SINK OR FLOAT

STRATEGY : EXPENDING 5E TO 7E INSTRUCTIONAL MODEL The 5E learning cycle model requires instruction to include the following discrete elements: engage, explore, explain, elaborate, and evaluate. The proposed 7E model expands the engage element into two componentselicit and engage. Similarly, the 7E model expands the two stages of elaborate and evaluate into three componentselaborate, evaluate, and extend

EXPLAINATION

MISCONCEPTION
Light objects float while heavy objects sink.
Explanation: This statement is incorrect. This is because the phenomenon arises sink or not depends on the weight of heavy objects. Objects arise when the buoyancy force is higher than the weight of water displaced while on the other hand the object will sink

THE SINK OR FLOAT LESSON

Science Year 4 KSSR

Learning Standard :

Learning Standard :
1. Generalize properties of materials in terms of abilities either sink or float on the water surface with an activity. 2. Creating objects using the knowledge of material properties. (Sink or float) 3. Interpreting the selection of the material used in designing the object (sink or float)

Objektif :

Objective :
At the end of this lesson pupils will ; 1. Classify three material properties through its ability to float. 2. Creates an object that was originally submerged, float on the surface of the water 3. Make a brief statement not all heavy objects will sink if knowing the factors that can make it float.

1. ELICIT
Using KWL chart (know, what and learn) The prior knowledge about float and sink in year 3. Activities: 1. Students do simple activity using an aquarium with half of water. 2. Students put in three different materials and make an observation (materials : plastic, wood and plastesine)

2. ENGAGE
Students ask open-ended questions Student use KWL to identify misconception from their prior knowledge Activities: 1.Students make a conclusion the heavy things will sink into the water. 2.Students make a hypothesis from their first activity.

3. EXPLORE
Teacher challenge pupils to make sink materials they show in the activity can float on water. Pupils plan and carry out an investigation. Activities : 1. Pupils try to solve the challenge from teacher. 2. Pupils make a discussion in group to plan the activities. 3. Pupils test the model by them self.

Pupils success to float the object

4. EXPLAIN
Pupils construct explanations and design a solution. Engage in arguments from the evidence Pupils obtain, evaluate and communicate information Activities : 1. Pupils use the KWL form to discuss the factor that they can obtain from the activities. 2. Pupils present to compare the factors they find out to others groups.

5. ELABORATE
Pupils make a brief statement not all heavy objects will sink if knowing the factors that can make it float Activities : 1. Pupils write the factors influence the heavy materials can float on water.

6. EVALUATE
Pupils challenged by teacher to built submarine by consider the factor the found Activities : 1. Pupils make a sketch design of using a concept they obtain. 2. Pupils explain suitable materials use to built

7. EXTEND
Activities : 1.Pupils built the submarine they design and test on water 2.Pupils explain how the submarine can sink and float in water.
