DC-HSDPA

DC-HSDPA is introduced in 3GPP Release 8 DC-HSDPA allows a UE to set up HSDPA connections with two inter-frequency time-synchronous cells that have the same coverage

Page4

DC-HSDPA

Advantages:

DC-HSDPA improves the end users throughput in the whole cell area even in the cell edges

No negative impacts on the legacy HSDPA users and terminals. If transceiver elements (RRU) support multi carrier technology then no additional hardware will be required for network upgrade to DC-HSDPA

The evolution from the HSPA to DC-HSPA is easy and

economical compared to MIMO upgrade

DC-HSDPA Basic Concepts

Primary cell( also called anchor cell )

a carrier that carries all the channels of a UE, including UL dedicated channels

Secondary cell ( also called supplementary cell )

a carrier that carries only three types of DL channel of a UE

Cell Structure and Working Principle

One of the two cells is treated as Anchor (primary) Cell and

the other one as Supplementary (secondary) cell and both

of them can be deployed with Equivalent and Nonequivalent channel configuration.

Page7

Cell Structure and Working Principle

Equivalent Mode
1. Both the cells can work as anchor and supplementary cells for DC users. Advantage 2. Both the cells will work as an independent single cell source for the non-DCHSDPA subscribers or legacy HSDPA subscribers

Non Equivalent Mode

The supplementary cell's power will be saved and contribute to the cell throughput.

1. The anchor cell cannot be changed. 2. If the supplementary cell is configured with one HS-DSCH and a P-CPICH The supplementary cell will (3GPP did not give the actual cost more DL power since requirements about the common some of the common channels' configuration of channels are not be switch off. supplementary cell), the supplementary cell cannot serve traditional HSDPA, HSUPA and R99 users.

Cell Structure and Restriction

The Timing of the two cells remains the same ( defined by parameter Tcell ) The ACK/NACK/CQI for 2 Carriers will be Joint-encoded and reported by HSDPCCH in Anchor Cell DC-HSDPA+MIMO is not implemented within 3GPP R8 standards, but the sector can support DC and MIMO simultaneously The two cells must belong to the same Node-B and are on adjacent carriers in the same frequency band The UE will only communicate with one cell (Anchor Carrier) in the uplink

Parameter DCHSDPASwitch Description DC-HSDPA will be supported with this parameter switch on

ULLdbDRDSwitchDcHSDPA

UL Load Balance procedure can be triggered with this parameter switch on

ULLdbDRDLoadRemainThdDcH SDPA

During the DC-HSDPA UE try to access the network by cell A, if the remained UL load of cell A is smaller than this parameter, network will trigger UL Load Balance procedure to select suitable cell as the Anchor Carrier

ULLdbDRDOffsetDcHSDPA

During the UL Load Balance Procedure, if the UL Load difference between the current cell and a DRD cell is larger than this parameter, the cell can be the target cell

Summary of DC Gain

In Muti-User Burst Services (HTTP, WAP and etc.)

scenarios, the DC-HSDPA can maximize the utilization of

Uu resources and make significant improvement for QoS

Especially, the double instantaneous bit rate (comparing

with SC-HSDPA) , not related with the UE location

(comparing with MIMO) , can be achieved on NonCongestion Status
