderately rich and retain moisture as well as air. U.S. galas are harvested beginning in mid-July and are typically available year round.

Life Lesson

I learned throughout this course is to always eat WHOLE foods and WHOLE grains. The importance of your food intakes such as eating fruits, vegetables, fiber, and water. The importance of carbohydrates on how they are really essential to health, but to avoid the bad ones such as refined and processed foods, sugar, and junk food. Have a diet that has low added sugar so that means to cut out sugary snacks and beverages.
